Powerful 1.8HP X-Torq Engine Keeps Emissions Low
The 450 delivers 3.2 horsepower, making it well-suited for medium-duty jobs, such as pruning and domestic cutting. The engine features Husqvarna's special X-Torq technology, which reduces emission levels by up to 60 percent and fuel consumption by up to 30 percent, so you'll be able to harness the power of a gas-powered chainsaw without having to worry about heavy pollutant output.
Durable Engine Built for Long Life
The 450's engine has been built to withstand years of use. It uses a three-piece crankshaft, which has been forged and compressed for superior durability. Also, the chainsaw's centrifugal air cleaning system helps preserve engine life by removing harmful debris before it reaches the filter.
Easy, Effortless Startup
With the 450, you won't have to waste precious minutes trying to start the engine. The chainsaw uses a combined choke/stop control, which allows for easy engine starting and reduces the risk of flooding. Husqvarna's Smart Start offers an engine and starter that starts quickly with minimum effort--with resistance in the starter cord reduced by up to 40 percent. It also has a specially optimized fuel pump, which keeps the fuel lines clear and helps facilitate startup.
Visible fuel level (see larger image). Quick-release air filter (see larger image).Ergonomic Design Reduces User Fatigue
The 450 has a lightweight frame that minimizes strain on your body, even after extended use. Husqvarna's LowVib anti-vibration dampeners effectively absorb vibration, sparing your arms and hands from added fatigue and allowing you to work longer and more comfortably. And it features a smartly designed rear handle with soft inlay, ergonomic trigger, and asymmetrical handle.
Premium Features for Easy Operation
The 450 is designed both for fast action when cutting and when you need to modify the chain saw while out in the field. It includes a snap-lock cylinder cover that saves you time when changing the spark plugs or cleaning the unit, quick and easy tool-less chain tensioning and assembling of the bar, and a quick-release air filter for quick replacement. And the transparent fuel indicator makes it easy to check fuel level.
Other features include an inertia activated chain brake that helps reduce the likelihood of injury due to kickback, distinct marks for better felling precision, and an air purge function that removes air from the carburetor and fuel system for easier starting. It's backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

For years I bought those $100-$200 Homelites, Craftsman and Poulans from places like Home Depot, Sears and even K-Mart. Every time I thought I was the cat's meow for pouncing on such a great deal on a chainsaw and every single time ended in utter disappointment. Every one only lasted a few years -- at most. Every single one had trouble starting after a few months -- to the point of sheer frustration! I always thought that was how chainsaws were though! You got one good season out of them and then they gave you trouble to the point where you tossed them out and bought another. I always wondered why they couldn't make a reliable, cost efficient chainsaw that lasted a long time.
Now I know! Now I know that you get what you pay for.
I own 26 acres and have TONS of mature trees on the property. They are always falling. Always blocking the road or trails. So, I use chainsaws a lot. I decided to save up and purchase one that had great reviews -- both here on Amazon and on Consumer Reports. This chainsaw had exactly what I wanted....it was cost efficient, long-lasting, light weight, reliable and had some extra bells and whistles too. Since my purchase, I've cut down over 125 trees with it and cut up enough fallen timber to make a wood pile 6 feet wide, 20 feet long and 4.5 feet high. Some of the trees I cut down were saplings, some were mid-size and some were 25 inch diameter 95-foot tall monsters. And after all that, the chainsaw still purrs like a kitten. I have not had to sharpen the chain yet either (even though I received a new chain as a gift for Christmas).
This chainsaw is a dream! From the first time I first started it until the last time I used it last month for the season, it starts on either the first, second or third pull. I have never had any problems with it at all. It is efficient on gas and can run for a good 30-40 minutes straight on one tank.
There are three really cool features with this chainsaw too:
The shocks on the handle! They really cut down on vibrations to the point where if the saw did not make any sound, you would not be able to tell you are even cutting with a chainsaw. So cool! Gone are the days of having sore arms or having that "vibration" feeling in your limbs for an hour after using one of those cheap crappy saws. It cuts like butter too. The saw is surprisingly light for its size and appearance, but the weight of the saw alone is enough pressure to cut through any tree when cutting downward. And the cuts are true and straight every time too. I always had problems with my old saws when cutting up large diameter trees. The cut would start to curve halfway through the limb and by the time I cut through, the cut-line was curved to the left and off center on the far side of the limb. It was because the chain did not have the proper angle sharpness due to wear and tear. Not so with this one -- even after all the trees I've cut up and downed. The blade is still cutting as if brand new! Still straight and true. It really makes it so much easier than I was used to.
The second cool thing is the gas and chain bar oil run simultaneous. Meaning that when you run out of gas, you also run out of chain bar oil. Also gone are the days of constantly having to open the chain bar oil reservoir and checking the oil level. When your gas runs out, your oil runs out and as long as you fill both to the top each time, you will never, ever run out of chain oil in the middle of a job.
The third and best feature is the pull start "smart start" feature. This makes it SOOO easy to start the saw. You use a bare minimum of effort to pull the cord to start it. It is so easy to pull the cord and start it.
Another cool little feature is the gas tank has a white plastic "window" to gauge how much gas is left.
I haven't had any problems with oil leakage at all.
There are more excellent little features that make this chainsaw the best too: the oil and gas caps are extremely easy to open. The caps on my old saws were a bitch to open and I always hated having to carry pliers with me to help me turn and open them. These turn easy and the grooves never clog with dust or chips. Even if they get "tight", there are screwdriver holes in the caps to help turn them. That hasn't happened to me yet, but it is nice to know they will never feel like they are welded on.
The emission output is great too. You aren't sitting in a noxious fog of gas fumes while you cut. That is really nice!
The only problem I had is the directions. They could be a little more clear and they could be "words". Instead, they are filled with tiny pictures. Weird, I know, but as long as you follow the pics, you won't have any problem at all. I do think they should revamp the directions, but that is an ever so slight gripe.
Overall, buy this saw if you are looking for a workhorse saw that you can rely on for doing any and everything you need a saw to do. Color me impressed because now I'm a lifelong Husqvarna fan and won't buy anything else. You get premium features on this saw that cost much more on other saws. From its ergonomic and light weight design, reliability, fuel efficiency and ease of operation this is a must buy for anyone!
I bought this saw refurbished to save some money. Being a novice chainsaw owner, the first thing I'll say is this saw is easy to start and easy to operate IF you follow the instructions! Some people might find it a bit of a pain to follow each of the steps each time you start the saw, but obviously Husqvarna designed it that way for a reason. I have never had trouble starting this saw when I follow the steps.
Next, before I purchased this saw I read thoroughly both pros and cons on Amazon. The first thing I did when I got it was take it down to the local dealer I trust and had them adjust the carburetor. I did this for two reasons: First, refurbished models only have a 30 day warranty on them and Second, if you don't adjust the carburetor you'll probably be unhappy. Why? Three letters - EPA. I had to take in a poll saw I bought from Husqvarna recently (before I bought this saw) because even cutting small limbs would cause the motor to bog down. When I asked the tech about this he said that EPA laws require Husqvarna to factory set their carburetors according to EPA standards. He went on to say that many people have to bring their saw complaining about this very issue and in all cases a carb adjustment was all that was needed. Bottom line: if you're a novice, take it to dealer and have the carburetor readjusted before even using the dang thing. However, if you know what you're doing, you're going to have to adjust the carburetor and not complain about it because it's not Husqvarna's fault. Blame it on the government!
Lastly, things I've learned in my short stint as a novice:
* First, a sharp chain is the single most important thing in maintaining high-performance. I read various thoughts on the subject but the one that makes sense to me is to sharpen it after every tank of gas. Others might disagree with this, but just use the method that works for you. To keep the chain sharp use whatever method works for you. I started out using a hand file with a guide. Then my dad bought me electric hand-held sharpener for Christmas and I don't think I'll ever go back.
*Second, get a peavey or some kind of tool to roll the log for better cutting. It'll save your back and your chain. I bought the "woodchuck" lumberjack tool and I'm very happy with it.
*Third, do the maintenance. Flip the bar after each tank of gas. Scrape the bar for gunk. Keep the holes in the bar meant for bar oil free of debris. Make sure the bar oil and gas are working in synchronization (they should run out at about the same rate I'm told), etc.
*Finally, learn how to make proper cuts. Husqvarna and other companies have step-by-step instructions on how to cut up a tree properly and how to make adjustments to your saw based on the type of trees your cutting. It's amazing how a pinched saw can really put a damper on your day. Not that it's hard to free up a pinched saw, it's just better not to pinch the saw in the first place! If you cut properly this shouldn't happen.
All in all I'm impressed with Husqvarna's quality and engineering in the 450. It works as advertised and has surpassed my expectations. I would recommend this saw to anybody looking to purchase a saw of this type. Don't be lured in by cheap prices. In this case, you truly get what you pay for - quality!
This saw gets compared to the Stihl all the time so I'll give my 2 cents.
Pros- The Husky starts easier. It's so easy I often forget to use the compression button. I run it a little rich on oil mix per the advice of others and it still doesn't smoke. It has little/no vibration in the grips and the controls are all very easy to operate. Sometimes my Stihl gets finicky in warm weather but this saw runs well even on a 75 deg day, often restarting w/ a single pull once it's been running.
Cons- The only downside is the Husky isn't completely tool-free like the Stihl. That's a handy feature if you're working a long way from the truck but husky does have a single nut bar which makes it easier adjust the chain. Not a big deal and it holds tight so I trust it. You just have to carry the multi-tool w/ you.
Neutrals- both saws weigh about the same, run similar chains and use the same .325" files. The Husky does have a little more plastic vs metal components but it doesn't feel cheap or appear that they're cutting any corners. Their engine is rated 0.3hp lower than the 270 but you will never notice the difference.
I've always been a Stihl guy but I decided to give Husky a try since I have other products from them and I've been very impressed with it so far!
