Why Play with Climber Toys?
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
Physical + Motor SkillsClimbing activates both upper and lower body strength, and helps build fine motor skills with the gripping motion. Plus, the excitement of being outside and running around a playset does a kid’s body good! |
Critical ThinkingWith each movement, kids have to evaluate where they are and where they should reach or step next. And, each climbing “route” is a new challenge kids need to overcome. |
Language + Social SkillsClimbers are great for many kids to play together with the open design. When kids play together, they communicate with each other as they take turns. They also learn critical skills like patience and sharing, and new words like “step”, “climb”, and “slide”. |
Creativity + Role PlayGetting outside to play breaks their usual routine, allowing them to open their imaginations. Playing together helps kids to work out storylines and learn to improvise based on what someone does or says. |
Play Together!
- Capture the Flag: Race to the top with friends and see who can reach the flag first! This is a great game for both one-on-one play or with teams. Reset the flag to play again, noting which team catches the flag the most at the end of 10 or 15 minutes of active play.
- Pretend Play: What will your climber be today? From pirate ship, to airplane, cruise ship, and more, there’s so many ways to get creative!
- Make sharing the clean-up responsibilities fun with your child. Putting yard toys away in a designated storage area when playtime is over will help foster good habits, show an example of teamwork, and a bonus in motor skill development!

Our son is 3 and has spent countless hours climbing up and down to get the flag at the top and then replace it. He shows a pretty big preference for climbing on one side of it because he is most familiar with that side and where to put his feet to climb back down. We actually like this because that means there is plenty of room for him to grow into it and learn to climb in other ways. It is a lot of fun for a small group of kids to climb together and works really well for a wide range of children. I think children from crawling age through middle school would show interest because of the multi-level play. We have had a crawler climbing in and out of the lower part while a few others climbed and it was great fun! My husband and his adult brother had a ball on it as well!
** Quick update: My son is now 8 and we have 3 more children. This has been outside in our Pennsylvania weather for 5 years. Our 4 children and their friends still use it very often and it is the first thing they run to when they get off the school bus in nice weather. It has shown no evidence of wear or fading and still looks just as it did when we bought it. Other parents often say they love it and want one too and several have purchased their own. This gets just as much use as the swing set if not a little more. Very happy with this purchase and I feel confident it will resell well when we're finished with it.
**Update #2 (Spring 2022) Still going strong! My son is now 11.5 years old. He is 5 feet tall and about 100 lbs and he and his friends still love to play on and around this! My 3 girls (8, 6, and 4) love it too! It doesn’t appear to be faded and everything is holding up great! It serves as a base for laser tag and a reading nook among other things. I should also mention that we live at the top of a hill and it is very very windy here at times. The wind has never moved this. I honestly think this is the very best play related investment we have made. It has moved with us twice and been through 8(?) Pennsylvania summer and winters with us. I’ve never found a wasp nest on it and it still wows all the guests. Highly recommend!
Got this for our 3 year old daughter. She is average in Terms of physical prowess - maybe even a bit puny- so I was worried she would need to grow into it because it’s technically for older kids. SHE LOVES IT. Not only does she climb it with her friends and cousins, the bottom part she uses as her little cave. Her and the kids also love the middle part where you can just hang out.
When we first got it, our daughter was afraid to try and climb. We guided her but encouraged and borderline forced her to figure things out on her own if she got stuck. Within 2 weeks of semi-regular play, she got the hang of it and is able to climb to the top even though she is almost too short to go from the rope part to the boulder part. This is all just to say that I’m so impressed with the Boulder and how it encourages kids to keep active and problem solve. It’s a real confidence builder too.
There have been days where she is super into it and other days where she doesnt even look twice at it but it’s stull worth the money. Every time we have kids over, it ends up being popular and they figure out a new way to make up games for it.
It’s lighter that I imagined but sturdy. My 170 pound husband will hang on it and purposefully try to tip it but it won’t budge
Late 2020, I moved it to his bedroom. As it became a huge topic while on zoom… “Why, yes, that is a mountain in my living room… doesn’t everyone have one?” Lol. Good time to move it. Yes, moving it requires taking most of it apart and putting it back together. He seemed to enjoy it, but it took up a larger chunk, we slid a crib mattress into the bottom area and made a little sleeping nook for him and our 2yr old to snuggle up and sleep. I finally moved it outside last year. My younger child loves the outdoors and I needed to make room in the bedroom.
It has now been outside since about March 2022, and while it is ignored a little more than when indoors, it still gets a lot of play time. My kids are now 5 1/2 and 7.
We live in the northern Midwest states and the weather beats down on it, however our mountain is still standing strong! This was one of the best toy investments ever! And, I have been a mom to 4 active boys since 1999!
