Endura 4 Lightweight

CRAFTED FOR LIFE

If you already own a Delica or Endura, you have one of signature knives Spyderco makes. The knife you have just acquired is a bit different from the normal C10 Endura 4 and C11 Delica 4 Lightweights. They are now available in a range of new handle colors with full-flat ground blades. Their FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handles come in new vibrant tones including blue, green, brown, gray, and purple. Molded onto the handle's surface is Bi-Directional Texturing for slip-free tactile traction. Inside the handle are dual skeletonized stainless steel liners which strengthen the knife without additional weight and double as an anchor for external and internal components to attach through generating more sturdiness and rigidity.

The blades are full flat-ground VG-10 with a thinner highly refined cutting edge and a larger 13mm opening hole. Added to the blade's spine is slip resistant jimping. Phosphor bronze washers smooth out the open/close action and the clip is upgraded to a four-way tip-up, tip-down, left-or right-handed clip.

Large but nimble.

Large but nimble.
I love a large knife. The ultra lightweight and thin construction makes it dissappear in the pocket. Even more so if you get an aftermarket deep pocket clip. The VG 10 steel is a great edc blade material with good edge retention and durability without being a burden to sharpen.

A review of the Spyderco Endura 4

The Short Review: 5 out of 5 stars.

For The Long Review ..... get a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, sit back, read on and enjoy......

This is MY review or in other words, a Blue Collar, Hard Working, knows up from down, the value of a dollar that's earned, rootsy kind of guy that wishes the IRS would stay out of his back pocket and God should stay in his heart. A Yes Sir and Yes Ma'am, bone fide Country Boy, straight shooting, hit your target dead on kinda review is what you are going to get from me, No Bullcrap! That's what you get with all my reviews and that goes for my review of the Endura 4 knife made by Spyderco.

Now for this review you should know that, I am a "Knife Guy" but I am NOT a Spyderco knife fan. I know Spyderco makes good knives and lots of different kinds but they just have never been my thing. Keep this in mind as you read on.

On a personal note there are a lot of people who are more knowledgeable than me when it comes to knives. Really the only thing that I can tell you about them is that the first toy my father gave me while I was still in the cradle was a bone handled Case pocket knife. I cut my teeth on that knife and I have never been without a "blade" of one kind or another ever since. So now after 50 years or so of all things knives, I can tell the ones that can cut it and the ones that cannot. (All stretching of the truth and puns intended.)

So, what do I think about the Spyderco Endura 4? Well let me tell you, the Endure can cut it and then some! I think it is a fantastic knife! I would give it 10 stars if I could. The only fault I have with the knife is how you flip open the knife blade. Instead of a thumb stud Spyderco uses a big hole (13mm) in the blade to catch your finger/thumb in to flip open the knife. This is more of me not being used to this style of opening system than the knife design so no points deducted. While I can flip open the blade on this knife (the blade has good bushings), it's just that I need more practice to be as fast as I would like to be with this knife. I need to add that this lock blade knife closes by pushing down the back spring indention. This can either be good or bad, just depends on your preference. It's fine for me on this knife.

With all that said the blade is 3 and 7/8 inches long with the edge of the blade being 3 and ½ inches long and comes razor sharp. The blade is more or less a drop point design and a true FFG- full flat grind. The widest point of the blade is 1 and ¼ inches at the hilt end. The blade is 1/8 inches at it's thickest along the top of the spine. The best thing and why the knife costs so much is the outstanding blade steel. Oh Yeah, we are talking fine Japanese steel here! The blade is VG-10 stainless steel made in Seki City - Japan! This is some Good Stuff here! (Keep in mind bang for buck. There are better steels made but they will cost you too.) VG-10 steel sharpens fairly easy and holds an edge well. While VG-10 steel will rust if exposed to moisture for sometime, normal blade maintenance will prevent this. Just dry the knife off and coat the blade with some light weight machine oil (3n1 oil or WD-40 works well). Use vegetable oil instead of machine oil if you will be using this knife for food preparation. Just use a small amount of oil (a few drops on each side of the blade). Wipe the oil on, then wipe it off the blade using an old clean rag, being careful not to cut yourself and that should do it.

My wife has a pink Spyderco Delica (its a little Endura) that I purchased for her several years ago and she has had no problems with this knife staying sharp or rusting and she uses it every day to cut up vegetables and fruits to eat. In fact her Delica is the reason I wanted an orange colored Endura for my birthday present this year. She had it engraved too for a super nice gift for me!

More about the knife....
The length of the knife open is 8 and ¾ inches long and 5 inches closed. The knife has a very functional slim black pocket clip that can be mounted on either side and on either end. This allows for the knife to be carried with tip up or tip down and right or left hand carry as so desired. The handles are what Spyderco calls FRN which stands for fiberglass reinforced nylon. I find them to offer great traction for your hand and the pattern reminds me of fish scales. It should also be noted that the handles are skeleton lined stainless steel for light weight and strength. According to the Spyderco website the knife weights 3.6 ozs. All I can say is for its size it is a lightweight knife.

The Spyderco Endura knife can be had in several different colors and the colors change from time to time. The changing colors adds to their collectability so if you see a color you like then you better be getting it while you can. I personally loved the orange color. I have lots of tactical black knives so the bright orange color was a nice change for me.

Also having an orange colored knife is a strange thing. You can pull out your "Orange" handled knife no matter what size it is and people just ignore it. Instead they act like it is a tool, a safety/rescue knife or box cutter, anything but what it is a razor sharp cutting machine. I pulled out this knife today in a restaurant to cut a steak and cheese sub in half and no one gave me a second glance. I have used my (small) black handled Kershaw Skyline knife to cut up a steak in a restaurant before and I thought they would call the police on me. People were almost freaking out, never mind everyone's restaurant supplied steak knife was larger that my Skyline knife. Good thing I did not use my knife to cut up the steak to resemble a gun. Seems like people have lost all common since these days, banishing a steak-pistol would probably have gotten someone killed as the "herd" stampeded for the door!

Well any-who, the bottom line is if you are looking for a great large size EDC (every-day carry) knife then the Endura might just be for you. If you need the same knife in just a little smaller and maybe in a friendlier version (great for smaller hands too) then get yourself a Spyderco Delica. Either way I think you'll enjoy your purchase for many years to come.

I am pretty-sure that Nutnfancy has a good video on this knife on "U-tube", it's worth a look-see. Just go to YouTube and type in the search box: "Nutnfancy Endura 4 review" and that should get you there. His reviews are like mine, a little long but you get a lot of information from them.

Thank you, for taking the time to read my review. I hope it was helpful and that you found a few grins in here somewhere. Take care and God Bless you! - Your Uncle Sawberry

Light weight, single hand operation, just what i needed.
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2011

i have passed on owning an endura for years. i had read all the super reviews and feedback, and finally i decided i wanted a folder with a different color scales than all the blacks i own, so i picked this one.

maybe one of the best choices i ever made.

all spyderco's come sharp from the factory. i own a bunch and i know people who do as well, and i've never heard a verfied source say they got a dull one yet. not saying it's never happened, but i've never heard it or seen it from a verfied, by myself, source. point being if you want a sharp out of the box knife you don't have to sharpen yourself when you get it, this one is for you. plenty of other reasons i'll state below on why this is a good choice.

on to the knife. steel is very good, imho. the vg-10 holds a good edge for awhile. sharpening is a little tough to get razor sharp, but i can do it and trust me i suck at sharpening. mine, like all spyderco's, came razor sharp out of the box.

mines been wet already and sweated on even though it's winter, i live, work, and play outside in the florida swamps. no rust or discoloration so far and i've had sandvik 12c27 rust with the same exposure this one had. so rust resistance appears to be pretty good, better than i expected anyways. this is my first vg-10 steel knife, but so far i am impressed.

handle design is good a little sharp with the edges of the frn scales on the bottom of the grip where the knife folds back into the handles. not a deal breaker, though and i am nitpicking. easily shaved down to make smooth if you prefer that like i do. for referrence i asked numerous people i work with who like knives and use them and ones who do not.... to hold it and cut with it, etc to see if i was nitpicking about the sharpish edges, and turns out it only bothered me, no one else noticed it even after i told them, and showed them what i was talking about. maybe the shape of my hands or grip? anyways...don't let that stop you it appears to only be me, and it only bothered me when using a strong grip and doing allot of repetitive cutting..so i shaved them down with another spyderco knive and now it's perfect for me anyways.....

blade had no play side to side or up or down. the spyderco lockback is nice and tight. far better than my buck 110, as it wobbles up and down a bit.

grip design is fantastic. bi-directional texturing on the frn scales works and works well, imho. wet or dry this knive didn't slip around in my hands. nice large handle that fits my little hands well, but also fit others i had play with it, with large hands, it fit them well to.

design of the blade i highly like, others i let play with it liked a more tradtional blade design better at first, but once they got to cutting, it changed their mind pretty quickly. some still stated while it was easy to use and worked well, they still didn't like the design for it's looks. i guess it's a love it or hate it design pretty much?

nice and lightweight. in the pocket i barely remmeber it's there. which is a huge plus...downside is the frn doesn't grab jean or khaki pant pocket material that well and it can easily pull out. which can be a plus if the g-10 annoys you when you pull it out and it grabs your pants a bit as it comes out...but i prefer that...this one doesn't grip so well. to clarify in my ramblings...mine won't fall out of my pocket, but i could see that might be an issue with certain pocket designs.

other than that i highly like the frn...i disliked it at first as i thought it looked cheap, but up close and the plastic in your hands...changed my mind. it's a highly useful scale material for strength and lightweight needs. i won't shy from it in the future like i used to.

mine was nicely finished and attention to details like all spyderco's. i would buy again. it's that good a knife for the price. there is a reason this is a best seller and one of the most popular models out there. it is that good.

Quality knife made in Japan (Cheaper Spyderco models are made in China using lower quality materials) Well engineered with a smooth operation…slightly disappointed it doesn’t come with a case or leather pouch rather than a Spyderco cardboard box at this price point but very happy with all aspects of the knife overall.

1.0 out of 5 stars Opening not smooth - hard to flip with one hand - sharp opening hole ...
Reviewed in Germany on May 8, 2021
Due do the design, the blade is not pivoting freely during the thumb or index flipping (friction on the safety bar) making it dangerous and hard to flip. Also, the opening hole was drilled and not smoothed enough - it made me bleed after opening it few time with the thumb due to the sharp hole edge that cut on my skin just under the nail... a very first for me...

I own several knife that are much better than this one in that regard.

The blade is nice though and the knife once opened have a nice look and cut well. The tip is nice. But all other default are a no go for me ... very disappointed for my first Spyderco.
