Update: 19 Mar 2020. This is just as good as the Bach 42BO it is copied from. Here is the trick to the slide: it comes with a slide rod. Use slide creme in very, very tiny amounts on the stockings. Wipe it off. Put the slide together and work the slide. Wrap the rod in gauze and work it in and out of the outer slide lots and lots of times. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. You have to really clean the inside of the outer slide. It now plays like a $2500.00 trombone.
Original review of 4 stars: Ive been playing the trombone for 40 years. I played a Bundy in junior high, and talked my parents into getting me a double independent Yamaha bass trombone in highschool. As a music Major in college, these two horns were wonderful. The Bundy finally wore out and in 2001 I bought a Martin Urbie Green, by selling the bass trombone. Now I am missing the low notes, so I bought this Mendini. It's a pretty good copy of a Bach 42BO. It's lighter than the Bach, slide is fine, rotor is a touch noisy, petal Bb sounds fine, low Bb is sharp, middle Bb is flat. Overall, for less than $400 I am extremely pleased. I only play in my local community band now so this is plenty of trombone for me. One brace in the main tuning slide has a little bit of solder that wasn't brushed off. This horn will not suffice for a college music Major, or a serious highschooler who needs to post high on recitals, but if you just play for the fun of it, buy this horn. Large bore, open wrap f-attachment, slide is a little heavy, mouthpiece is large shank, standard shape.
The case was a great surprise, not hanging strings or cheesy zippers, it has rubber feet on the long side and the larger horn end (so it stands solid & won't topple over on its own). The case is made of very heavy canvas with double zippers, and extra snap enclosure to cover zippers when closed under the carry handle. Actually it has several handles to carry in different ways. the inside is custom fit for the horn with 2 protected door compartments for extra gadgets, and one larger rectangle zipper on the outside for music. The lining I expected to be a very inexpensive lining, but it is really very nice, thicker well made velvet like material. The 2 pcs. of the horn are in thin protective dust covers, and the overall presentation is quite lovely and everything seems of great quality.
If you are looking for a young student, do not hesitate, this is the one for you! So pleased I did not buy a used one. Do look here on Amazon and buy the bow protector as well, it fits this unit perfectly & will protect the end that I'm sure the kids will rest on the floor while waiting for there part to play.
First off, we were happy that it arrived so quickly. The school band had no more instruments to rent out, and used instruments are hard to find at a decent price around here. The price of this instrument is extremely reasonable, and allows us the leeway to buy a better instrument in later years, should our child stick with it.
All the items listed came with the product. I was impressed with the case, which is indeed a hard case with a soft outer cover. My child is small for a 6th grader but will have no problems carrying this back and forth every day. I'm a little worried that her arms will be long enough to reach the furthest positions on the slide, but I wonder if they will even have to do much of those positions in 6th grade band!
The tuner is a cool little device, and a kid can learn to use that on their own quite easily. The little booklet that comes with it has a lot of great info and isn't difficult to understand. The slide grease that comes with it is good but I would recommend getting the silicone spray that is suggested as a "buy with" purchase.
The thing that grossed me out and caused me to take off a star was the little orange cleaning cloth that came with it. It was neatly folded inside a zip-sealed bag, but when I opened it, I could smell a strong odor of cleaning oil. I could also see signs of pilling and wear along the edges. When I opened it up completely, on the side the was folded inward was a black stain from having been used previously to clean an instrument, and that whole side was worn and had little balled-up pills all over it. I can only think that either the instrument or the case was previously used and returned, and no one ever checked the cloth because it was so neatly folded and put in the re-sealed bag.
I'm sad that something, whether the instrument or the case or the entire thing, is not brand new as advertised. I would have been fine paying a discounted price for a used instrument had I been informed of that prior to purchase. But finding out in this way that something isn't quite as it seems just makes me feel swindled. Perhaps the buyer who returned the item is the one who did the swindling, I don't know, but either way, I would want to know if I were buying returned merchandise.
We are making do with what we got because my child already missed the first week of having an instrument for band and we can't wait longer for another instrument. Obviously the condition of cloth itself doesn't make a difference to the horn's ability to play. From visual inspection we see no signs of damage or wear, so we will hope for the best.
For any other parents buying a trombone, you will also need a cleaning snake. We didn't know that, so just a heads-up. If anyone knows differently, please let us know in the comments if there are alternative ways to cleaning besides a snake. Thanks!
