The magnet is running off a 12v 2A power supply controlled by a TIP122 on the negative side. It holds solidly, definitely can't pry it apart with my hands. I may not have tested it with a winch and a force gauge, but I'm convinced you couldn't get the plate off without using some tools. I was concerned you might be able to slide the plate off laterally, but the plate won't budge once the unit is on, so that's a plus if you're using this for unintended solutions not involving a door.
There is a little residual magnetism left over after the unit disengages, but that's normal and it's not strong.
I tested it over one hour powered on. The unit got a little warm but not hot, and stayed under 100 degrees. If you had this hooked up to a door, or some other large object which would act as a heatsink, I don't think you'd have a problem with it getting too hot and burning anything up, and you shouldn't have any problem even if it isn't attached to something large.
Overall I think this was a good buy.
I was really shocked at how small and flimsy the two mounting screws are. They will be the first to shear off when someone tries to force open the door. So in reality we actually have a lock that will fail with only 40 or 50lbs of force. Not 600 lbs.
Yes, the magnet probably has 600 lbs of holding force but the two little screws that hold the magnet to the door frame will quickly fail.
In closing, I find it hard to believe that the manufacturer provides 8 large holes and screws to attach the base plate to the door frame but then only uses two tiny screws to attach the magnet to the base plate.
Ridiculous.
To improve the strength of this magnet design I added an aluminum plate then drilled and tapped it into the side of the manger to prevent to two mounting screws from failing. Thus is obviously something that most people cannot do. So be careful before you purchase thus magnet. It's a false sense of security. It will fail under extreme stress.
Hope this helps. :-)
Unfortunately, we had a robbery on 09/16/20 and all of a sudden the mechanism failed. It was a big deal because the robber hit one of my employees and she was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
We checked our power, the power adapter/step down, the switch, the conveying wire/cord of the power but everything perfect and lastly we check the little electromagnetic board w IC chip on it seemed to be messed up. Therefore, had to order another same model ASAP.
I have requested my Ausrian Insurance which I had added with my last purchase of this lock on 11/19/1919 as it must be covered per their assurance.
PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS EXACT MODEL IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE.
