How to improve this bike's safety and function.
4 Stars
How to improve this bike's safety and function.
Some reviews indicate some people consider the bike "wobbly". This seems conflated a little bit with flimsy. If you have normal balance, the bike does seem to threaten to potentially tilt over when operating it at high speed. That's kinda marginal in relation to safety, hence this one-time review of a product. Since a very old person was going to be using the bike, normal balance wasn't expected, so the bike wasn't good enough, yet. This is what we did to fix it.In the image you see a 2x4 that is 3 feet long, lying horizontally across the floor, upon which rests the front stabilizing bar of the bike, with the wheel exactly at the center of the 2x4. Duct tape tightly wraps the horizontal bar and the 2x4 in 4 places. Around each wrap is a 75lb-test zip tie that is 14 inches long, wrapped as tight as possible. The same setup exists at the rear of the bike. Now, when operated at any speed, it requires active and forceful horseplay to get the bike to do anything but stay put, though it might slide on a rug if that's what you want it to do.Not so important for most people, however, in the image, you see a raised 2x4 running front to back. Since the pedal throw isn't so long, the seat should be set a little higher so the legs stretch out. The very old person had a fair amount of difficulty getting up onto the seat, and needed assistance. Not good enough, but most people won't have this difficulty. The 2x4 running front to back is also 3 feet long, exactly. Supporting it at the front and back are three 3.5x3.5 inch cuts or squares of 2x4. So the top of the step is 7 and a half inches above the floor. The squares, and the boards at the top and bottom, were clamped and glued together. When the clamps were removed, we forgot about the bike until we realized the very old person had been using it for several minutes. So now it's easy to get up onto the seat. Note that the squares are snug against the stabilizer bar at the front and back. This allowed adequate clearance for the pedal. Its the too-short stabilizer bars at the front and back that I think results in user wariness. I don't think the bike is flimsy. I think it's simple. Of course it will wear out, but if you don't push it like you're an athlete every day, I think it will last as long as something that costs $124+ should last. My guess is it will last at least a year with moderate use. The bike seems to be what a lot of people say about it. A good entry level bike. Good advice from a reviewer who suggested loctite for the bolts. Follow the usual rules for tightening nuts, don't overtighten. The instructions are pretty good. All the parts are organized and labeled for you. A cheap but working wrench is provided. However, any regular adjustable wrench, or basic set of metric wrenches, is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic exercise bike.
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2015
February 2015. An excellent basic exercise bike. I had used this exercise bike when visiting in New Orleans, so when my ten-year old Vitamaster exercise bike died (broken seat, replacement parts no longer available), it was an easy choice to buy this exercise bike. Assembly took about thirty minutes, although if I had to assemble another one of these it would take half that time. Well-packaged in its shipping box, and the instructions were easy enough to follow. Having the various screws and bolts in a card-mounted blister pack, plus the necessary tools (multi-size spanner wrench plus two hex wrenches) was an unexpected bonus. Two hex wrenches are needed for assembling the main rocker arm shaft.

I am full 6' feet but found this exercise bike to fit fine, although I did have to place the seat post at its highest available position. I like the foot rests; you can use then with or without the foot holders.

I particularly like the adjustable friction strap, which gives you analog adjustment. The digital read out works fine, and is sufficiently large to be easily readable while sitting on the exercise bike.

Buy the supplemental padded seat, though. The O.E.M. seat is indeed hard, which I confirmed while adjusting the seat height, before adding the fortunately also purchased Schwinn padded seat.

All in all, and excellent price for a basic exercise bike, which is all I was interested in.

April 2017 update: It's two years later and the tensioner belt finally wore out. New tensioner belt available from the manufacturer for $22, but installation of replacement belt more difficult than it should be due to need to transfer keeper clip spring from old belt to new belt. For $22, the replacement tensioner belt should come with its own, captive, clip spring. See photos. Still rate this as an excellent exercise bike, though.

Further feedback: Body Rider Sports called me and offered to send an extra clip spring free of charge. They explained that you have to order a spring clip along with a new tensioner belt, if that's what you want. But for a customer replacing the tensioner belt for the first time, you wouldn't know that. Also, if these are sent as separate parts, you will still need a vice and needle nose pliers to open bend the eye hook end and then re-bend the eye hook close after the tensioner belt has been inserted. Not every customer is likely to have access to a vice and needle nose pliers. Really, any order for a replacement tensioner belt should come with the belt having an already attached captive retainer spring. But kudos to Body Flex Sports for having a Customer Service department that lives up to the name.
