Construction:
The radar feels quite solid overall. Many have commented on the soft feel of the red button and when I called the company (still small enough to be very accessible) with questions I asked about this. They said that they had tried buttons with more "snap" but snapping/shaking the unit at the very instant the unit is activated was not good for accuracy. An improvement I would consider would be to have the button on the side so any movement due to pushing the button would not be in the direction of the measurement but I haven't noticed any significant change in reading due to pushing the button.
Accuracy:
I mounted the unit in my car and drove on empty roads so the radar showed my speed (it fits well in a basic cell-phone suction-mount). The readings always exactly matched my GPS. Holding a radar very close to a vibrating object generates beat frequencies that can simulate the Doppler shift caused by a moving object - for a radar of this type the shift is approximately 72Hz/MPH. This is why some police radars are checked using a tuning-fork. I used my computer to generate test tones for various speeds and held the radar right next to the speaker. The displayed speeds were exactly correct at a variety of test frequencies.
Ease of use:
Push button. Read display. Doesn't get much easier. An "always on" mode would be a nice addition but a bit of wood or cardboard and a rubber band works fine to hold down the button. A display backlight would be nice for low-light conditions but would eat up some battery.
Battery life:
I've only used NiMH batteries and on a couple of occasions have held the button down to take constant readings (every .75 seconds) and have gotten well over 2.5 hours of use. Since 2-hours equates to 9,600 readings, the advertised 10,000 readings per set may understate life. But constant on only uses .75 seconds of display time per reading while individual readings leave the display on much longer per reading which may account for the difference. In any case, battery life is fine.
Range:
I haven't had the opportunity to check cars at a full 1/2 mile but have picked up cars under fairly good but not perfect conditions at ~2000 feet. In measuring paper air-rockets, cyclists, snowballs, tennis balls, skiers and kids sliding on innertubes I haven't found range to be an issue for my use.
Interference:
The radar seems reasonably good at rejecting interference but there are still many things that can cause odd readings - many of which are mentioned in the manual. The ones I've observed: aiming at nearby electronics or fluorescent lights, nearby vibrations such as the interior of an idling car (only noticeable if there are no exterior "targets" - moving objects seem to have a far stronger return than caused by the nearby vibrations) and rain (thought the unit was broken till I realized it was reading the speed of the rain that was falling at the time). If there are too many targets - say lots of cars - it can be difficult to determine what object you are observing but with practice you can usually make a pretty accurate guess. If there is too much "clutter", the radar will not display a speed.
Conclusion and Wish list:
There is lots of potential for new products to follow this one. A side button and display backlight would be nice tweaks but what I'd love to see is a computer interface for logging, device-control, etc. But as-is, I've been quite pleased and impressed with this tiny radar.
Some typical uses include finding speeds of vehicles, baseballs, footballs, softballs, tennis balls, golf, biking, radio controlled planes, archery and boating. It has a 550 FPS limit, so it does not work with bullets.
I had no problems getting reliable measurements right away using the pocked radar. Just like the instructions said, press and release the red button while the pitcher is in her windup. The speed measurements I got were all within 0-2 mph of the ones that the coaches were getting on their juggs guns. Only a couple of times did I not get a measurement, and I felt that most times it was my fault as I didn't push the button at the right time. I do agree that the button is a bit "mushy", but it did work very well. A button where I could feel the click, might be a bit better.
I was able to get measurements standing behind the catcher, or off to the side a bit, but it seemed that the best way to use it was if you were catching the ball with one hand, and measuring speed with the other. I do think that this might not be very useful for measuring speeds from to far away or at large angles. I don't think it's designed for those needs.
If you are a coach or a father who wants to monitor your daughter's pitching speed, you'll most likely like the pocket radar. Mine came in a nice strong case with batteries and a wrist strap. The batteries seemed a bit worn out as indicated by the battery indicator on the pocket radar screen, but other than that I am very happy with it.
Top reviews from other countries
The unit comes in its' own felt lines hard plastic case, which has proven durable.
It uses a pair of triple A batteries, and those have lasted more than a year, or sporadic use.
If the Red Radar button is pushed in conjunction with the smaller black Recall button, the mode can be changed.
Select between: Miles per Hour (mph), Kilometers per Hour (kph), Meters per second (mps) and Feet per Second (fps).
Advance the selection with the Red Button, and lock it in with the Black Button.
This works best if you're lined up behind (or in front of) whatever you're measuring.
You don't want to be perpendicular (sideways to) your target, as it is in your field of view for a short period of time.
We found it worked best to kneel behind the player, about ten feet behind them.
Time the pressing of the Red Radar button, with a rapid press and release action, such that the middle of the pressure was at about the time that the stick made contact with the hockey ball.
With only a little trial and error, this became pretty easy.
Our group ranged from 30 mph to 90 mph, on the slapshot... and from 20 mph to 70 mph on the wrist shot.
We had a lot of fun with this, and a friend (the hard shot amongst our group) took this to his all-star game for the Fraser Valley ball hockey league to see what others had.
You can also use this for a constant speed, for example if you're measuring how fast something is... such as a car, while you're on the side of the road and it is approaching you.
Just press and hold the Red Radar button.
You can also test how fast the driver is going, while you're in the car, by aiming at something which you're approaching.
The Recall button will cycle through (ten or so) previous readings, and has a memory of previous readings from several months ago.
Once you're done playing with it, the unit auto shuts off.
My roommate is heavily into radio control vehicles, including Airplanes, Boats, Cars and Helicopters.
After seeing us play with this, he immediately needed one for his group and their hobby.
He bought the unit off of me, on the spot.
And I liked it enough to purchase another one that evening.
