The images of this device are not accurate - the saw is not so light that you can carry it with such ease - it is relatively heavy (45 lbs) and will require both hands for lifting. However, it is certainly portable as compared to a table saw and is great for "tossing" on your pickup truck for site visits. It has a very sturdy metal roll cage which gives the saw the feeling of weight and quality that other products do not have.
Unboxing the saw, you find the base, the plastic blade covers and mechanism, fence rails, and the locking mechanism for the rails. You will have to assemble these yourself, but that is not complicated with the detailed instructions. My only challenge was getting the black piece which covers the blade to attach, but after a few tries, I was successful. The clear plastic blade cover feels flimsy and cheap, but will do the job well enough. It is nice that it's clear so you can see what you are doing, and precisely where you are cutting the wood, with relative ease.
The rails slide out if you have a thicker piece of lumber. They attach in place so the wood does not slide around. If you have a long 12 foot piece of wood, it will be difficult to cut this perfectly, as there is no locking mechanism for both sides of the wood. Your long piece of wood will slide around while being chopped, and will not yield a precise cut along the line you make. The 16" rip capacity is fantastic for most pieces of wood - I had a little difficulty with a beam but otherwise all was fine. The 3800 torque is powerful enough to slice through most cuts and the saw did not slow down at all on my job.
The saw has a wheel which will adjust the angle of your blade if you need to make a diagonal cut. The blade will not go more than 45 degrees through 90 degrees, but for most people that is sufficient. It has a locking on or off mechanism that is easy to turn off as soon as you are finished. There's also height mechanism that can adjust if you are on unsteady surface - it does not go out that far but just enough to make a difference on a small height variance. There is also a dust collection port, but be aware that sawdust will still collect throughout the saw wheel housing and will need cleaning every so often. I usually just turn the entire thing upside down and carefully shake it all out - that prevents buildup. The company has thought of everything - there is also a catch for the plug which holds it in place while you are transporting it.
The rail has a measuring tape/miter gauge attached to it which was great for custom measurements. My only complaint with this was that I could not simply and easily measure a piece of wood and use the rails to cut the wood. For instance, if I wanted a 4" piece of wood out of 6" piece, it was not a simple matter to just measure 4 inches using the measuring tape attached and chop from there. I had to use my handheld tape to do this measurement. The top portion of the saw is some sort of plastic or metal with a grey coating that scratched easily once I slid a few pieces of wood down it. This is not going to maintain its pristine condition for long.
This is perfect for most wood cuts, but is not the best for cutting crown molding. You are better off with a table saw. In sum, this saw was a fantastic addition to my toolshed. Easy to transport, and makes all the cuts I need. 5 stars.
This is a great compact saw. I really like the rack and pinion fence! It came perfectly aligned too. It is very light and easy to carry outside. The motor has plenty of power (and I do not feel the need for a soft start). It cuts very well - never bogged down a bit.
I have a DW723 stand, and I sometimes installing the saw on it sideways with a modified (for height) DEWALT DW7027 Wide Roller Material Support - I have cut some long doors and the setup worked great. I am thinking of building my own extension that could be attached to the saw's tubular frame...
Things I don't like or can be improved: I would have liked to be able to store it sideways, or to store the fence somewhere inside the saw (as the Bosch GTS1031). I wish I was also able to lock the blade's position. The motor shaft could have been a little longer to allow use of Dado blades. The miter gauge is junk (how much would have cost them to include a better one?!?). The stock blade is low quality. And finally: why the heck didn't Dewalt designed some extensions for the fence? There is a review here mentioning that the owner modified the rails to be able to use it up to twenty some odd inches, but why should I do this and not have some extensions that could be installed on the rails and thus do my once in the blue moon 24" cut?
Oh, I am using Diablo blades, which are thin kerf (0.098") so barely over the 0.094" minimum that could work with the riving knife (I initially purchased the Freud LU83R010 10-Inch 50 Tooth ATB Thin Kerf Combination Saw Blade with 5/8-Inch Arbor and PermaShield Coating , but it returned it cause it woudn't have worked with this knife as it was 0.091" kerf thickness). Well then, let me tell you, adjusting the riving knife proved to be a pain in the rear end... You need to remove the dust collection cover to have better access to the adjustment screws (page 10 in the manual). Then use a 5/32" allen head for the 2 large screws, and a 5/64" allen head for the 3 smaller screws. It will take a few good trials before you'd think it's OK. I thought I finally had everything perfectly aligned, and then I had to readjust after the first cut. It's not the easiest way to adjust that friggin' knife... I am thankful now that I have a collection of similar Diablo blades from my miter saw, so I never have to readjust this knife.
BTW, the manual on Dewalt's website is not what I received with my saw (different riving knife and blade guard, so different riving knife adjustment). The Home Depot website has the correct one. Go figure..
