Rhubarb - Compatible Kelty Cosmic 20 Sleeping Bag

Rhubarb - Compatible Kelty Cosmic 20 Sleeping Bag
I purchased the womens Kelty Cosmic 20 Sleeping Bag and realized I did not have a compression stuff sack included. I was shocked because of how much it cost but it is what it is. I purchased the medium size which is the color Rhubarb. The sizes are color coordinated hopefully this helps you if you get confused which one to buy. It fit nicely and I did not have any issues with it. Over all I am happy with. Going on my first backpacking trip with this sack and hoping it will last through. I noticed people wrote bad reviews of it ripping but I think they most likely bought the wrong size and over stuffed it. Thanks Kelty!

Before I write my reviews, I typically use the product I purchased for an extended period of time before commenting on the function for which it was made. First, I'd like to say that I travel a lot for various purposes. When I travel, I like to have a durable and functional number of things with me for when the occasion arises. That being said, price still plays a huge factor in my decision making process, but I never hesitate to pay a bit more for something more durable. As you may have assumed, I am extremely rough with my stuff because in fast-moving situations, you have no time to be gentle with your belongings. It needs to be reliable.

I bought this compression stuff sack in April of 2016. I bought it for the purpose of using it as my laundry bag on a 3-week mountain expedition. I was particularly attracted to this because of it's size (I bought the juniper green, size large), and the fact that it was compressible. If you do any sort of hiking or explorations, you'll realize that weight and the amount of stuff you carry with you is extremely important. You are constantly limited by the amount of space you have and how much you can take with you. Having a compressible sack like this saves a lot of space for when you have dirty clothes. All you do is fill it with your stuff, clip with cables together, and compress the straps. When the bag is filled with dirty clothes, it compresses to the size a big bigger than a football.

Overall, since I bought this in April of 2016, I've used this on a lot of international travel. It takes up no space (lay it flat on the bottom of your suitcase), and is durable. there is also a convenient handle on the top of it so you can pick it up by that. I've had no problems with it, and I foresee using it for my upcoming adventures in the months and years to come. I highly recommend this stuff sack and it will make a HUGE difference in helping your organization and separating your dirty clothes from the clean clothes. It will be dependable for the times that you need it most.

Has an attached stuff pocket for storage which is also the lid of the compression, it's square and smaller than the cylinder dimension of hte sack. Not much heavier, but thicker fabric than OR or Aegis sacks. Still within an ounce of those others. I'd call this medium duty. Thicker than the Aegis, but less sturdy than the thinner, overbuilt OR sacks. The Juniper, Large is an excellent fit for a women's regular North Face Furnace 5 degree 550 fill down bag. This sleeping bag is 'high volume' for a down bag (ie, lots of down). The Aegis 30L sack was too big (correct size uncompressed, but couldn't compress the sleeping bag fully), and the OR 20l was too small (hard to stuff the bag initially, but doable with some work, but left lots of compression distance in the straps).

The way the two quick release buckles attach to the compression lid is really well done, it makes releasing the bag from compression super straight forward. I like that there are four straps instead of three (Aegis).

So it's a little big for my Kelty down sleeping bag, but the gold one which I also purchased is too small. So I guess a little big is okay, you just cinch it down more.

Seems pretty durable so far.

On thing that bugs me is in the picture it shows it like a perfect cylinder. Well in reality, when it is full of some bulky sleeping bag that isn't a perfect cylinder it does not look like that. That is because the top flap that you fold over with the strap that you attach to the bottom, it is smaller than the diameter of the bag. So the sleeping bag kinda pokes out from the sides at the top. I have seen others where the top flap is shaped like a lid on a jar and it folds over and encompasses the bag to prevent that. This is more style points, because it still compresses pretty well, seems well made. So 4 instead of 5 stars.

I'm really giving it 4.5 stars due to one small issue that is easily solvable. The draw string clamp doesn't quite hold the string strongly enough to keep it from sliding. As I pulled the compression straps the corners of the sack opened up from under the top flap and the sleeping bag inside started to peak out. However, using the clamp and then tying a bow in the string just above the clamp keeps the sack firmly closed. Very simple. Very secure and it easily opens.

The bag is made of tough durable rip-stop nylon and the strap buckles are hard plastic. It has good sturdy well stitched seams. This should easily last for a number of years. In the large sack I was able to snugly fit the Kelty Cosmic Down 0 degree/EN 4 sleeping bag (I HIGHLY recommend this sleeping bag as well). They're a perfect match. I was able to get the sack to compress the sleeping bag to about half of its original stuff size with no problem what so ever.

This is a well made, sturdy and functional compression sack. I highly recommend it especially for the price.

I originally bought a compression sack from a large outdoors store before finding this product line on amazon for much less. I decided to buy one of these as well and after comparing both, returned the first one and bought one of each size of the Kelty sacks. I really liked how two of the straps have the quick release buckles, allowing you to get the lid out of the way while packing the sack, then reconnecting to cinch it down.

The green sack is large enough to fit my 30-degree mummy bag. I can leave it loose for storage and not have to worry about compressing the insulation when not in use, and can still cinch it down tight enough so that it takes up much less space in backpack.

The blue sack is perfect for stuffing with clothes for longer camps and likewise cinching it down to fit in the pack. Once we setup camp, I can un-cinch it and pull clothes out as needed.

The smallest orange sack works great for a pillow or sweatshirts, etc. that take up lots of space, but can be compressed to a very small size.

All in all, I've very happy that I found this line of compression sacks from Kelty. I have a full set and imagine I'll be buying another set in a couple of years, not for myself, but for my son to use in his own pack.

Bag does everything it’s supposed to, sturdy and very water resistant. Only reason I gave it a four and not a 5 star was that the end that buckles up the flap is kinda small so when you start compressing your bag the it puffs out from either side of the flap because it’s smaller then the diameter of the whole bag
