Customers like the performance and smoke absorber of the fan. For example, they say it works well, does a decent job of pulling fumes away and is good value for money. That said, some complain about the smell and cord stiffness. They mention that the fan produces a terrible burning smell and that it's too inflexible.

Customers are mixed about the size of the tool. Some mention that it works great and is small enough to stay out of the way, while others say that it just seems to be small. The fan is not long, it's short and stubby, and the large stand makes that kind of difficult. The tolerances of the design are absurdly small, and there's a large exhaust hose that doesn't fit the fan. The wire is definitely bulky and a little stiff, but didn't bother them.

So with the negatives out of the way, the unit does 'suck'. It clears a reasonable area of my bench from fumes. You see the smoke get pulled in and magically disappear. Much better in the filter than in my lungs!
Overall, highly recommend. You don't need a fancy ventilation system to avoid breathing in solder fumes!
As with others, I was also finding the unit frustrating to get to play nicely on my desk, though amazingly I hadn't considered "this power cord is too stiff!" as the cause. Maybe this is because my workbench is a mess and the other cord in the same area was a very thick power cord, so I didn't think anything by comparison. Or, maybe my thinking was clouded by the weird chemicals coming from this unit! (I wrote that as a joke, but the more I think about it, the less funny it seems). Now that I have noticed the stuff cord, though, I'll likely rewire it.
That is, after I open it up and try to identify the cause of the stink. If I can't find one, I may run it outside for most of a day in hopes of it offgassing enough to be tolerable.
Otherwise, I can't really see using this. I'm trading particulate smoke from rosin for apparent denaturing or combustion products from plastic.
I was going to give this a 3, but the doesn't seem appropriate for a device I'm going to have to disassemble, diagnose, and rewire. Granted that's probably not a deal-breaker foot the intended users of this, but still.
This experience has been frustrating enough that I no longer feel any doubt about springing for the used Hakko FR-300 desoldering tool rather than the new Aoyue one for nearly $100 less. Fun fact? I got both of these and started using them at the same time. Given the Hakko is plastic and had chunks intentionally reaching 850F / 450C, I initially thought it was the culprit.
Imagine my surprise at discovering it was in fact the device intended to stop that very issue.
Buy it because it keeps your area clean from flux or lead that will coat your work space. If you work in orders it keeps you safe from breathing harmful vapors and others as well. And the smoke will not irritate your lungs or eyes. But your hands will still smell like metal.
