How Heart Rate Training Works
When you exercise, you don’t always have to go faster or harder to get the best results. To reach your goals you just need to workout within the right heart rate intensity zone.
During exercise, there are specific intensity zones, each with a benefit. These zones are based on a percentage of your maximum heart rate- a number calculated by most Polar heart rate monitors. While working out you can use your max heart rate to calculate and follow the recommended zones below. Training in the right zone will help you stay on track to reach your goals.
- Zone 1 "Very Light" 50-60%: Improves overall health and helps recovery. Recommended for weight management and active recovery.
- Zone 2 "Light" 60-70%: Improves basic endurance and fat burning. Recommended for everybody for longer and frequently repeated short exercises.
- Zone 3 "Moderate" 70-80%: Improves aerobic fitness. Recommended for everybody for moderately long exercises.
- Zone 4 "Hard" 80-90%: Increases maximum performance capacity. Recommended for everybody for shorter exercises.
- Zone 5 "Maximum" 90-100%: Develops maximum performance and speed. Recommended for fit people and athletic training.

Cons
1. The chest strap, although comfortable, will get stinky. I now wash mine and hang dry after every workout.
2. If you are a guy with a hairy chest, plan on trimming to make a heartrate monitor work correctly (there is a reason they do so at the hospital when performing an EKG).
3. I found that applying some electrode gel to the sensors (which is really cheap by the way) helps obtain accurate early readings.
4. I am a 200 lb guy, and sweat copiously during a workout. I found that I needed to towel off above the chest strap when I got really soaking wet to keep the monitor working correctly. When I say "copiously", I mean "copiously". But once I figured this out, all problems solved.
5. The watch face is just a tad small. In darker situations, you need to turn your wrist just right to be able to check the monitor.
6. I found that about every 3rd plyometric workout, I needed to retighten the chest strap. Not a big deal, fairly easy adjustment. After a while, I became so used to the strap that I could immediately tell if it was tight enough.
Pros
1. Great piece of gear that does everything advertised. Heck, there are functions that I haven't even used yet.
2. I really like being able to check my heart rate during a workout. As many of you know, some of the plyometric workouts can be crushers. This piece of gear allows you to keep the intensity up, by being able to instantly know how hard you are working (as opposed to some metaphysical pain sense). Importantly, this monitor is tough enough and accurate enough to hang with really hard workouts, and has not broken, chipped, failed to start, etc., for 6 months of everyday tough use.
3. I also enjoyed knowing an almost exact number of calories burned, especially for tweaking my diet.
4. Being able to input personal data makes the calorie counts and heart rate zones much more accurate and beneficial.
5. The ability to go to a local store and buy replacement batteries is a really big selling point. The battery access ports are big, easy to find, and easy to operate.
Overall, I like this monitor so well that I use it for every workout. Moreover, I'm buying my secretary one.
While working in my gym I have noticed that the many of the aerobic machines will pick up the signal from the monitor. The heart rate display on the FT7 watch and the heart rate display on the equipment have been always within with in a beat or two of the watch. It was good to see this validated
The watch stores up to 90 data points. It is very easy to recall data for comparison. I opted not to buy the upload link. The upload link allows you to upload data directly from the watch to the polar website. Instead I am saving the 40$ and manually inputting the data on an Excel worksheet and using JMP statistics to analyze the data.
I am using the data for many things. After 15 workouts I have determined that I can get just as good a workout with the rower and upright bike as I can with a run of the same lapsed time. This will give me confidence to work in more low impact activities to save my body and yet still attain the same heat rate and calorie burn.
The instructions say to detach the monitor from the strap and wash through the wash in a wash bag every 5 exercises. Instead I have been hand washing after nearly every exercize.
The buckle on my strap digs into the side of my back and it has irritated the skin a little. That is really my only complaint. Also, If I were to purchase again, I would upgrade to a model with a GPS because I like to walk and run outside. Although, for the money I paid on Cyber Monday of 67$ made this watch a steal.
Update: If you leave your monitor and watch in your car during very cold days in the middle of winter, I have noticed that the watch may give some obviously erroneous heart rate readings until the unit warms up.
Update #2 - After 2.5 years and 2 batteries, this watch still works. In fact I went to a fitbit several months ago but I tried this watch out again after it sitting in my gym bag for several months in my car and it still works flawlessly.
Top reviews from other countries
1. The sensor is comfortable and works exceptionally well even when cycling and vigorous exercise. Its very easy to change the battery and only had a signal drop when the battery began to run out after lots and lots of use. Easily brought a new one from Sainsburies standard 3v button battery and even easier to fit.
2, The menus are easy to navigate and the watch has all the functions I need with easy and concise data display.
3. The training files are stored on the watch and provide a complete history of training stats easily accessible whenever needed.
There was a wide range of products available and a wider range of prices but for someone who wants a good, well featured, reliable device to provide that essential fun element of gadgetry to drive you to a fitter life, then this is a great choice.
Pretty sure I haven't used all the features yet and I think there is a web thingy as well, but so far I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
