Much to my delight, this phone has FAR exceeded my expectations! My son now has learned to count from 0 to 10 just from playing with this phone! He can sit for long periods of time and play with this phone. He even insists on sleeping with it now! It has a wonderful song button which has several educational, catchy tunes on it. There is another button that makes the phone sound like it is ringing and the little dog character talks as though he is on the phone. Each number button says its number and then gives an example like, "let's count five flowers" and the voice counts along with cute graphics. Seriously, my son only knew the number 9 before getting this phone, and within a week he could count with the phone! It is amazing. Also, when we go places and I want him to be entertained with a toy, this is the best toy he owns. It entertains him for long periods of time, and he does seem to think it is a real phone, or at least resembles a real phone enough to satisfy him.
I highly recommend this phone to anyone with a toddler. It is one of the best toys I've ever bought for my son. I love that it is both educational AND fun!
Actually, all kidding aside, the phone is nice. Each button makes a noise, and the number pressed shows up on the screen. Scout says the number, and counts that number of a particular item (shoes, flowers, puppy biscuits, etc.). Sometimes Scout comes on and sings a song. Overall, my daughter does actually like it, and it keeps her entertained for short periods at home and longer periods in the car when she can't drop it and move on to something else. There are two volume settings (in addition to off) on the side, which was a nice feature until she learned how to move that switch herself. Now, it's either off of on high (low is in the middle, which she NEVER stops at!). It's a good size. It was a tiny bit big for her to hold with one hand when she first got it at 10 months old, but she could hold it with both hands without a problem. It's been 4 months and she can now hold it up to her ear with one hand. It has survived being dropped constantly, and still works like it did on day 1. We have not had to change the batteries yet either.
The reason I'm taking my rating down 1 star is because of the screen. The screen is plastic, and it was scratched up immediately from being dropped and pushed around on the floor. I wouldn't expect it to stay perfect with a toddler, but more than an hour would have been nice. Also, the animations are only in black and the screen itself is somewhat dark and doesn't light up, so it is a little hard to see unless you're in direct light. However, you really can't expect much better or different given that it's built for kids, and is relatively inexpensive. And she still likes it and plays with it, so I can't ask for much more. I would have no reservations about buying this again or giving one as a gift.

When I came across this one I finally thought, this is the one!
And it certainly is… but in a way.
First of all I must add that although the manufacturer recommended age is 18 months to 3 years, my son was 4 when he asked for it.
My son is a fan of Leapfrog toys and I have found they are all very educating.
With this said I must add this is not much of a play phone.
Kids cannot pretend to dial or call, as what my son wanted to do.
For a little child… then I guess yes. The call and response action of talking to Scout the dog must be fun. But for a 4 year old it was only fun first time around.
This toy is more like an activity toy to learn numbers and counting.
My son had speech difficulties, so toys as this one do encourage him to talk.
My son loved the fact that the screen lights up.
The size is a bit on the big size, but for little hands its ideal.
It's a tough toy so do not worry if your child drops it.
I have read that other customers don’t like the volume on the toy… I personally find there is nothing wrong with it.
Leapfrog toys are made and specifically designed for our little ones.
The volume is set to the correct volume for our little treasures to put them close to their ears… I personally would not do anything to raise the volume at all.
This toy will give your child endless hours of fun and wen the batteries go my son will still pretend play with his phone.
Would I buy this item again?
Yes
In case like me and my mini man, you like leapfrog toys too, I will now add the link to a few which my son has and I can personally recommend you that your child will love.

I hope my review has been helpful to you, thanks for reading.
The educational design is good. Each digit key plays a short sequence which speaks the number, includes a gap for the child to repeat the number, then goes of into a short animation with music to illustrate it (different for each number). It is important that the music/animation doesn't go on too long, to encourage the child to press another button. The music button plays a short tune at random out of maybe 8 that it knows. Sometimes at random it will 'call' the child. If the child learns to press the green 'phone' button, then Scout will have a short conversation with the child about meeting up to play or whatever. If the child presses the 'phone' button at other times Scout will also have a conversation. Some of these conversations are about numbers, and invite the child to count with Scout up to a certain number, i.e. for a more advanced child, they exercise what the child learnt with the plain digit keys.
All in all, I think there is plenty of variety and our child is not bored with it yet, nor has he completely figured it all out yet. Obviously it is not a real mobile (i.e. it doesn't make real calls on the network!), it is a toy mobile for children to talk to Scout -- it looks enough like a mobile to children for them to accept it instead of a mobile, whilst at the same time sneaking in some counting and number learning exercises. We're very happy with the purchase.
(Do make sure you leave in the plastic tab by the battery compartment, though, so that the volume is high enough -- as mentioned in other people's reviews.)
