Product Description
The Laguna PowerHeat De-Icer is for ponds whose temperatures are down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The PowerHeat De-Icer is not meant to heat your pond, but only to aid in gas exchange.
Important information
Directions
The Laguna PowerHeat De-Icer provides a critical environmental control tool for ponds where a pet and property owner needs to keep the water from icing over, potentially killing off the fish inside. This product works particularly well for ponds and small bodies of water that are reaching temperatures of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The Laguna De-Icer utilizes a 15-watt heating element to break down snow as it makes contact. This feature stops the De-Icer from becoming buried in snow itself. In the meantime, the unit can keep function, performing a necessary gas exchange in the water so that fish aren't deprived of their oxygen. A simple, clear LED light provides a quick indication when the unit is operating as designed. Further, the safety features of the device automatically turns the Laguna De-Icer off if there is a problem. This prevents burn out and electrical problems. To recap, the benefits of the Laguna PowerHeat De-Icer helps with the following: The De-Icer continues gas exchange in the pond, helping the fish inside. The safety features on the De-Icer unit prevent it from over-heating or burning out due to a malfuction of some sort. The unit protects itself with a built in heating element that makes it impossible for snow to build on up on the unit. The features of the unit prevent icing over near the element as it sits in a pond.

May, 2019 Update:
Three years of super performance! I was amazed that my pond never froze in January 2018 when we had over two weeks of temperatures that never broke 32. Nights were typically down to below 0. Want to know a real kicker? I never disconnected my waterfall for the winter of 2017 and 2018! No ice dams. No frozen water whatsoever. And here is a bonus for everyone: leave your heater in your pond right through April. All that awful string algae that would normally grow when the temperatures begin to rise...gone! I had to investigate this more and learned that the heater helps get the temperature of the water high enough to allow the good bacteria to colonize quickly. That means that the algae has nothing to feed on. This spring my water has been crystal clear. I disconnected the heater in early May. I’m buying a second unit as a backup since this thing has been so useful. I’d give it ten stars if I could.

It does a good job of staying level.
It melts surrounding ice well.
I like the added hook for aeration hose to keep the bubbler and heater close to each other.
The only problem is it never turns off. Not sure where the temp sensor is on the heater but it seems like its not in the right spot as this heater will melt the entire pond surface. Granted my fish pond is smaller, but I would expect the power to cycle once a 4-6 inch area has been melted. Looks like I will need to add a timer to restrict it from running 24/7.
