Very good compact subwoofer
I bought this sub to give my movies a bit more kick in the low end. I have made do without a sub for quite a while, and visits to a friends’s house that has a full 5.1 system leave me jealous every time. The problem is that I live in a small condo, and I needed a sub that was relative powerful yet compact. When I saw this one for sale on Amazon, I decided to take a chance. And I am glad I did.It was easy to set up, it came with a cable which I was able to use to connect to my receiver and get it up and running in no time.It has a light on the front toward the bottom. When the sub is in standby mode it glows red but as soon as it detects the receiver has powered on, the sub get out of standby mode and the light turns green.Another reason why I like this sub: it is front firing. I am not and audiophile in any way. But in my condo where I have people living above and below me, I need a sub that fires toward the front so I don’t bother my neighbors. I don’t know if this is a consequence of being front-firing or not, but it seems to provide a good amount of low end punch with very little effort. It makes movies and music really come to life.I am not a music lover per se, and I don’t usually listen to bass-heavy music very much. So I cannot comment on how powerful it is or is not. For my needs, and for my money, it is a great sub for movies and music. That was ultimately what I wanted it to do, and for me, it succeeded.

I bought this sub after I realized the the pair of Sony SBS3000 I bought do not produce the lows that I was looking for. I use it mainly for listening to music and occasional movies. For the money, I don't think it gets any better. Produces great clean sound, I have had no issues with clipping at very high volumes and it gives just enough punch to add the necessary depth to the music I listen too. Some people complain about its auto on/off feature. I can see why some see that as a problem; At very low volumes it wont turn on. Personally its not an issue for me because if volume is low its low for a reason, I do not need the sub to produce extra volume. However, with proper receiver setup in conjunction with its volume knob you can have it turn on very predictably at certain volume levels. I wouldnt make this a make or break decision for anything, this is a great sub for the money.

For the price, this subwoofer delivers what is needed for a home theater. The bass is extremely tight and it definitely has the range needed for movies - you will become aware of low sounds in movies and shows that you did not know were there. Compared to other subwoofers around it's price-point (yes I have tried others) it has a more well rounded sound and does not offer just the "boom boom" flat noise as some of the others do, even though they claim to be in the same "frequencies". The Onkyo just handles the bass better and I don't feel overwhlemed with flat bass that does not deliver the depth I need in my theater. It is extremely loud, so you must make sure you adjust accordingly. Use the crossover cut off to adjust to your preferred liking and keep the volume either at half or below, I have it at about a quarter. Remember you don't necessarily need the high bass, so keeping the crossover lower is usually better in most cases. As always with subs, less is more.

Now on to the issue with this subwoofer, and the reason I am writing this review. The auto shut off or "standby" feature is the main killer of this product and why I will knock off 1 star and not give this a full 5 star review. It is true what is written in the comments here, it has about 10 minutes before it will go into "standby" if it is not picking up any low level sounds, such as when watching a show or a movie with a long dialogue scene, the light will turn red and it will not "wake" back up until a sufficient amount of bass is passed through. This results in a popping noise as the speaker turns back on, and there is a small one or two second delay as this happens so the explosion in your movie that just gave it what it needed to kick back on, only sounds like the last half of the explosion. The other brands have a switch that allows you to either enable or disable the auto standby, effectively making this a non issue for them, but not the Onkyo. They assumed that everyone would want this to happen all the time, and some people do. Many people in these comments are happy and have no complaints, others truly enjoy the fact that it will automatically turn itself off when there is no deep bass coming through, and I am sure it saves power in the long run. However, this was really bothering me and I could not let this ruin my home theater experience, especially since I honestly thought the sound from this sub was unmatched in the price range - and it is, I promise. Luckily, the internet is an amazing tool, the reviews and comments section on Amazon is easily searchable and the community is extremely insightful and willing to share. I happened upon a post explaining a method to disable this feature. Yes, that's right....

THERE IS A WAY TO DISABLE AUTO SHUT OFF / STANDBY!!!

I cannot take complete credit for this, as someone else in a previous post mentioned it and I am forever grateful to that person for taking the time to write their comment, so I hope this will help someone else as well. To accomplish this you will need a 2.54mm Standard Computer Jumper Cap. These used to be used on motherboards and hard drives - I had a few extra in a PC toolkit I purchased a while back. You can get a few from Radio shack or from Amazon for a couple of bucks. Then, get on google and find the service manual for this sub, it's as easy as searching for "onkyo skw204 service manual", you should find an 11 page PDF. Go to page 9, there is a section there that says, "Short test point P631 for amplifier is under active mode". Underneath that whole list of steps is a picture that shows you where point P631 is on the mainboard. Now, this probably will void the warranty and I am sure this is not recommended by Onkyo for us to do ourselves, additionally there is a risk of electric shock when dealing with electrical components so this is my disclaimer that you will be trying this at your own risk. On the back of the sub, after disconnecting all the speaker cables and **power**, remove all the screws on the perimeter of the main plate that has all the connections and controls. Pull it out gently and you will see the main board. It looks like the picture in the service manual on page 9. Find the P631 point and place the jumper on the two pins. There is no need to connect the power while doing this or turn on the sub and use the multimeter to fine-tune the idle shut-off, but if you are so inclined, go right ahead setup your mV to what it suggests. As for me, I just wanted the sub to always be on unless I turned it off from the main power switch on the back, so it is sufficient to just leave the jumper on P631. This shorts that motherboard point and bypasses the whole auto shut off standby headache. Once you're done, just close it back up, plug it back in, and enjoy your amazing subwoofer. The light will always stay green and the speaker will only turn off if you manually switch the power on the back.

This may be a deal breaker for some, as there is some work involved in turning off this feature and it is not as simple as some other brand's switch, but the quality of the subwoofer was worth it for me to take control and attempt this solution, and I am extremely happy with the results. I have to say it once more, this may void your warranty (not sure), and it is potentially dangerous if done incorrectly, but anyone with slight computer knowledge should be able to complete this task.

A huge thank you to the person who figured this out before me; you're the reason why people and the internet are so awesome!

Everyone else, good luck and I hope this review helps someone out there.

I purchased this subwoofer a week ago, and all I say is wow! The thing is built like a tank. I have it hooked to my Onkyo receiver along with Allison Al-120's fronts, and Paradigm surrounds. I never had a subwoofer hooked to my system because the Allison's are awesome speakers. I decided to give this a try because the price was fantastic, and I know that Onkyo puts out great receivers. Well, now I can add subwoofers to the list. This thing some beautiful lows. It may cause some problems with my fellow condo owners because of wall and window shaking, but thems the breaks. I have not had any problems with humming, rattles, or sensitivity to near by wires. I think if you can put this bad boy in a corner of your listening space it may be the best spot for it. Listening to music, and watching movies are alot more fun these days. You'll never find a better buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente opción, sí se configura adecuadamente...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the sub you're looking for.
Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2019
My old sub which came as a package with satellite speakers couldn't handle the demand. It was either too low, or the speaker was reaching maximum excursion and distorted, especially on the LFE sounds present in movies.

One weekend with the Onkyo SKW-204 subwoofer, and I'm in love. Rich bass, hits hard, and low distortion. It was an incredibly good bargain for a subwoofer of this quality. My only regret is not buying two :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Subwoofer poderoso, pero a la vez, bien definido.
Reviewed in Mexico on September 18, 2020

Got this sub on sale and it was a fantastic purchase. Even at the regular price it is a good deal but at half off makes it even better. Pairs up beautifully with my Onkoyo receiver. It pounds out the bass when required and is not overpowering when the bass lines soften. Great rich sounds for music and wonderful for movies also.
