Celestron’s Astromaster 90AZ refractor telescope is a good choice for anyone who wants a dual purpose telescope. With more than double the light gathering power of 60mm starter scopes, it’s a great introduction to astronomy and it can double as a long range spotting scope. Bigger and more impressive than it looks in pictures, the Astromaster 90AZ is an adult size telescope that stands nearly five feet high and weighs about 20 pounds. With it’s fully illustrated quick set up guide, the telescope is easy to assemble, and the package includes an erect image prism, high and low power eyepieces, and astronomy software for your PC.
Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the Astromaster 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 20mm eyepiece (50X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (100X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the Astromaster 90AZ show me memorable views night after night. On a moonless night I like the way the 20mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium.
The AstroMaster 90 AZ also features a newly designed Alt-Azimuth mount and tripod. The tripod comes fully assembled, and the telescope simply clamps into a standard dovetail. This new tripod seems reasonably solid, I had no trouble focusing on the Moon and stars even with the high power eyepiece. An Alt-azimuth mount, of course, is best used at low to medium powers because it does not track the motion of the stars. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece, it starts drifting toward the edge-this is caused by rotation of the Earth. Celestial objects will stay in the low power field of view for three or four minutes, but with a high power eyepiece they may disappear in a minute or less.
Celestron’s AstroMaster 90 AZ is one entry level telescope that offers great views during the daytime as well as at night. The sharp optics produce a right side up image, the mount is easy to use, and the included planetarium software helps you find planets in the night sky. --Jeff Phillips
Pros:
- Crisp clear views both day and night
- Rugged refractor design
- Quick and easy no-tool set up
- Erect image prism and two eyepieces included
- Alt-Azimuth mount doesn’t track stars and planets
- Star pointer not so easy to use

The scope was incredibly easy to set up right out of the box. The 90mm is longer than I was expecting but still easy to carry and not heavy. I love the deep blue color. The only complaint I would have is that the accessories tray doesn't fold up with the tripod part, you have to remove it. That is the only drawback I've found thus far.
I was able to line up Jupiter easily and see it better than I have before. Could see 4 moons and the bands on it clearly. I haven't been able to see Saturn yet, but should be able to see its rings with the magnification it has with just the lenses that came with it. Can't wait to try out my barlow lens with it.
It has great power for such a low price. I still can't believe it was only $200. It is an incredible telescope. I would highly recommend it for beginners or advanced users.
[UPDATE] It's the next night. It's IMPOSSIBLE to tighten the panhandle without raising the altitude. For viewing the moon it's just an annoyance. For viewing planets at 50x (with the 20mm eyepiece) it's a MAJOR challenge to keep your target in view as you tighten (but I was able to get a stunning view of Saturn -- the optics are very crisp). Viewing planets or any individual star or group of stars at 100x is well nigh impossible because of the way that the altitude changes as you tighten the panhandle. To view planets at 100x you will need a better tripod mount. Lowering my rating to 3 stars. :(
[ANOTHER UPDATE] The problem is too much vertical play in the azimuth which throws off altitude. Making sure the azimuth is completely tightened before adjusting altitude helps. But it does not solve the problem. Not sure there's anything to be done except get a better tripod mount.
[ONE MORE UPDATE] Celestron customer service has been great. Service is part and parcel of a product, so I re-up to four stars.
However, where this thing really underdelivers is the stand/tripod. Mine is either busted, used or simply not up to the task. I have read some other reviews that indicate that this stand simply is the weak point of the product. Adjustments are too clunky and the slightest touch from anything brings the setup out of alignment. Mine also seemed to have a bad movement system as the film that I believe was supposed to between some inner pieces of the movement reached out of the movement and made the adjustments even tougher.
I had to revert to an alternate tripod I had available for my photography purposes, which was much better suited and actually functional. But at this price I expect something working.
The telescope itself is good I guess, once you get the object in scope. Finetune the finder at daytime, not at night when you want to focus on actual viewing.
It comes with two lenses (?) and they offer a decent different range for different types of objects.
I believe to have had a good look at saturn, but let's be honest: Do still not expect more than a look at a bright shiny round white object.
Where this shines is getting a better look at the moon. Set that at your goal and you'll be happy with what you got.
But as mentioned above, be ready to invest in a different tripod that can be adjusted on three axis or have something available already.

Es muy fácil de montar ya que viene prácticamente armado.
si como yo están empezando en esto de ver el cielo, se los recomiendo ampliamente, ya después pueden comprar otros lentes y filtros para que disfruten más pero así como viene te diviertes un montón.
Tripod is a little low (& I'm only 5'4") & not the sturdiness. Hard to keep from moving.
Red light Finder works but a little hard to line up & keep aligned (could be the tripod).
The telescope is very long - about 38" which makes taking it along a challenge. I recently went on a houseboat trip & it wasn't the easy thing to tote - but still glad I took it along.
Next: focus and photography Jupiter & Saturn. I can see me upgrading this telescope sooner than I thought.
