I bought a bundle of firewood and used this maul to hack into skinnier pieces (do it bundled up; way easier). This maul works well for me, a not strong senior female; easier than using an axe. However I can’t hold a piece and swing this maul using the other hand. This thing needs velocity to work. My arm is too weak to lift it high and swing it down fast one handed. I probably need a hatchet to cut skinny wood into kindling size (the pile next to this maul is the wood chips from hacking firewood bundle).

I keep this thing in the back of my pickup for when trees inevitably fall on the road in my little rural town. It’s heavy and easy to use, making it great to clear the way

Looks to be well made but it's not light that's why I did not review that part of it and I haven't had it long enough to check it's durability has a razor sharp edge too so be careful, comes with a decent covering for the Axe end of it. Is all synthetic material too no wood to fall apart. I'd recommend this tool. it's nicely finished as well.

Great for speeding up kindling splitting with the Kracker, but also allows me to split fat, too-heavy pieces of firewood that got past me out in the woodyard without being split at least once more. Also lets me use the cutting edge like a wedge, but with a handle, so I can drive it safely with my drilling hammer. Nice not to have to walk out to the shed (75 yds) to get my full-size maul and bring it up to the house for a 5-minute job.

Just what we were looking for to do some wood chopping. Not as heavy to handle as a full-size maul, so lighter and better for some of the weaker members of the family to be able to contribute!

Used it at camp the other day.
It’s good for splitting some small logs, and one can also use it to chop some smaller diameter branches.

Finally also used it to pound down tent stakes which it does with ease.

Pretty versatile camp tool, and solidly built. Also like the blade cover.
The head is heavy, so take breaks from swinging it around; let its weight do the work!

I purchased the standard blue Fireside Friend model and glad I did for the additional grip and comfort of the shock-reduction hanlde over the leather ring alternative. The 4 lb. weight is perfect for camping and can be used with one or two hands. While it would be nice if the handle was about two inches longer, this tool works fine as is and fits nicely in my camping tool bag with my Husqvarna hatchet.

My only nit and why I deducted one star was the poor edge on this tool as sold. The quality of the materials and fit was very good, but the sharpness of the bit was disappointing, event for a splitting maul. I noticed this when I was getting bounce-back or rebound when splitting greener wood. On closer examination I discovered that not only the cutting edge was dull, but it was poorly ground with one side not matching the angle of the other. After about an hour of finishing with a file and sharpening stone, I finally achieved the sharpness I expected and it performed much better.

If you have dry, seasoned wood, I would expect about 4-6 inches to be about the maximum diameter for this tool to split safely. I split about a dozen 4 inch logs cut from trees downed this spring by storms which was still somewhat green, so this was a fairly critical test. After dressing the blade bit, however, it did an excellent job of splitting this wood.

While I usually use a large log as a base for splitting with a standard long-handled maul, I found it safer to split logs and their sections directly on the ground with the Fireside Friend Axe. This avoids any bounce-back of this shorter-handled maul into one of your legs while standing, which nearly happened to me. I found this tool safest and most effective to use kneeling in front of the piece you’re splitting, leaving little to no chance that rebound of the shorter maul could present a danger.

In closing, I’m excited to find this compact, yet effective splitting maul for my camping excursions. Yes, I was disappointed that the cutting edge was not properly finished, but having resolved that myself, I look forward to using this Estwing Fireside Friend for years to come.

This is exactly what I was looking for. It is the perfect size to use in our wood room for splitting kindling and using with the Kindling Cracker XL King Firewood Splitter, that we also purchased from Amazon.

High quality, I am happy. Made in USA! Right out of the box I split several medium sized logs. It has a good edge. I used a 3 lb hammer to drive in this 4lb wedge/hatchet. I will also use the hammer side of this 4lb tool to finish off hits with a 6lb splitting maul.

I split about 2 cord worth of birch to give it a test and within a day I had it all split- this little thing packs a great punch and its really fun and super efficient to use. I can split with a single hand AND two hand for a stronger swing- it's great! Highly recommend- especially for the price. For those who don't need a massive splitting sledge this is definitely the next best thing.

Although the handle is a little on the short side, this tool is amazing! One solid swing will split almost all firewood lengths, and the reverse side is a handy sledge for driving tent pegs into hard ground. Easy to sharpen and no concerns about durability. The handle is a bit tight to swing two-handed.

Originally I wanted to get the 4lb long handle hammer for rocks but I just couldn't justify the price. So I got the short handle 4lb and this to compare - this one is awesome! I took the other one back. This has a long handle with extended grip, it's weighted well, and when you need a strong hatchet - there it is! A total win-win for rockhounds and campers!
