Edit: Contact Everlast with the issue and they sent me a new one.
I very rarely give 5 out of 5 for anything, so 4 means something is very good. No problems with it so far.
I bought this because I hate regular workouts and wanted something a little different to get me interested. Also, I'm a big boxing fan so this appealed to me.
I planned on using it indoors, so I purchased the Everlast Double End/Heavy Bag Anchor to go with it - I highly recommend getting this combo if you're using it in an area in which you cannot drill into the floor.
Upper bungee fastened to 2 eye hooks mounted into a ceiling beam and lower bungee fastened to the aforementioned anchor containing a 40lb bag of sand and you're good to go.
The bag hangs at the right height for most (right around shoulder/neck level). I'm tall, so it puts it slightly above chest level for me, but that's ok as I box in a stooped crouch like Rocky Marciano.
I'd never used a double end bag before and it was, and still is, fun to get used to. Starting with just a jab it's pretty easy to get the rhythm and timing right. I switched orthodox to southpaw just jabbing initially. Then bringing in the 1-2 of jab, cross. A little tougher but you slowly get used to timing and speed of your punch. I've worked up to being pretty good with 3 and 4 punch combos, bringing in hooks and an occasional uppercut. I still have wild swings where I hit nothing but air and am left with egg on my face, but they're fewer and farther between.
The keys are making sure you move. The bag swings all directions and instead of putting a hand out to stop it, circle it to time it's swings and movements. Don't use too much power. The bag is about timing and precision. If you use too much power you'll destroy the bag, the bungee chords and if you don't have it mounted correctly rip a hole in your ceiling.
I use the bag in intervals. Rather than strict 3 minute rounds I pick a song that's got a good rhythm and pace to it, box the entire song then 30 seconds to a minute to cycle to another song and repeat. 15-30 minutes and you'll be breathing heavy and have worked up a good sweat. This may not be something everyone can do, but I like to switch-hit with the bag. On one side of the bag I use and orthodox stance for all punches then if I circle to the other side I switch to southpaw. I feel this will give a more even work out and it actually happened by mistake the first time as I found myself naturally switching stance as I circled.
Its not the level quality they have at gyms. But i kmock this thing around pretty good bare fisted (not recommended) cuz im too lazy to wrap hands but the point is- this bag can handle it.
So glad i ordered this, ill definitely another one if it ever falls apart or pops.
Cons: First, it was hard to get air to go into it. I finally had to hold the needle in it real tight with my left hand, while trying to pump air with the other hand. Second, both of the elastic chords are the same length which puts the ball at about stomach height. I ended up changing to my old chords to get the right measurements. Then there is the zipper tab, the zipper was a good idea, but the tab tends to jingle while you are punching which is very annoying. I finally put duct tape over the zipper to keep it quiet. Lastly, the seams are on the outside which can tear your hands up if you punch without gloves. You won't feel them with the gloves on. The size of the ball is also about 8 inches which is smaller than the balls I have owned previously, but I am getting used to that.
