Product Description

The Springer Dog Exerciser is used by over 600,000 dog-loving bicyclists, mushers, and K9 corps around the world. It uses a low-mounted, heavy-duty steel spring to absorb up to 90% of the force of a dog's unexpected tugs, which allows bike riders to keep their balance, while also protecting their dogs from traffic, pedals, and wheels. Its patented safety release frees your dog instantly if he/she gets caught around a tree or hydrant. The safety release is attached to a sturdy 18” rope cord that is knotted through the appropriate hole, depending on your dog’s size and strength. Use the largest end for dogs that are strong pullers. Manufactured in Norway, it’s super easy to install and you have the option to exercise two dogs simultaneously with the Springer Extra Arm Kit, which is sold separately. The attachment fits most regular, touring, and mountain bikes. Harness not included, so please be sure to use a harness that is appropriate for your dog’s breed.

The Safety Release

The “safety release” instantly frees your dog should a post, tree or hydrant come between you. The safety release will break so to avoid injury to you and your dog.

The safety release is attached to a sturdy 18” rope that is knotted through the appropriate hole, depending on dog’s strength. Use the largest end if he is a strong puller.

Each Springer Kit comes with 10 safety releases, 1 rope leash and 1 metal clip.

The Clamp

The clamp fits most regular, touring and mountain bikes. You need 3.5” of vertical space on the bike frame or the seat stem. It features a channel for cables. (One clamp is included in the Springer kit.)

Between trips, you can remove the Springer in two seconds by simply releasing the cotter pin.

Buy an extra clamp for an additional bike. This way you can easily move the Springer Arm from one bike to the other.

The Adapter

The adapter will enable you to lower or raise the Springer arm on your bike 4 inches up or down without moving the Springer bracket or clamp. This will clear the arm from skimming your heel as you pedal. This 4-inch difference enables the Springer to fit on more bike models.

Adapter is sold separately.

The Springer has given me the gift of safely exercising two highly energetic Chessies at once while I get my exercise on my hand-cycle. It took my husband a few weeks of trial-and-error to attach the exerciser and I'm so glad he finally made it work for the hand-cycle.The attachment as sold is designed for typical bicycles, but if you have a hand-cyle, which is like an adult tricycle, there really is no way to conveniently attach it. My hand-cycle is wheelchair height, and I operate it like one when I need to go in reverse, so I presume it will also work for wheelchairs. The key is to have a raised bar to attach the Springer, otherwise, it will be too low and the leash will interfere with the wheels when the dogs pull me ahead. Here's my husband's genius idea to attach the springer:He got these parts from the local home improvement store:1 heavy duty padded arm hanger2 - 3 feet long vinyl coated galvanized cables*4 - double ended snap hook3 hose clamps2 sets of the aluminum ferrule and stop set4 cable ties1 screw that match the size of the bolt that comes with the springerFrom the Container Store:1 elfa utility large basket* We found that if the cable is too long, it can get caught in the wheels, so it was a matter of trial and error to find the perfect length that works for my bike. You will need to adjust this length to your bike. The length we arrived at gives our dogs enough room to run alongside me without getting their paws run over.I found the elfa basket to be the perfect width and size to store things behind the seat like treats, water bottles, drinking cups, poop bag holder, garage door opener, baby wipes (my hands get dirty from handling the wheels), etc. My husband used the cable ties to attach the basket to the bike. The basket has turned out to be one of the best accessories we got for the bike.My husband attached the arm hanger to the bottom of the seat. He then attached the springer to the hanger as high as it will go in order for the galvanized cable leashes to clear the wheels. The metal on the Springer is heavy and needs reinforcement, so he secured it with a second screw in order to balance the product's entire weight on the bike otherwise it feels loose and unsecured, which is why I rated this 4 stars. We found the plastic ring to be extremely weak, which is why we replaced with the double-ended snap hook cables. They hook onto the springer on one end and the dogs' pulling harnesses on the other. To keep the dogs from getting tangled up with each other, I also attach a leash to their collars that attach to the handcycle grip.Just for experimental purposes, I tried to go biking with the dogs without the Springer and they pulled me in all directions. I felt every tug and jerky motions. Once they are attached to the Springer, I could not feel much of their tugging because the attachment absorbs most of the force. When the dogs see a bird or squirrel and want to go after it, I can feel a slight tug and have enough time to steer in the opposite direction. After biking for over 600 miles, the Springer is still holding up to our show ponies. Many people at the park have asked about the springer and I have pointed them here to get theirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Update: Excellent Customer Service and Very Sturdy Product
Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2022
UPDATE: I took my 130 lb Malamute camping and we tried the Springer with 2 quick laps arround my culdesac. He did ok, but was unsure of what we were trying to accomplish. We then went on a four day camping trip over Memorial weekend. Maverick figured it out and LOVED it!!! He's a puller and being a large dog, I was very happy with the strenght and stability of the Springer. It did not pull my bike out from under me and my dog felt the tension and came back to closer range. I did add an 18" bungee lead from the Springer - knowing theirs was not sufficient to hold my Big Doggo! LOVE THIS! Would high recommend it to anyone with a monster sized dog!

Original Review: I ordered this and it arrived in 3 days! I went to install it on my bike and the hardware was missing from the packaging. (Obvious packing error - no biggy). So I called and told them about it and mentioned I was planning a trip in 4 days and would love to have it by then. Replacement items arrived in 2 days! They were awesome! I honestly haven't tried it but going around the block (too much rain!) but I'll update/do another review when I have used it a bit more. But they deserve 5 stars for their customer service for sure!!!!

The key is to have a raised bar to attach the Springer, otherwise, it will be too low and the leash will interfere with the wheels when the dogs pull me ahead.

Here's my husband's genius idea to attach the springer:

He got these parts from the local home improvement store:

1 heavy duty padded arm hanger
2 - 3 feet long vinyl coated galvanized cables*
4 - double ended snap hook
3 hose clamps
2 sets of the aluminum ferrule and stop set
4 cable ties
1 screw that match the size of the bolt that comes with the springer

From the Container Store:
1 elfa utility large basket

* We found that if the cable is too long, it can get caught in the wheels, so it was a matter of trial and error to find the perfect length that works for my bike.
