Directions

Properly training your pet to use a ramp is essential for success. Prior to first use, allow your pet to become familiar with the ramp. Train him or her to walk on the ramp flat before using it in an inclined position. Offer treats or a favorite toy to your pet from the opposite end of the ramp. Offer reassurance and give your pet plenty of praise as he or she walks on it. As your pet becomes more comfortable, incline the ramp in small increments and continue training before using with a vehicle or other higher surface. My brother let me borrow his ramp which is the narrower and shorter one in the pictures. My 10yr old Doberman had difficulty getting up the ramp due to the angle and not so grippy sandpaper like material. Going down was not so much an issue.I purchased the longer and wider ramp hoping the angle would be less steep and the increased width would give him more room. It was a slight improvement, but in all honesty, the TRACTION MATERIAL IS THE CULPRIT in hindering my dog's ability to go up the ramp. After reading a review in which someone used car floor mats (rubber) on top of the sandpaper material, I decided to try the same technique. YES! It worked. I hope the company/companies that make this style of ramps read these reviews. Please change the flooring material.

We adopted a senior husky (11 years old) 7 months ago and like most big dogs her backend is getting worse as she ages. We ordered the large ramp so it would go to at least 7 feet to cut down on the inclines. I was debating how to train her as she's quite "set in her ways" now. :0) So I thought, well, she has to go potty, so we'll lay it at the back door which forced her to walk on it to go potty. I put a chair beside it so when we opened the door, the only way out, was walking on the ramp. :0) We ensured it didn't move and kept it at the shortest length so she'd get used to it and trust that it wasn't going anywhere. We did that for almost 2 weeks with no treats needed. :0) She was hesitant at first, of course, but within about 48 hours she was walking in and out as if it wasn't there. Today was our test!!! I didn't realize how much she and I had missed going for our rides in the morning. To ensure there wasn't much of an incline, I moved the car to the front yard where we have a slight decline since we live on a little hill and put the ramp up to the door opening. This helped the ramp be a bit more level with as little an incline as possible. We didn't want a huge change from having it on the porch and take a chance she wouldn't walk on it. She walked right up it and got in the car!! Very exciting!! I used the same method letting her out of the car. I parked the car beside a curb so the ramp was again a little more level to the car. Again, in and out!! She was so excited to be going for a ride again!! We had tried steps in the past and it was still wearing on her backend and plus she'd always try to just jump out instead of going back down the steps. This ramp is fabulous!!! It fits in the trunk, and it's light weight but sturdy so it's just so great all around. Nice and wide as well. Wanted to share these few ideas with everyone and send lots of love to all the dog lovers out there!!!!

This is a great Ramp!

I have two Labradors. My oldest is 14 years old and weighs 79 lbs. My youngest is 4 years old and weighs 84 lbs. My oldest is still very agile for her age but my youngest has knee problems. I bought this ramp for her. She can not jump into my Kia Soul and does not like being lifted in. I did a lot of research when I decided to purchase a ramp. I read every review on every style of ramp listed on Amazon. I'm not exaggerating...it took several days. By the way "My Dog Hated It" isn't a helpful review. Of course your dog hated it. My dogs hated it too until I paid them to like it. (Paid with treats)

So here's some pros, cons and thoughts about this ramp.
Pros
1. Its was the widest one I could find, so my chunky lab with wide set shoulders had plenty of run to walk on it.
2. It was is sturdy enough for both dogs to be on it at the same time. (84lbs + 79lbs = 163 lbs). It looks to be well made and it doesn't bow or flex when they are on it.
3. The ramp is long enough to make the incline to the car reasonable. My youngest lab is not adventurous at all so a steep incline would have been problematic.
4. Its got a side handle for easy carrying.
5. The sand paper like texture provide a nice non-slip surface. I did not find it to be too rough as some had mentioned in their reviews.

Cons
1. Its a bit long when its at its shortest length. It DOES fit into my Kia Soul with the back seats down but it takes up more room then I like. I wished it was a tri-fold.
2. The Sand Paper like texture shows nail scratches easily. It is a dog ramp and not a fashion runway so I should keep that in perspective.
3. It doesn't have a locking mechanism for when it's slid closed. If I were the designer I would have added that. It's not a deal breaker for me but I could see it being for others.

Some additional thoughts..
1. I can't stress enough that most dogs will need to be trained to use it or any ramp. I followed the advise of another reviewer and started with laying it flat on the ground fully extend. I left it out so they could sniff it and get use to it. Then I used treats to get them to walk across it. Once they were OK walk across it, I raised it a couple of inches. Using treats, I had them walk across it some more. Once they were comfortable I raised it again. It took four 30 minute sessions to get them to use it on our back steps. I left it on our back steps for 3 days and then stated training to use it with the car. It worked.

2. It weighs 17lbs. It slides easily when you need to stow it away but it has some weight to it and its a bit awkward. I can lift it in and out of my car without any trouble while holding onto my dogs leashes but I am fairly strong. Also I am use to putting larger heavier items in the back of my car. With that said, I still worked with my dogs on sitting and waiting for me to put it away before getting up and moving around. I didn't want them pulling on their leashes while I am manhandling it into the back of the car.

Mr. Muffins is like me, with arthritis greatly limiting his movement. I needed a ramp that would safely support him at 85 lbs, but that wouldn't be too heavy or cumbersome to manage since I am crippled. This ramp is just barely within my ability to use.

I keep the ramp inside my Ford Excursion just behind the front seats. I always have the rear seats down and removed for hauling gear. The ramp fits fine width wise. I am able to pull it out the driver's rear side door but do have to be careful not to hit the inside panel of the door. I lay the top end that is slightly dovetailed on top of my homemade running boards. This leaves over 2' that he still has to ascend after using the ramp.

So far I haven't needed to extend the ramp. If we were using the rear cargo doors as the point of ingress he would need the ramp fully extended. The truck sits high with airbags and 37" tires. Collapsed the ramp is just barely short enough to use if parked just right next to another vehicle. That makes him ascend from the side of the ramp instead of heading up straight. It took weeks for him to stop trying to ascend from the side. He now knows to walk up straight.

If he gets a little bit of a running start he can usually make it all the way into the truck by himself. Otherwise I have to give him a little push to help him hop his hind legs up the last couple feet. During rare times when he feels like he used to he prefers to bypass the ramp and jump int the truck on his own.

The grip on the climbing portion of the ramp is very rough with a tight, sharply bumpy pattern. It works well and so far is fairly durable. His claws leave marks where he scratches but I am not concerned that it might rip. It is industrial strength. To clean it would probably require a strong sprayer. It collects all debris from his paws. Strangely no fur sticks to it. I use hand sanitizer after handling it.

Even though the construction of this ramp is aluminum it is very stout and very heavy. It took me a few tries to figure out how to handle it in a way that didn't let it telescope and hit me in the legs or anywhere else. There is a strap that has a snap to hold it together. You do not want it to accidentally slide and hit anything as it will cause damage.

I am happy with this purchase and almost always keep it in my truck. I often have to carry guitars in the back of my truck exactly where I store the ramp. This is a concern because the grip is so rough it will easily tear up a soft or leather case. If hauling groceries or other objects you don't want sliding around in your vehicle, this will do a good job of keeping your gear in place.

As previously mentioned Mr. Muffins is about 85 lbs and 27" at the shoulder. He is a Malamut. He used to be very athletic, could clear a 4' fence but no longer gets out very often. He is hesitant to use the ramp and has fallen off a few times, only due to his hesitations and getting a weak running start, or coming at an awkward angle. We are almost always parked on a hill when loading. The ramp is wide enough that it is very stable. Even if the bottom of it is rocking on uneven ground, it doesn't bother him at all, which is strange. He will still often howl in protest about using the ramp. He does not yet ever try ascending by himself. He needs me to stand beside him while he climbs, I think because he is scared of falling again. Perhaps sometime when we are on level ground with lots of space I will train him to use it by himself. He doesn't need the ramp when getting out, he still jumps down to the running boards, then down to the ground.

There were no other telescoping pet ramps I could find when shopping that were this sturdy. While the weight is a huge tradeoff I have no worries of the ramp failing. I read too many reviews of other ramps with dogs similar and smaller in side that had bowed, caved, and broken under the weight. This ramp is so sturdy I wouldn't hesitate to use it for light to medium duty loading chores of equipment using a narrow dolly.

Being aluminum there is still no rust after months of use. We have used it many times in the rain and there has been no issues of him slipping. The only times he slips and scratches the track is when the angle is too steep. He tries to dig in with his claws instead of using his paws so he loses too much surface area pressure if at too much of an angle. I am happy with this purchase. The puppy isn't crazy about it but since I can no longer pick him up by hand, this let's me still take him to his favorite places.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sturdiest ramp on the market IMO

I love this ramp. I used to have a plastic ramp by PetGear which I’ve had for almost a decade and held up very well, but one of my dogs is 210 pounds so I needed to get something sturdier with a higher weight limit. I use this 4-6 times a day (depending how many times we go out) and it’s the best thing I’ve ever bought. The sandpaper gives a really nice grip, rainy days are not an issue either. I like the raised edges as well so the dog can’t easily fall off. This thing is tough as nails. (i’ve had a couple of other ramps and stairs in the past, but this one is the crème de la crème.) It’s kind of heavy for a weakling like me, but I don’t care about that, it makes me feel very confident allowing my 210 pound dog to walk on it!! So it better be heavy, I don’t want some cheap little plastic light thing bending under my dog’s weight if you know what I mean. Best purchase I’ve ever made for my dog and I’m always getting compliments on it wherever I go. People take a picture of it to see what brand it is etc. By the way, at the end video I Zoom in on the hole we drilled at the top so that we can clip it into our car because our bumper protector goes under the ramp to protect our bumper which makes the ramp unsteady. But truthfully even without the bumper protector, I’ve always drilled a hole in our ramps so that I can clip it into our car. (We once had a dog fall off a ramp because it came loose from the car bumper and he ended up dislocating his shoulder. Very upsetting!) So if you never want that to happen, drill a hole and clip it in to be safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, sturdy ramp

Bought this ramp because the last ramp I bought snapped although technically it should have taken my dog's weight. This is very different - a sturdy ramp which takes the weight of my 60kg Leonberger without any flex or bending which has given him great confidence when using it. The surface is a bit like an emery board so there's no slipping at all. It's reasonably heavy for a woman to manoever around but very doable and the handle helps a lot. I like the fact it extends out quite a long way so the gradient is never too steep. We practised with the dog walking on it on the floor at first with a treat at the end and there was no problem when transferring to the car. Highly recommend for large dogs.
