Olive Update *********
Well, after less than a year at work pitting olives and occasionally cherries, the inner rubbery piece cracked, allowing unpitted olives to push through, then totally gave up the ghost and pushed through itself with an olive being pitted. Everything about this device impressed me, including it's operation as both olive and cherry pitter. It turned out to be stupid old reliability that wasn't up to scratch. Over the time limit for a painless return, too. Rats - thought for a while I had a dual solution, but it looks like it's back to the marketplace for a second try. Arrrgh!
Replacement Update ***********
Shortly after my Arrrhg! related to returning, I read somewhere that the pitter (and all other Cuisipro devices) have a lifetime guarantee/warranty. I looked up their number on the internet, called them up, and arranged with the customer service person to have a replacement shipped to my address (at no cost). It arrived in due time, and seems to work just fine. I'm guessing that somewhere they're redesigning that collar that broke, but for now I'm happy at my specific outcome, though it would have been nice to avoid the trip in the first place. The olive people are coming for Thanksgiving, so it will get another workout and I'll report if things go other than totally OK.
Helpful Hint: Always refrigerate cherries prior to pitting. This will both preserve and keep them firm so they don't get mangled and loose so much juice in the process (especially necessary for sours, which are a lot softer than the sweets). And don't forget the FruitFresh, so that they don't turn brown.
