Product Description
In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

Customers are mixed about the scratch resistance of the building material. For example some mention it looks almost brand new, removes scratches and lightening of the wood from water over the years, and is an easy way to repair scratches on antique wood furniture or wooden kitchen. However, some customers report problems with the most severe finish defects and the Nitrocellulose laquer finish has broken down in spots.

"...The fumes are very strong but didn’t seem to linger for very long." Read more
Customers are mixed about the color of the wood finish. Some say it colors the area perfectly, warms up, and deepens the fading color of old pieces. However, others say that it adds no color at all and makes the area very dark.
"...The only thing I don’t really like is how dark the spots get that the varnish is missing pretty deep. But it still looks a lot better than it did...." Read more
"...Glad we did because the result is noticeably darker...." Read more
"...The Restor-a-Finish did help cover these areas but it also darken the finish and enhanced the grain of the oak to the point that the door didn't..." Read more

I used it on my 20+ year bedroom set (bedframe, 2 nightstands, 2 oversized dressers, desk and chair). The whole set looks great. The set only had minor problems but for 2 areas. This is where don't expect miracles comes in. I did not expect this to work on my issues and it did not. One night stand has water damage and the desk has an area where the finish has worn down to bare wood (from arms resting on it while doing computer work.) I will need to sand and refinish these the traditional way. Also if you have a deep scratch/ding, it will not fill it in. It will only add color to it so it is not a noticeable.
Hope this helps. This is something to use before problems get out of hand.
Although our woodwork is a medium maple color we chose Golden Oak to be safer with a lighter shade. Glad we did because the result is noticeably darker. The maple color stayed about the same, which is what we wanted, but the Golden Oak product didn't hide every nick. Still, a great result.
The product contains a mixture of light stain, light oil, and a solvent that smells to me like lacquer thinner. It works by slightly dissolving the original finish, adding some stain for color nicks and scratches, then blending the resultant mix back into the wood. It dries very quickly.
At least three things can go wrong (a) the wood has an existing finish that can't be dissolved, (b) the wrong color of product was used, and (c) not using steel wool where needed. We got lucky and chose the right color. But we neglected to use the steel wool on one fairly damaged flat shelf which only came out "good".
The company has a video on YouTube explaining how to use the product and the use of steel wool.
I suspect that some of the people dissatisfied with their results had one of the three issues above, which is neither their fault nor the product.

It worked… alright. This is a fairly potent solvent with a stain and also some sort of oil and/or wax. The idea is that it partially dissolves the finish, stains any scratches to blend them in with the overall colour, and blends different areas so the piece looks more even. You can then add an oil or wax finish over top if you wish.
There are two main issues with it. First, colour matching is tricky but vital, because any scratches will become the colour of the stain. This meant that sure, it did a good job of blending/camouflaging some whitish scratches/scuffs in the finish, but other scratches almost became more visible than before because “golden oak” was really quite a dark brown it turns out, so now they are darker than the surrounding wood.
Second, it’s important to be aware that this will thin/remove some previous finish - that’s how it works. And unfortunately, a lot of furniture that is now old/sought after/“antique” wasn’t necessarily made to super high carpentry standards. So if panels have been pinned, and then the little holes filled, or if end grain has been filled rather than carefully sanded, when the solvent dissolves the toned lacquer used originally to cover these blemishes they will become more apparent because the filler will not take the stain like wood will.
I learnt this the hard way when the wardrobe handles, which were previously a fairly even reddish wood tone, are now blotchy and more worn looking because it has taken the old lacquer back to reveal areas where the cheaply carved wood was filled. Because this leaves an oily/waxy finish, the only real option if I wanted to change this would be to mask them off or remove them and use another solvent to de-wax, sand, then paint with e.g. a tinted poly varnish.
Finally, they tell you to use 0000 steel wool for more damaged areas. You have to be really careful here - what you’re doing (as you might expect) is removing a lot more of the original finish in this area. Again, the colour matching issue comes into play, and when I tried this it left a pale spot, thankfully somewhere inconspicuous.
Overall although this may have given some panels of the wardrobe in question a refresh, I’m not happy with the damage it has done to the handles or the increased visibility of certain scratches, and I wish I had just tried some wax oil on its own first to see whether that would have reduced visible scratches in the finish without the problems.
