I've primarily used box traps over the years and they take up a lot of room in the boat. You can stack five of these traps in the same space as a single box trap. These traps work well if you like to crab from a kayak where space is at a premium. I stack 12 of these in a bushel basket in my kayak.
I added a small float to the down strings and this seems to keep the strings from getting under the crab(s) and ejecting them on the pull. I use cut pool noodles (Dollar Store) for my floats. (see pics)
The rings are of sufficient diameter whereas you can put 2 baits in a trap and on multiple occasions this has produced multiple crabs in a single trap. If you're a crabber, you've pretty much come up with ingenious ways to improve on your equipment over the years. This is a trap that will serve you well.
If you are a beginner and looking to take the kids to the dock for a family day of fun, this is the trap you want. Doesn't take up much space in the car and with an upgrade on the strings, you'll be the hero in providing the kids with a day of fun and a tasty meal!
In summary , these are a great buy for either the beginner or experienced crabber.

First things first, the wire mesh....you have to rinse (even soak with fresh water) after each use to prevent corrosion/rust. It will happen eventually but you can at least extend the life by practicing this simple maintenance. I heard you can also use marine paint, the stuff they put on the bottom of boats to prevent corrosion but you need to get any film leftover from manufacturing off the wire for the paint to stick well (I think a quart of rustoleum costs around $6).
Now, if you've ordered these traps far enough in advance, go out and buy a small roll of braided polyester string....the stuff masons use to snap lines when laying down pavers, etc. I suggest braided because it's better than twisted and is rot resistant. Replace the 3 cotton strings that came with the ring with this stuff. Make sure when you tie the 3 ends together, you form some sort of an overhand loop so you can attach the main line to it later. That metal S thing? Get rid of it. It will end up snagging your trap or worse, come loose from the main line and you'll lose your crab ring.
As for the main line, depending upon your budget again, you could get some lead line that professional crabbers get (it sinks and lasts for years) or you can pick up a $10 bag of propolylene/nylon rope from home depot/lowe's. I like this kind of rope because it's easier on your hands. I use 1/4" line. Go to the area where they have the bulk spools of rope on the shelves. You can feel the different kinds and read up on the durability of each type and also figure out which diameter line you like.
Weight. In most cases, you will need additional weight if there's any type of current. These rings are susceptible to getting turned all over the place in current and not settling right. What I do is get some fishing sinkers from the store (I use 1 ounce) and I get the kind with the metal loop at the top. Using a cable tie, I attach the weight to the center of the trap on the inside. I always bring extra sinkers in case I need more weight.
Another tip is how you bait the ring. You can buy stainless steel bait clips on amazon, 12 to a bag for $9.99. Attach 2-4 clips to the ring with cable ties. Here's a secret, you will catch more crabs with more baits in the trap. Crabs will feed together but they like their own "plate", wouldn't you? Try to spread the baits around the center.
You may ask yourself, why buy these rings if I have to spend even more money on them to do better? Well, you can use them as is and I wouldn't go through the trouble buying crab rings with cotton mesh because those things don't last for more than a trip or so. My tips are to make these rings perform better and last longer. But at a minimum, get rid of that S metal ring thing. It will cause you so much trouble and lost crabs, trust me. Or use some pliers and crimp them shut so the line can't slide off and the S won't snag your trap or anything else for that matter.
Good luck.
