Three months later in late evening I realized I was getting another cold sore. This is very disappointing because normally I average less than one a year. I was able to start applying the ointment before the tingling stage had even started. The next morning I woke up to a painful blister, though thankfully, just one small one. I applied the ointment several times through the day. By mid-afternoon, approximately eighteen hours after I first applied the ointment, the blister dropped off. Most of the skin underneath it had healed. There was a small spot still healing but I no longer had a visible cold sore. The next morning, which is today, there is still a spot that hasn't healed but it is so small there obviously isn't going to be a scab.
No product is going to work for everyone. I would never say Abreva does not work but I can say it does not work for me. I recommend this product to anyone suffering from cold sores. It is relatively inexpensive. If it works for you as well as it works for me you will be thrilled and then some. If it doesn't work for you at least you will not be out much money and will still have something you can use for dry, chapped lips. As far as shelf life goes: the pot I received in November 2015 expires in June 2017.
This balm works amazingly! It keeps lips hydrated and wards off blisters, if applied as soon as the first tingle is felt. I am someone who cannot use chapstick/lip balm of any kind, and trust me when I say I’ve tried every kind with every ingredient and made in every way, without my lips blistering as a result. This is and has been the only balm I CAN put on my lips to help with chapping and keeping blisters at bay.
This stuff is amazing!
After many excruciating months of antibiotic therapy to treat Lyme disease that had been misdiagnosed, my immune system was susceptible to almost everything. As a child, I had a horrible case of chicken pox and as the result of that now as an adult : I had broken out in the most painful and atrocious Shingles my doctor had ever seen on a patient in her 30s. Chicken pox, Shingles, and cold sores all have a common denominator and that is that all of these maladies are a strain of Herpes. For those who carry some embarrassment about this insidious virus, don't be embarrassed. Although it will always lie dormant in our bodies until activated to erupt for whatever reasons, a VAST percentage of our population is harboring the virus-both the young and the elderly...immunocompromised or just plain stressed out.
I mentioned the Shingles only because I truly wish I had had this jar of balm to use on what was truly the most horrific skin affliction I've ever suffered.
I recently came down with the flu and was so sick I had to be in the hospital briefly. It was then that I noticed the corner of my mouth was "cracking" and quite dry. I came home and was complaining to myself that the price of Abreva was absolutely ridiculous and so I went here to Amazon to see if there was another option for topical use. Another friend of a family member had used Abreva but honestly when I saw their next day results I had remembered their disappointment and for good reasons: inflated pricing and pretty commercial ads aside, Abreva wasn't as awesome as hoped for.
I found this balm here on Amazon but because I am a skeptic I ALSO bought the least expensive oral supplement of L-Lysine (the amino acid which helps to shorten the duration of the eruption(s)).
I have a Prime account but the shipping was even faster than usual which is ideal when treating the symptoms of the virus.
My mouth and lips are always excruciatingly dry from an autoimmune condition leaving me perhaps more vulnerable and even so, cold sores near my mouth are so uncommon that I didn't have anything on hand excepting lip balm sans the Lysine. I would recommend always having at least the Lysine balm on hand as it works literally overnight.
Once I opened my packages, the first thing I did was to use the Lysine lip balm. Although the corner of my mouth was merely just cracking, I didn't want to suffer anything further.
In the morning after, I was pleased. The cracking was still there but it was already abating. It didn't tingle, it didn't blister, it simply got much better. The second day of using it the cracking was almost gone completely.
I gave this product 4 stars only because it contains petroleum jelly. On the jar the labeling sort of implies it is all natural by printing "Basic Organics".
Labeling is important to me. However, I do hope the price of this product stays low but I would be willing to pay a few dollars more for an all natural product--perhaps even a truly organic one!
Highly recommend!
I get the occasional outbreak on the perimeter of my mouth, triggered from sun exposure or extreme stress. In the past I've treated these nuisances with internal lysine and Herpecin HL balm, alongside my homemade lemon balm salve. This combo has been great for clearing things up within a week, but I wanted to find something more preventive. I decided to give this salve a try since it was so cheap, after spending a lot of time in the garden and triggering more outbreaks from the sunshine. This salve got rid of the sore I had and I have not had another one crop up since I started using it! I've now replaced my treatment regiment with simply using this little pot of balm several times a week. I put it on before bed and I also try to apply it before spending hours in the sun, and I have not had an issue. I even stopped making my homemade salve -- why deal with the mess when this L-Lysine ointment is so effective at preventing the problem?! The pot itself is quite big and you get a lot of ointment for the price. I also like the thicker texture--it actually stays on where you apply it and not very much is needed to be effective.
