How Heart Rate Training Works

When you exercise, you don’t always have to go faster or harder to get the best results. To reach your goals you just need to workout within the right heart rate intensity zone.

During exercise, there are specific intensity zones, each with a benefit. These zones are based on a percentage of your maximum heart rate- a number calculated by most Polar heart rate monitors. While working out you can use your max heart rate to calculate and follow the recommended zones below. Training in the right zone will help you stay on track to reach your goals.

  • Zone 1 "Very Light" 50-60%: Improves overall health and helps recovery. Recommended for weight management and active recovery.
  • Zone 2 "Light" 60-70%: Improves basic endurance and fat burning. Recommended for everybody for longer and frequently repeated short exercises.
  • Zone 3 "Moderate" 70-80%: Improves aerobic fitness. Recommended for everybody for moderately long exercises.
  • Zone 4 "Hard" 80-90%: Increases maximum performance capacity. Recommended for everybody for shorter exercises.
  • Zone 5 "Maximum" 90-100%: Develops maximum performance and speed. Recommended for fit people and athletic training.

Simple and functional - Truly got my money's worth since the time I bought it
I bought my set in April 2015 and I have use it as my primary watch about 95% of the time ever since because it's very useful in other many ways aside from telling the time. The watch unit is still functioning well except for the small rubber clasp that broke - that secures the other end of the strap - last month. I just use a black rubber band as a replacement. The backlighting is not that great but I rarely use it anyway.Aside from that, I had replaced the battery (CR1632) of the watch unit just once and had yet to replace the battery of the HR sensor unit.I use the HR sensor unit about 2-3 times a week when I ride my bike and each time, before use, I clean it - the rubberized area under the sensor- with 91% isopropyl alcohol (but any grade would be probably OK) before applying a small dab of Spectra electrode gel.I rarely get an error message ('transmitter error') on the unit since I used the electrode gel.The band on the HR sensor unit is very much in good shape - no noticeable sag nor wrinkling on the edges - even after those months, perspiration and all. Most elasticized bands sag just after several uses but this one is really durable and good quality.I also clean the watch unit - specially the underside - and well as the straps with a piece of tissue paper dabbed with isopropyl alcohol when my wrist start to itch to remove the buildup of grime. However, I didn't suffer any allergic reactions to the strap --- just the usual skins marks since I rarely take off the unit off my wrist. It's truly waterproof (the watch unit) and I had used it in both salt and fresh water environments although the most I have been under water was probably 15 feet. I had never tried using the HR sensor unit under water if it's also waterproof, though. For the price I paid - about $74 (tax inclusive), I believe I had gotten my money's worth and that's the bottom line. It's not fancy and have no snob-appeal, but it just works.mid-Aug. 2017 update:I am really impressed with the quality of the HR monitor band. It had been almost 2 1/2 years of constant use (primarily while riding my bike, 2-3 times a week) and looks like it just had very minimal wear. No visible sagging nor discoloration in spite of body salt, grime, etc.. I have yet to replace the battery of the HR monitor.I had replaced the watch strap - also bought off Amazon - with a $8 replacement (although it was narrower -woman's/ladies-version) sometime Nov 2016 and had just replaced the watch battery (CR 1632) this month --just the 2nd time since I purchased the unit in April 2015.I am really impressed with this Polar FT7 watch which I decided over the first version of the Apple Watch. Eventually, my decision to go with this Polar was not to have a fitness watch that I will need to charge , at least, every other day. The FT7's battery is so easy to replace. Not only the decision saved me a lot of money, the product is still very, very useful as of this review update!
