I now have 4 dimensional measurements available at my wrist in stead of just 1. Watch face is the Timex Expedition T49949. Zero modifications necessary for excellent cross-item accomodations.

Nice compass, good price. I have 2 for general outdoor navigation. I'm neither a pro or an amateur navigator (probably better than the average guy). I don't claim to be the end-all of compass knowledge, but I do know a good compass when I have one. When compared side by side with my Cammenga 3HJP compass, these were dead on at the 5 degree intervals! Due to size of the compass face (about the size of a 50-cent piece) the degrees are marked in intervals of 5 (small dot), 10 (larger dot), and 30 (numeric). I have used it on a compass course and did better than many with lensatic compasses. I wouldn't want to do night time navigation or an underwater course in less than optimum clear water, but daytime navigation would be fine over 1-2 miles with this. Anything further and I'd want my Compass marked in 1 degree increments. I highly recommend buying an aftermarket wristband such as my preferred "Voguestrap TX70345CA" for wrist comfort and lens protection. I found the one that comes with it to be a bit "scratchy" if worn all day or multiple days, and offers no protection to the face of the compass.

If you are looking for for just a N-S/E-W compass get something cheap. If you are looking for a decent back-up for navigation this thing is a beauty. Due to its size its only marked in 5 degree increments, but with a steady hand and decent eyesight you can narrow it down to 2.5 degrees (space between the dots). For those that don't know, 1 degree off-course over the distance of ONE mile is approx. 92 feet, so 2.5 degrees off is about 225 feet.

With all that being said, this IS NOT a primary compass for a beginner. In a life/death situation or search situation this is only a BACK-UP compass. Get a GOOD (usually meaning $75+) compass with 1 degree markings.

Lost the previous one due to my own negligence. Small, durable, effective tool. It stayed with me through everything I put it through; more than the average person would have. Worth purchasing again.

If you need a compass, bigger is best, but just how big can big be? Reason is, the aiming accuracy and capability gets better if you have a large stable platform and sight. OTAH, getting a wrist compass to do the same thing is difficult to achieve, and the M-9 meets this role well. With GPS being the principle guide these days to terrestrial navigation, compasses are mostly for backup and rough heading use, so best accuracy is less practical these days in lieu of compactness, ruggedness, and light weight. Underwater, the M-9 is as good as a dedicated SCUBA compass.

I've used an M-9 since 2001, and it finally died, the plastic case cracked, some liquid leaked, so a bubble that formed keeps the pointer from spinning freely.

This is my 3rd M-9, as I've bought two, keeping one as a spare. I use them both on surface and underwater to as deep as 260' ... although not rated as a diving compass, all fluid filled devices are non-compressible and should take great depths without issue. Diving capacity has been proven for the years I've owned this compass and others who use it similarly.

Pros
Very free spinning and accurate
Light weight
Rotating degree bezel
sighting capacity
transparent case, easy to check for defects
Usable underwater to depths at least to 260'
Velcro strap binds very well underwater

Cons
If not leveled during sighting, pointer will lock [fix: flick it with your finger, and a proper direction will not change much with movement]
Plastic case, will not last forever

Summary:
I've seen a number of compasses for field use in the middle of nowhere, and for so simple a device, its amazing so many are unreliable [whatever magnets they use don't hold its magnetism permanently], inaccurate markings, or poor construction. If you get lost because your compass doesn't work when you need it, its not worth any amount of money.

Suunto has made a name for itself in compasses, and what seems cheap looking is very well engineered, yet simple.

If you need a compass for general use, the watch mounted Clipper works best. I use those underwater too to 260', to backup the M-9.

I used this for hiking in the backcountry when cell service is iffy. I learned my lesson earlier this year when I got caught in a spring whiteout on snow shoes and the compass on my phone and trailmap app did't work correctly. So now I carry this on my wrist for back up. It is extremely light weight and you don't even notice you are wearing it after awhile. Good product.
