Product Description

Rated "Best Buy" by a leading consumer publication and covered by Hitachi's Lifetime Lithium Ion tool warranty, the DS18DSAL is the first in Hitachi's Compact Professional series featuring an 18V Lithium Ion slide battery. It is impressively lightweight and compact at 7.7" in length and weighing only 3.3lbs. The DS18DSAL is the ideal driver drill for anyone seeking professional power in the most compact, lightweight and ergonomic tool body on the market.

Amazon.com

Powered by a long-lasting 1.5Ah lithium ion slide battery, the Hitachi DS18DSAL 18-Volt Compact Pro Lithium Ion Drill/Driver packs a powerful punch. Efficient and easy to handle, this variable-speed tool provides professional power in the most compact, lightweight, and ergonomically designed body currently available. For added convenience, it comes with Hitachi's UB18DAL Lithium Ion Flashlight.

Compact Design Minimizes User Fatigue Without Sacrificing Performance
The first in Hitachi's compact Pro Series of cordless tools, the DS18DSALmeasures only 7.7 inches in length and weighs 3.5 pounds, making it easy to hold and use all day without stress or strain. The compact design also provides the power and performance of a pro-grade 18-volt tool, making operation as efficient and dependable as it is comfortable.

Variable Speed and 22-Stage Clutch for Versatility
This impressive driver drill features a variable speed trigger to set speed from zero to 350 RPM or zero to 1,500 RPM so you always match the right speed to the job. Additionally, the clutch has 22 driving stages and a special mode for drilling, allowing for both high torque applications and precision driving.

First-in-its-Class Torque for Heavy-Duty Jobs
With unmatched torque in its class, the DS18DSAL powers through even the toughest jobs. 460 in./lbs. of torque gives this easy-to-handle model the necessary boost to take on hardwoods, masonry, and other heavy-duty drilling.

Belt Hook, LED Light, and 1/2-Inch Ratcheting Chuck for User-Friendly Operation
The DS18DSAL comes with a convenient metal belt hook and an LED job light to illuminate your work surface. It also features a keyless 1/2-inch ratcheting metal chuck that accepts a wide variety of bits, giving you greater flexibility. Finally, externally accessible carbon brushes allow you to easily and economically replace the brushes when they are worn, thus ensuring longer tool life.

Lightweight 1.5 Ah Lithium Ion Slide Battery for Long-Lasting Power
This driver drill is powered by a long-lasting 1.5 Ah lithium ion slide battery. Designed without the vertical chamber of a post-style battery, this battery glides easily into place and allows the DS18DSAL to have an ergonomic handle. And because this Lithium Ion battery weighs roughly half as much as a NiCd or NiMH battery, you can work longer, with better accuracy.

Steady Stream of Power for Precision and Consistency
As with all of Hitachi's lithium ion batteries, the tool receives a steady stream of power for the duration of every battery charge, from the moment the trigger is pulled until the charge cycle is exhausted. And with up to three times the number of charge cycles of traditional batteries, you won't have to waste money on costly replacements.

Included Lithium Ion Flashlight for Added Flexibility
As a bonus, the DS18DSAL comes with Hitachi's UB18DAL Lithium Ion Flashlight. Adjustable to five lighting positions, this flashlight stands alone while you work and can be aimed where you need illumination. A shoulder strap makes for easy, comfortable carrying, and a low-battery indicator light helps ensure that you don't run out of power mid-use. And because the UB18DAL runs on the same 18-volt slide batteries as the driver drill, it shares the same lithium ion benefits of long battery life, lasting power per charge, and lightweight convenience.

Warranty Information
For even more value and peace of mind, each of these tools is covered by Hitachi's 10-year lithium ion tool warranty and two-year lithium ion battery warranty.

Loved it, - but WILL NOT purchase one again for my type of use.

Loved it, - but WILL NOT purchase one again for my type of use.
Would have given it a 5 star rating, because I love this cordless driver / drill. However, after owning it for just a few months I accidentally knocked it off the top of a 6 ft step ladder onto a 3/4" plywood sub-floor.My fault entirely, no doubt there. But because of the heavy weight of the drill motor on the top and heavy weight of the battery on the bottom the 6 ft drop was too much shock for the narrowest part of the hand hold, just above the battery. It snapped off and left only wires holding the top part to the battery part.Worse yet, it was in a particularly bad area to try to fasten the two parts together. Super glue did not hold at all, (overnight curing with a large black rubber-band holding the joint tightly together) wouldn't stick to the plastic at all.Two part Gorilla Epoxy did stick a little to the plastic (again after overnight curing with a large black rubber-band holding the joint tightly together) , but it yielded only a very weak repair. Five minutes of gentle use and the repaired joint broke apart again. This weak area of the hand hold should be made stronger, I have dropped other cordless drills over the years, but this was the first that broke at the hand-hold narrowest point. This would definitely be a great cordless drill for around the house fix-it chores. It is somewhat expensive for that type of use only. However, I don't think it is strong enough for professional use. That is why I rated it as 3 stars.

I bought this to replace my trusty old DeWalt drill that got stolen recently. Having had mixed experience with batteries on cordless devlces, I was concerned about whether this would have enough power. I was also worried about the added weight of the battery in a hand-held device like this. Happy to say i think this is actually lighter than my old corded drill, and it is certainly easier to maneuver. No more lugging extension cords around or trying to find an outlet near by. It holds a charge for a long time. It has lots of power too, but is easier to control the torque, so I don't strip as many screws as I used to. That's good since these days everything seems to come with cheap screws that must be made of silver-colored sawdust. I've only had the Hitachi for a couple months, so don't know how the battery life will be, but so far I am loving this thing. Starting to wish someone had stolen my old DeWalt years ago! I am even using the goofy light that came with it. I thought it would be useless, but it actually comes in pretty handy.

I have only one complaint, and it is about the case. It comes with a nice, sturdy plastic carrying case that holds the drill with battery attached, light, extra battery and charger. But that's it. I can't fit my little plastic case of drill bits in there anywhere, and it is annoying to have to store that separately and remember to grab it when I'm heading off to fix something. It is also annoying that I have to remove the second battery from the light to fit it in the case, but that's not a big deal. There is a lot of extra space in the case, but it is carved up with plastic divider/support pieces so it is impossible to use that space to store anything. I may try to modify it so I can at least fit the pack of bits in there. If the case was more functional, this would be a perfect combo.

This is an excellent cordless drill!
It was recommended by a well know consumer magazine, and I agree.
Some of the key features are;
2 speed, variable, reversible, trigger activated work light, locking chuck for quick bit changes, multiple clutch settings for soft work, belt clip.
Also included are; the battery charger, two batteries, a job site lamp, instructions, and the carrying case.
Some well thought out safety features are; motor overload protection, battery overheat protection, battery undercharge protection.

I used it heavily right out of the box, all day, multiple battery chargings. Very satisfied!
The most noticeable things were the very strong motor, light weight, long battery life, and excellent balance.

This is also a very well built tool. Every feature is solidly built and functions perfectly.
For example:
1) The variable speed trigger is solid and gives a smooth range for complete control.
2) The adjustable clutch has evenly spaced settings with accurate differences in resistance for precise screw depth.
3) The locking clutch stops immediately upon trigger release, and doesn't loosen during use.

This is a solid drill and well designed.
All the features are solid and work perfectly, and that's what makes this drill so exceptional.

Bought the drill to build a raised garden out of pressure treated wood. One thing I noticed, was in the 50 some reviews, no one really indicated the power of the drill, just what they like or would change. My only concern was can this thing screw into pressure treated wood. There was another Hitachi I was looking at, but again, wasn't sure if it could do pressure treated wood, so went with this one because it was stronger and lighter.

I first used the flashlight. Don't know why it gets such a bum rap. It's very nice and quite handy, and I can spot my black dog at the back of the yard, not too shabby. The major issue I had with it was that I was going to use it to illuminate my crawlspace, but I moved a bag of donation clothes and bumped the flashlight, and that slight bump from a bag of clothes, caused the bulb to blow :-( But, as long as you don't bump it, it's a wonderful thing!

Now, the drill. I was able to assemble a complete raised garden out of pressure treated wood with this thing. Took the torque of 22 to do it, but all but 1 screw, went right in, and that one could have hit a knot or something. And the drill's still working on the same battery, no need to charge yet. I also used it to hang a shade in the house and hang a valance, only took 11 torque for that, still going on the same battery charge. Very nicely balanced and not too heavy. My only complaint is that I'm used to Black and Decker, which has an arrow pointing away from the wall on one side, and an arrow pointing toward the wall on the other, that tell you which side to push to make it go the direction you want, nice, simple, easy, idiot proof. This one has left and right. I'm trying to remember lefty loosy, righty tighty...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Drill I've Ever Had
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2014
This drill is great. It's light, has great power, the variable speed trigger control allows you to easily control the speed of the chuck. It really is a great drill. I didn't think the light would be very useful but I've already been surprised that I ended up using it to provide light for some under counter and light switch work in my kitchen. It's flat base made for good stable light source when I was working. Normally I would have worn a headset light but light ended up being really useful. I'll admit my old cordless drill was really hold so that may be why I'm so amazed by this drill but I have to say I really am impressed. If you have an old cordless drill that needs replacing, I sincerely recommend this as a replacement. It's great.

Reviewed in Canada on December 31, 2012
Shipping from Amazon.ca surpassed expectations and predictions; I received this drill/flashlight in two days! I was delighted and full of anticipation to test these units out but to my dismay, I could not charge either of the two batteries because they would not accept a charge. I called Hitachi and they said to ship them back via Purolator on their account, so that is what I have done. What concerns me is that many others who have submitted product reviews have had the same experience. Shouldn't Hitachi figure out a solution to this problem?

The drill feels fantastic -- light, ergonomic and nice looking. The flashlight also looks like a good tool, though it does not use an LED lamp, which is unfortunate.

Update:
After a few weeks, Hitachi did send me back two or reconditioned batteries. The drill is an amazing piece of technology!
