Customers are satisfied with the quality of the razor. They mention that it is well-made, and the Merkur blades are cheap. The razor has a bit of heft to it, and is straightforward and seem to promise increased reliability compared to the hinged models. It is forgiving enough that if you don't put pressure, you get a great value for the price. The soap is solid and lathers thick, but you have no signs of wear or fault. The replacement blade is not super tough, but the 3 parts it unscrews into are a breeze to handle.

Customers find the Merkur 180 to be easy to use. They mention that it is very newbie friendly, simple to maintain, and effective for preventing irritation. The top makes replacing blades a quick and friendly process, and the parts go together simply and tightly. They say that the cheek and neck are easy to shave with, but the chin and just under the nose takes more understanding. Overall, customers find the product to be a fine razor for anyone starting out.

Customers like the comfort of the shaver. They mention that it feels great, runs over their skin in a smoother way, and makes their skin feel baby smooth. The savve is closer, and their skin is much less irritated and prone to ingrown hairs. The parts go together simply and tightly, and it is very easy to clean. The product itself is excellent with a solid feel and very simple design, and is healthier with in-groan hairs now being an anomaly rather than a regular occurrence.

Customers like the weight of the razor. They say it has a good weight, proper balance, and just has the perfect heft. They also mention that the handle is long and the balance is ideal. The razor has heft and is top heavy, which is exactly what you want. The weight and feel of the long handle and the balanced weight is ideal, allowing for more control and a better shave. The menthol scent is light and not overpowering.

Quality of the shave. For me, there are two types of shave; the "cosmetic" or "work day" shave vs. the barber quality shave. The first I call "cosmetic" because it looks like I've shaved, i.e., I can go to work with it looking good, but if I rub my face, I can feel what others cannot see. The cosmetic shave is a "one pass" shave with the grain. This is a work day shave because I get up early enough in the morning, I'm not getting up five minutes earlier to have the time for a barber quality shave. The barber quality shave is a two pass shave; rinse and re-lather after the first pass and shave against the grain the second time around. This razor excels at both, and the second pass shave, saved for special occasions, is exquisite--incredibly smooth results. This is the shave that I want when that special woman's fingers or lips caress my cheek. The Merkur more than delivers, I couldn't be more pleased.
Some people are concerned with the dangers of handling blade changes. All I can say to that is if you have a problem with changing the blades in this razor, you should stay out of the kitchen . . . or grow up.
Maintenance. Always take care of your tools. I rinse thoroughly and then wipe the razor (not the blade) completely after use. This keeps it nice and shiny and prevents soap residue buildup.
The other tools required. A great shave requires more than just a really good razor; if you are using soap from a can, you're only halfway there with the razor. High quality shaving soap or cream and a shave brush are prerequisites. The latter should be badger bristle only. Good badger shave brushes can be found on Amazon at reasonable prices. Note that it is common to lose a bristle or two on occasion. If you are losing more than that every time you use the brush, then you have a defective brush. This can happen even with highly respected brands, but it doesn't happen that often. My first two brushes lasted 20 years each, my third, only six months (my fourth has had no issues).
I finish up with an essential oils (no alcohol) shave balm. It's expensive, but only two drops are required per shave. This makes my face feel and smell great without the latter being noticeable to anyone who isn't in my embrace.
Bottom line: Great razor for experienced users, does an excellent job when used properly. Inexperienced users might want to use some caution until shaving with the Merkur becomes second nature. Shave properly and you will not only experience the best of shaves with the Mekur, but will actually look forward to shaving as something pleasurable rather than an annoying chore.
I have been shaving with a Braun electric for the last couple of years, having given up wet-shaving because of the rising costs and decreasing quality of the 20-bladed 1.21 gigawatt disposable monstrosities that have all but replaced safety razors. The Braun is a great electric razor but I simply miss wet shaving and the close, lasting shave that I used to get (I used to skip a day between shaves when I used a razor - the Braun is every day or deal with the scruff).
So I'm in a Wal-Mart looking for hair tonic (lose the J. Crew and Bed Head, guys - Vitalis is the stuff!) and right next to it I notice a 10-pack of double-edged safety blades for all of about $1.75. The gates of Heaven opened above my head and angels with clean, close shaves were blowing trumpets! I remembered being a kid and fooling around with my grandfathers' safety razor and marvelling at these heavy metal shaving tools. I remembered watching them shave, and the way they would smell afterwards. It was the small of manhood and all of the men in my family had 'that smell.' How did I even forget that this was how men used to shave and that we still have athe option? It was the most amazing trip I ever had to a Wal-Mart. I look around to see if they sold the actual safety razor handles. Nada. OK - back to par-for-the-course with Wal-Mart.
I came back home, did a bit of research, and decide that I will purchase the Merkur 180. I purchased it along with a sample pack of blades, some Poraso shaving soap, and a Tweezerman Badger-hair brush. I picked up a Pinaud styptic pencil locally, just in case, and I already have some Pinaud Clubman aftershave lotion (ladies love the Clubman!). I was hesitant about the cost of the razor but it was pointed out this this is a tooled metal machine that will last a lifetime, not a scrap of plastic designed to fail deliberately.
When I took it out of the box, I noticed that the handle is not as long as I thought it would be - but it's a good length. It looks exactly like it does in the picture so it's just something mental. I mention this because I was tempted to save a couple of buck and get the short-handled version. I am glad that I didn't. Not that this handle is short - the scale of the razor and the angle of the razor in the image just make it appear longer to me.
I loaded the Merkur with the single sample Merkur blade that came in the box with the handle. The head is solidly screwed to the handle and it came off cleanly with no wobble. The blade fit perfectly on the plate and the posts of the head fit perfectly through the holes in the blade. This means the blade was dead-centered in the head and perfectly parallel (meaning 2 perfect and identical shaving faces).
I have just had my first wet-shave in ages. WOW - how I've missed this. The hot water, the characteristic 'sccchhhcrape' sound of the razor through the whiskers, the fresh smell of the soap. This handle is simply perfect. The balance is perfect for my hand and grip, the weight has just enough heft to it without being heavy - just enough to let the razor do the job without any effort from me. And finally - the head seems to just get to the right angle on its own. I found that once I got started I never had to stop and think about how I was holding it. It simply worked.
Before shaving I double-checked on how to use a safety razor:
Hydrate the beard with a hot, wet towel scrub
Warm the razor and wet the brush
Lather! lather! lather! Circular motion - get soap on all sides of the hair
Razor @ approx 30-35 degrees to the face
Let the weight of the handle do the work - Don't push!
Shave 1 pass with the direction of the beard
Alternate both edges of the blade and rinse frequently
Keep the skin wet
Lather again!
Shave another pass slightly diagonal to the beard
Feel around yer ugly gob and touch up where needed
Rinse face and tools, handle nicks
Dry tools
Splash on the aftershave
Truth told - I had a minor nick here and there but a quick dab with the styptic pencil and you don't even see where they were. No worse than the nicks I used to get with the Gillette-Mach-Whatever. It's a much better shave than the Braun electric, I am amazed at how well I did on my first pass, the shave is remarkably close and will only get better with practice, and I feel like a badass.

Razor is well weighted and amazing craftsmanship, the chrome finishing and knurling on handle is work of art. You can't go wrong with this razor. After lot of consideration finally made a jump. Use the feather blades and it just glides on the skin.
Use an appropriate pre shave oil and start with the razor, no irritation, cuts etc.
Perfect for the BBS shave in just two rounds.
The butterfly design is the one where the head of the razor opens up like wings to change the blade. See my other review on the Mn Essentials Safety Razor. The 3 piece razor on the other hand is a dis-assembling solution. You unscrew the blade holding components from the handle. The "3 piece" name comes from it's design which results in dismounting the handle, the blade holder and the top.
After some shopping I found a Merkur 180 at a decent price on Amazon. Note that this razor is also known as the 23c. This is a 3 piece razor that offers a longer than standard handle. Most razors have a 3 inches handle. Being a tall man, that size feels too small in my hand. I opted for a Merkur razor based on the number of positive reviews out there. Another razor that would of been a contender is the one from Edwin Jagger. It has just as many praises, but I couldn't find one within my target price range (less than $40). Yeah, these puppies can fetch a pretty steep price.

From a blade servicing perspective, the butterfly solution is clearly more user friendly and you will never be concerned that your digits are at risk. Now this is where the benefits stop I think. Since the basic butterfly solution essentially just holds the blade in place, it doesn't offer any angling for the said blade. It is just sitting in one straight position. The 3 piece razor on the other hand, squeezes the blade in place thus curbing it a little. This curvature can further be adjusted by tightening the razor or alternatively, by loosening it. Plainly said it offer better geometry. Seams like a silly detail?! To my surprise, this morning's shave was superb.
We can assume that the design objective of the butterfly opening was to make the blade replacement a risk free adventure. As much as I agree with that objective, the 3 piece design wins in the actual shaving space.
As for the razor itself, it has a very nice chrome finishing. Every piece shows detailed craftsmanship. The razor feels appropriately heavy, which is an important quality as the weight of the razor helps when shaving so that you are not putting pressure and risking unnecessary cuts and nicks. Merkur razors are made in Germany and the stereotype of excellence for German fabrication is justified.
The Test Stage:
• Fresh out of the shower
• Proraso Sensitive Pre-Shave cream (white jar)
• Proraso Sensitive Shaving Foam (white can)
• Merkur 180 Razor
• Shark Super Chrome Blade
I mention the blade because as with all things, I am sure that there will be small differences between each brand and that some will perform better than others. On my first test with a safety razor, it was a butterfly type with a Rockwell blade. At the time, I blamed the blade for my bad experience. Now I am more inclined in thinking it was simply the geometry limitation of the butterfly razor. Whatever the cause, I will be trying a number of different blades to narrow it down to the better shaving experience possible and obviously retry the Rockwell blades.
Having my face foamed up, I was ready for the shave. Each stroke was smooth, effortless and comfortable. Rinsing the razor between passes was a breeze. In fact it was going so well I was almost wondering why I waited a few days before trying this razor. I was suspicious that once the shave was completed I would be once again dealing with numerous tiny cuts and nicks all over my face. But no, it was literally a perfect shave.
The Merkur razor was not cheap at $38, but when you factor in the very low cost of the blades you are in fact ahead. Pacts of 100 blades sell for anywhere between $8 - $50. The norm appears to be about $15 for 100 blades or $0.15 a blade. The word on the street is that a blade will be good for 1-3 shaves. Let's say 2 shaves per blade for a total of 200 shaves for $15 of blades and $38 for the razor for a total of $53. That should more or less cover your shaving needs for some 6 months. The Gillette cartridge blades are easily $30 for 4 these days. Each of these last me about a month, plus the cost of the razor itself at about $15. Up front the cost are in the same ball park. You are ahead with the double edge razor after the first 4-6 months as your next 100 blades will cost you $15 as opposed to $30 +. I mention this because aside from the actual shave, the recurring argument from the double edge razor enthusiasts is the reduced cost.
In summary, the build quality is impeccable and shaving with this tool was a perfect experience.
The rating of this razor: To me it's a simple 5 / 5.

1. This is a long handled razor. They way you hold these razors is different. Hold it from the tip of the handle and let the weight of the razor do the cutting. You don't need to apply pressure at all. You might exert too much pressure and up cutting yourself if you hold it like you would hold a regular cheap razor. With that being said, I thought I would need this Long Handled version but it's not needed at all. The regular size razors like the Merkur 34C would be ideal for someone new to DE shaving and coming from cheap razors. So, you may have a hard time adjusting to the proper way to hold this razor.
2. The next thing is to get good razor blades. I don't have experience with an extensive list because I just started using them myself. I ordered the 30-pack of Feathers and they came with a pack of Blue Birds as well. I started with the Blue Birds because I didn't want to cut my face off with the Feathers. After two Blue Bird Razors, I switched to the Feathers and have been getting great shaves. I only recently realized how good they were because I switched back to the Blue Birds and basically had the most irritating shave ever. The fresh blade was tugging, plucking, all that jazz. The Feathers never do this with me, even when I go against the grain. They go right through the hair without any struggle.
3. Choosing a badger brush and a good shaving soap/cream is entirely up to you and what you prefer. Just make sure you get good blades, and make sure you hold the razor properly.
For comparison, if you have a fusion proglide, you probably hold it in the middle where all the rubber grips are. If you can hold that proglide from where the battery is, that's what it's like to use this Long Handled version. If you're not comfortable with that, you should probably get a classic length safety razor like the 34C.
