All that said, i like this rack a lot so far. It fit perfectly fine on my hybrid bike. I have a step-through frame, so the top of the rear tyre is actually several cm higher than the bosses on the seat stays, so i did have to bend the little rods on the front of the rack down quite a bit to get them to reach. But it's fine, it just requires a little effort; if i can do it, anyone can.
This might be self-explanatory, but just in case it's not, i do have one tip regarding those rods: If you do have to bend them, bend them only as much as you need to to get the holes on the rods to line up with the holes on the seat stays. Don't try to get it perfect, just keep it in place with one hand and use the other one to screw it on. The tightening of the screws will easily bend the rods the rest of the way.
Other than that, installation is pretty straight-forward. The instructions were kind of confusing to me at first because they're in a dozen languages, but actually there are only four or five steps. Partially screw the rods onto the rack, then screw the rack to the drop-outs, then bend the rods and/or screw them to the seat stays. You can then optionally install a rear light mount on the back of the rack. All the screws are standard hex bolts (i think #5 but i'm not positive), except for the one that attaches the light mount (it's a Phillips).
As far as quality and usability, i've only recently got 'serious' about bikes, so i don't have experience with any other racks. But from my experience just with this one, i'd say it's pretty good. I use a Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EX with my rack, and i have no complaints. There is a 'foot' on the bottom of the bag that slides into the rails on the bike rack, which holds the bag down and prevents it from moving side to side. Then there is a clip on the front of the bag that clamps down on the bar at the front end of the rack, which keeps it from sliding off the back. It seems very secure and there is almost zero movement.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a rear rack. My only disclaimer is, again, what i said at the beginning -- i'm not a hardcore cyclist and i don't know much about the things that they'd be likely to worry about, like weight and carrying capacity. But for the average person at least i think it's great.
I replaced the panniers with a Topeak MTX Trunk Bag . I use my bike mostly for commuting and this bag worked very well. It is expandable, rugged and works well with Topeak's excellent line of clip-on lights, including the Topeak Mega Red lite (3x1.5x1.5-Inch) . I use this bag on long weekend rides as well - its insulated main compartment can keep water and snacks cold for hours. The only problem is that I sometimes needed more room for things like a laptop, extra shoes and clothing, etc.
Because I sometimes need more room I recently upgraded to a Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP Bicycle Trunk Bag with Rigid Molded Panels . This bag provides all the room I could need for commuting and weekend trips. It too allows for a clip on Topeak light.
Both of these bags use the Topeak rail system and lock on the Explorer Bike Rack to attach securely to your bike. I have heard anecdotal stories of people losing bags but in most cases they will admit to not using the lock properly. Not that it's hard - it's a spring-loaded lock that is easily disengaged when you want it to disengage, but which will stand up to any conceivable pothole - trust me, I ride in New York City and its suburbs and, at certain times of the year, our potholes are just short of being officially classified as sink holes.
Overall this is the best rack/bag system out there and it is therefore not the cheapest, though it is not overly priced given its quality. I highly recommend the Topeak rail system for anyone who wants a reliable, sturdy rack with a long list of compatible bags and accessories.
Important notes:
1 - There is no such thing as a universal rack but this comes as close as you are going to get. That's why buying from Amazon is a good deal - their return policy cannot be beat.
2 - If you have disc brakes, you should purchase Topeak Explorer Bicycle Rack with Disc Brake Mounts
1. What's in the box? : You receive the rack assembled, plus two brackets and the necessary screws, washers and bolts.
2. Installation?: This was a fairly easy install. The information says it must be installed on a bike with the necessary points on the frame and that is technically true, except that most bikes don't have these and you can STILL use this rack. I did have the holes on the read part of the frame and the screws worked correctly. However, without the bracketed stays, the rack isn't going to easily stay in place.
I needed up seeing other reviews here and someone mentioned a rubber coated "p-clamp". I found one (and these are under 2 dollars at Home Depot or Lowes) and used this on the seat-post. Doing this made installing the brackets really easy to work.
Use?: Once the rack was securely in place, I have tried this out and the rack works well. The large rear basket fits perfectly and securely (and there is no rattling around either).
Overall?: This is a nicely done rack, with some modification being needed if your bike doesn't have the holes for the brackets, an extra part may be needed (why the manufacturer doesn't include such a part already is beyond me) but don't despair, this will work and work well.
