Kettlebell CrunchTarget the rectus abdominus and oblique muscles with the kettlebell crunch exercise. To perform a kettlebell crunch, lay down on the ground or an exercise mat while keeping your knees bent and feet flat. Grab the kettlebell using both of your hands and position the kettlebell just behind your head. Slowly raise your upper body to a V-position and slowly lower the kettlebell to the start position. |
One Handed Kettlebell SwingAfter mastering the Two Handed Kettlebell Swing, this exercise will help strengthen the upper back, improve grip strength and core muscles. The single arm kettlebell swing is more comfortable than the two arm kettlebell swing, but take caution while performing this exercise because bad form may cause an injury. Perfect your two handed swing before attempting this exercise. |
Kettlebell Russian TwistTarget your obliques during this exercise. To perform the Russian twist using a kettlebell, sit on the ground with your feet slightly raised, knees slightly bent and body in a v-position. Hold the kettlebell in front of your chest with your arms bent and your hands wrapped around the bottom of the handle. Hold your body in this position, then twist your arms to one side and lower the kettlebell down. Twist your arms to the opposite side. As you do this, lower the kettlebell down to that side of your body. |

I'll be leaving my initial review intact, but I'd like to rescind my statement about the smoothness of the handle. As I've become more proficient at proper form I've found that the smoothness helps to facilitate rotation of the bell in my hands when it comes to exercises such as cleans (where at the top of the movement you have to "flip" the bell). And since naturally my grip strength has increased with continued use of the bell, that in itself kind of negates the need for me to wrap the handle. But again, this is just my opinion based on my personal use.
My original review is as follows:
NOTE:I have the 25-pounder.
If you've only done conventional weightlifting exercises for awhile and switch to using this, be prepared to put your ego aside and stick with the lighter bells. I train with weights and thought swinging around a rinky-dink little k-bell would be a cake walk. Not so. You work your muscles in a totally different way with this thing. I won't spend too much time discussing exercises, so let me get to the main point of my review:
Since a lot of the reviews focus on the size of the handle on the kettlebell, my accompanying pics will give prospective buyers an idea of what they should expect. No getting around it - I have small hands (no jokes, please). This has a nice thick handle, feels a tad thicker than a standard Olympic barbell, with a smooth finish. I tested it out with some single-handed swings. Single-handed exercises will really tax your forearms.
Then I switched to the double-handed swing. That's when I could see where people with bigger hands have been discouraged by this bell. As you can see in the pics, in order for me to get both hands in the bell I have to kind of release the pressure from my pinkies. It's not a problem for me, I just concentrate on maintaining however firm a grip I can manage.
As noted, the finish is very smooth. The bell tends to slide within my grasp. I'll just wrap the handle with friction tape. I lucked out and got a VERY reasonably priced, beautiful black bell with no cosmetic defects, but I have no qualms about ruining the aesthetics of it for the sake of safety.
Looking forward to completing my first, real kettlebell circuit workout:)

I was a bit nervous, given the previous quality issues reported by other CAP buyers. This one is in great condition, no damage, good finish, nice flat bottom. I love swinging KBs, I have made great progress with strength & conditioning. I DO NOT recommend the vinyl/concrete KBs by CAP, (15-20# KBs)they are toys and are way too big and have handle problems. I sent those back. Buy the cast iron ones only!
Before purchasing I sent a message to CAP asking about the handle/horn size, handle dia. is 1.5" (approx) and horn width is 7-3/4"any bigger might be too big for my hands. The size is very well proportioned and well balanced.
Recommended!
UPDATE 8/1/12 2nd order
Today, just received my 2 20# KBs, also iron by CAP. I put them through the paces! These are perfect weight for double-KB routines. Note, these also have big handles, about 1-1/2" in diameter. I like them for the challenging grip, smaller hands may not. These get slick when I start sweating, so I put some chalk on my hands between rounds. Product quality was good, finish good, packaging double-boxed, product box was strapped, lots of paper stuffing, my KBs arrived in perfect condition, thanks!
UPDATE 8/29/12 MOAR Kettlebells Pleeezzz!
Yesterday, I got my 4th KB, this one 25 lbs. See! I'm getting stronger, these really work! I swing 6 days/wk, never sore, always a great workout. 1-hand, 2-hand swing, snatch, clean, press, jerk, long cycle, windmill, Turkish get-up, bent press, various rows, floor presses, squats, deadlifts, lunges. Full body workout. Still very pleased with CAP quality and happy with my decision to collect this brand.
I recommend this as the best book on kettlebell exercises: Kettlebell Rx: The Complete Guide for Athletes and Coaches
Update: 9/30/12 I think I have enough... for now!
I just purchased a 45 lb and a 30 lb, the UPS dude thought he was a tough guy, stacked 30 on top of the 45 but then the 30 tumbled to the ground, busted through the box and got damaged. Got replacement a week later. I thread a small towel through the handles of the bigger KBs and dead lift them that way. more resistance. Love KBs! FYI, the bigger the KB, the greater the variation in quality. As they get bigger, the finishing on the bottom and paint quality diminish. the 45 lb has a rough & rather uneven bottom, but I use them on a towel on a rug in the basement, so no worries. I'm starting to practice KB juggling, have to do that in the park, where they can fall on the grass and not hurt anything. that's fun!
Side Note: I have met online a lot of great KB swingers on Fitocracy dot com, of course it is a good site for all athletes and anyone into exercising.
I have had the kettle bell for about one month now, and I'm doing the Sarah Lurie videos which I like a lot. The video set was only about 11$ and it came with 4 videos, two (kind of) starter videos, a boot camp quick but tough video and an Iron Core Warrior one that I don't think I'm quite ready for yet. So far I've lost at least 12" total off my entire body, and I'm pleased. I can feel my abs folks. I can feel them when I am at work, and when I am resting and when I am working out. I've had two C-Sections, so it feels great to be able to feel those muscles coming back. I would highly recommend this to anyone who can to try this out!
The Cap bell seems to be the best for your money, I haven't noticed any scratches or wearing away with it. It can get slippery when you're sweating, but you learn right away to keep a good handle on the bell or you're going to say good bye to your TV or window, or wall... After about a month in, I think I'm ready for the 20lb bell. If you're serious about finding a good piece of equipment, don't go pretty on this, go plain and smooth and solid.
Top reviews from other countries
I like the black enamel coating, aesthetically and practically.
I ordered the 45 lb for myself and the 15 lb for my wife. It's a good idea to start with a lower weight, and practice the techniques first. I would recommend trying one out at a gym or store, if you're not sure which weight to get for yourself.
There are many techniques, which makes this little piece of equipment a lot of versatility in the different workouts you can perform, depending on which muscle groups you wish to focus on. There are quite a few workouts that work the whole body, such as the basic kettlebell throw (the first one I tried and still my favourite). There are DVDs, YouTube videos, apps (many of them free), which can help you learn different techniques in using the kettlebell.
Weight training with a kettlebell can increase your strength, even when you use it for as little as 5-10 minutes a day. It's hard to find something that gives you better value for your money, in terms of building strength. There's a reason the old school Russian wrestlers to throw kettlebells around all day. I don't enjoy doing sets with weights, but kettlebells feel like you're exerting yourself in a more realistic way, so it seems to create a more practical strength (not just to look good).
A good cardio workout can be achieved in a short time, using kettlebells, especially when performing the techniques which work the whole body.
I can't say enough about working out with kettlebells, and I would recommend the CAP kettlebells to anyone.
