Pigments & BinderThere is no water within the Artisan formulation; the linseed and safflower oils have been modified to allow the colour to accept water. This creates a stable emulsion, and retains the working characteristics of conventional oil colour. The pigments, together with the most suitable oil, bring out each colour’s individual characteristics, from opacity to natural transparency. |
Surface SheenEach pigment needs different levels of oil in the formulation, so the sheen may differ slightly from colour to colour. The addition of water as a solvent, as well as the use of mediums, will also alter the sheen. |
ConsistencyArtisan has the short buttery consistency expected from a Winsor & Newton oil colour, a consistency that is a careful balance between the pigment and the oils used in the formulation (modified linseed and safflower). This is the traditional consistency of oil colours, and as such allows the artist a broader variety of techniques, the colour can be thinned as required. |

My concerns with oil painting was the practicality and cleanup. So far, in three months of painting I have been incredibly happy with this brand. Now, I do not have a lot of other brands to compare it to. I can really only compare Windsor and newtons water mixable and traditional oil paints.
So far, the only difference I have discovered between the two involved cleanup and readily available colors.
Let's discuss cleanup first. With warm soap and water, my brushes come perfectly clean. My hands, face, table, and any other thing that I accidentally touch has all come by gently rubbing a non-alcohol baby wipe, soap and water, or even a damp rag. During my painting sessions, I use a two compartment brush clean up container. This has allowed me to thoroughly clean my brush during the session without contaminating other colors on my palate or canvas. This is a great line of paints for my needs or really anyone looking for alternative ways to clean up without using harsh solvents on your hands or other items in your painting area.
Finding colors and mixing. I do not have a lot of experience with mixing. So more experienced painters may have achieved better results than I have. First, as these are not as widely accepted as traditional oil paints, there are not as many colors readily available. I have also found it a little difficult to achieve the same colors with these as I have seen during tutorials or during my weekly class. My Bob Ross certified instructor with 40+ Years of painting and teaching experience has also had difficulty with mixing the colors to match those we are using in class. If you do not need an exact match, I believe this can be worked around. However, each artist must decide that part for themselves.
My overall impression, is a great one. I may experiment with other water-soluble paints just to know if there is a difference but not because I am disappointed with this brand. I have also learned that you can make traditional oil paints a part of your painting by using limited amounts which will make them water-soluble also. This will solve my limited color range vs. traditional oils. Only time will tell, how they will hold up for me but so far, all is great!

The first time I started to paint with this new medium (at least for me)I must say I was surprised by the thickness of the painting because for whatever reason I expected it to be not as thick as oil! However it is thick but you can use water, which works perfectly, or a non toxic diluent from the same brand to obtain thinner layers (diluent is not that cheap but fortunately you need only a few drops to obtain a very satisfying result). It is better to start with thinner layers because it takes a few days to dry, even if it seems a little bit faster than "normal" oil painting (at least it is my impression but it should be verified)so be patient! Once you have finished to paint, you just have to clean your brush with soap if you want it to last longer...
I am still experimenting the product in order to be more familiar with it but I must say that with mixable oil painting you do not want to switch back to oil painting. In general, I think that water mixable oil has all the oil painting qualities without its big disadvantage: in effect, no strong odor, and consequently no headache, and no allergy anymore...it is safer for human and animals and more, it is a good attitude/gesture for our beautiful planet! Think of all the turpentine badly and wrongly poured in the sinks...
I saw a few books are on the market which explain how to deal with the water mixable oils but personnally I want to practice again and again to get more comfortable with the medium first.
