Italian meringue buttercream is one of my specialties and a favorite at our house, so lots of sugar syrup being made for the occasion. Because the temp has to be just right but can change so quickly, a digital thermometer did not work well for me as I could not leave it in the pot without it melting the thermometer itself, messing with the battery (turning on and off in the midst of cooking), or the thermometer timing out and turning off on its own.This thermometer was especially perfect because of the sliding clip -- it can clip on to my large pot for my really big batches, AND my tiny pot for my small batches (See pictures).My buttercream has come out beautifully perfect every time, I'm sure in part to the perfect temp readings. Easy to clean, easy to store (flat in a drawer or hanging on the wall). Love it!

One of my pet peeves over the years is one of design flaws. Did the person or group that designed the product, ever actually USE it, or observe 3rd parties using it? This thermometer is Exhibit "A" in bad design! Good Lord! Two red zones indicating cooking temperature zones. What color is the temperature needle? RED! What happens when it gets into the cooking zone you need? IT ALL BUT DISAPPEARS! If you're doing anything over 400 degrees, you're on your own. You simply can't see the temp needle unless you get up close and par-cook your head in the process! Grills are often dark and are backlit from the fire, and this only makes reading it even more difficult. I will be returning this one and looking for something that can actually be read where you are USING it - on the surface of the grill. DUMB!

I have bought quite a few of these and about 20% of them are inaccurate out of the box. About another 10% become inaccurate after 4-6 months use. I like them because of the scale range and readability, just wish they were more reliable.
