We were happy that ours arrived undamaged and complete. I had a very specialized installation, since this building has no windows that open (more on that later). After install, we powered the unit up and it began cooling the place down. The real test was a couple days later when my wife had a photo shoot with clients in there... I went and checked it out for myself and was very satisfied with the cooling! The space was very comfortable, even on a sunny, hot, muggy (70º dew point) day. It does make a bit more noise than we'd like for this space, but for the comfort of air conditioning, we're willing to make a sacrifice. It hasn't been in service for but a week now, but thus far it is everything we were hoping for.
Now for my installation... If you have windows that open (double or single hung style), this install is super easy. For any other type of window, or, in our case, an installation without operable windows, the installation gets a bit trickier. I had planned this out in my mind beforehand and knew exactly what I was going to do: cut 2 holes (for the intake and exhaust) through the side of the building and install the hose mounting plate directly onto the wall.
- I started by tracing the 2 holes to be cut by placing the hose plate on the wall. Quick cuts with the Dremel and I had 2 holes through the shiplap wall covering and drywall.
- I then cut out the insulation to match the holes made on the interior.
- I then marked center on the holes and drilled a small hole through the back of the exterior siding from inside the building. Moving to the outside of the building, and using the mounting plate as a guide again, I traced 2 circles on the exterior siding and cut out those holes, so I now had 2 holes all the way through the exterior wall.
- To install the mounting plate on the interior, I actually *reversed* it, so it sits flush against the wall, and the mounting adapters for the hoses are attached with screws from the back side of the plate. To attach to the wall, I simply drilled and countersunk 6 new holes and used flat head screws. (For winter I will remove the plate, remove the hose adapters, replace the insulation, reinstall the bare plate without the hose fixtures, and then use the included hole cover piece to hide the holes and make it look a lot cleaner.)
- For the exterior, I bought two 4" dryer vent kits, which come with sheet metal sleeves to install through the wall. Since the holes for this unit are larger than 4", I simply left the sleeves un-hooked and set them in the holes. They'll just help keep the insulation tucked where it's supposed to be, but aren't absolutely necessary. I decided on a flat louvered vent for the exhaust and an open-style angled vent (with critter guard) for the intake. I lined them up with the holes on the exterior and screwed them in to place.
- *** Many have expressed concern with how close the exhaust and intake ports are to each other. I agree with their assessment (that they should be separated more, so you don't pull in hot exhaust air constantly), so I angled my intake away from the exhaust port. Looks a bit goofy, but this is on an unused, unseen side of the building. Even if people were to see it all the time, I'd rather have a slight visual quirk than be constantly overworking the AC.
- Caulked around the newly installed vents to prevent water intrusion into the wall, and DONE!
We now have a comfortable studio at a fraction of the cost of a mini combo unit. Very happy with the performance and quality thus far!

On to the A/C itself, it's a hefty unit to be sure, about 100 pounds shipped, and about 70 pounds for the main unit itself. Even so, I don't work out or anything and I was able to haul it up some stairs with only some effort. Setup with the included parts is pretty easy assuming you have a Phillips head screwdriver. The results speak volumes; today was peak 93 degrees outside, inside my room never got over 75. This is with a beefy desktop computer (dual graphics cards, two monitors, blah blah) running in the room. Compared to my old portable unit (which was SINGLE HOSE) this blows it away. Under similar conditions during last year's heat wave, it would only cut about 5 degrees off, leaving me sitting in an 85+ degrees room. On the Whynter unit I notice _substantially_ less negative pressure when the unit is on, which is the point of the two hose system. With the single hose unit, I would have to put noticeable extra force to close the door to the room (since it is sucking air into the room from the rest of the house). With the Whynter, barely any additional force is needed.
From other reviews, I knew going in that the water condensation was going to be an issue. This would be the one thing my old single-hose unit had going for it, I never once had to drain the water. With the Whynter though, it's easy enough to deal with, and well worth the better performance. You could buy a $35-$40 condensate pump like some other reviewers did, and if you live in an area that is hot for a lot of the year then maybe that's worthwhile. For me though I use my A/C maybe 3 weeks total out of the year, so I went with the McGyver fix. As usual, McGyver fixes come with no warranty of any kind -
Step 1, sit the A/C unit on top of some bricks, plastic shelving, whatever you've got just get it off the ground about a foot and a half or so. Step 2, open the drainage valve in the back and pull out the rubber stopper. Step 3, twist up a paper towel and stick the end of it into the drainage valve. Step 4, get a big ass bucket and put the other end of the twisted up towel in it. Now thanks to good old Mr. Physics, the water won't accumulate in the unit, but rather it will drain out into the bucket through the towel. By doing this the unit will never shut off due to too much water inside it, but on the flip side you can flood your carpet if you don't pay attention. For reference, I ran the unit today for about 10 hours straight, and it produced 1.25 gallons of water. Humidity was about 70% outside. So make sure your bucket is at least 2+ gallons.
If you're particularly eco-minded, you can use the extra water to flush your toilet or water your garden. DO NOT DRINK IT though. It's got metal stuffs in it from the air conditioner which are Not Good.
Overall I give 4.5 stars, rounded to 5. This thing works incredibly well, much better than my old single hose unit. The drawback of having to drain the water is no big deal for me, but I take 0.5 star since it might be a big deal for others. If it is a big deal for you consider adding +$40 to the price of the unit as that will be the cost of a decent condensate pump and some tubing. Still worth it in my opinion. Or, just get yourself a bucket and enjoy the cool air.
One more bullet point, my UPS guy is awesome because took the time to warn me about something portable A/C units often have trouble with- These units are typically shipped ON THEIR SIDE since it is fairly tall inside the box and prone to falling over during shipping. This makes the coolant in the system settle in a bad way. When you get your unit, make sure to stand it upright and leave it sitting for at least 4 hours, half a day if you can. The manual also says to do this, but I could easily see someone skipping over this in a rush to get cooled off. Many times the UPS guy would deliver a portable A/C only to be called back the next day to return it because the customer tried to turn it on without waiting and broke it. So now he warns people personally. Thumbs up for the UPS guy!

It is not "Whisper" quiet NOR is it loud like a " Jet engine"!!. More like an 8'000btu window a/c.
But since "noise" is up to each person's own take on his/ her own level of tolerance.....
2 common issue's have been A) noise AND B) the bottom end of season drain. Since this has been the " baine" of some people's existence , ( Don't know why since there is an upper drain with garden hose fitting!!) For the main usage throughout the season. Hmmm...
I have placed my unit on piece of carpet - door mat size, to which I have 2 short pieces of 2×4 with packing foam stapled to them. See photos.... The unit is raised, stable, quieter (??) and 2.5 inches higher. So the end of season drain is easily accessible.
I find the unit well made, it was shipped promptly& securely in (2) large boxes. Both boxes being the size of a small apartment fridge, both do slide up and off leaving it sitting in a very snug form fitting tray. CAUTION..2 people should be used to unpack this 80lbs beastie!!
Set up & testing proved the a/c works, the window kit- needed little futzing, but you will need a roll of peel' n stick a/C foam to seal the window bit's edges. The unit on LOW FAN/A/C uses about
750- 830 Watts - on high the 1100watts, the fan on LOW = 45 Watts to 56 Watts high speed.
I will review/ edit once I'm able to use this Whynter 12'000btu A/C most during this year's Toronto Ontario summer...Hoping that summer 2016 won't be too much of a cooker!!

Hot, sticky, stinky T.O and this little gem is whirring away!!
It's using 200 watts more than my Danby 8000btu window jobby , but this is because it doesn't have an "energy saver" mode, the fan constantly runs(45watts) but is on.Still I would say it's a good buy, not great but good because of not having the energy saving mode. From my research on A/C's: #1window,#2dual hose, and lastly single hose for energy savings for people who have to pay for cool comfort.....hope this helps.

It is not "Whisper" quiet NOR is it loud like a " Jet engine"!!. More like an 8'000btu window a/c.

1: it is LOUD. This is more of a inherent flaw of portable AC units than something unique to this machine, but the volume this machine makes was advertised as quiet for a portable unit. This simply isn't the case. When the compressor is running it sounds like a jumbo jet is landing in my apartment. If you're going to buy this you might as well include a box of earplugs with your order.
2: The digital thermostat, although an appreciated feature, isn't quite accurate. It tends to over estimate the temperature by about 3 degrees. To cool my apartment to 22 degrees I have to set it to 25. This isn't a big problem, however if you're the type who likes accuracy it may be a minor bother. I suppose this has to do with the limitations of the thermostat being located within the machine.
Installation was relatively straightforward. To mount it to a window you will need to use some tape. I recommend using gaffer tape (available on amazon) because using duct tape will leave a horrible residue on your window pane and will be impossible to deal with when you need to uninstall the machine.
It is reasonably low maintenance if you live in a low humidity area. You do need to clean the air filter every few weeks. I have never needed to drain the condensate tank, although the plug is located in an impossibly inconvenient place (at the very bottom and back of the machine). If you live in a very humid place you may have to buy a condensate pump and some hose (also available on amazon), as I cannot imagine tolerating the hassle of routinely accessing that inconveniently placed drain.
I'm generally satisfied with the purchase and I would recommend this machine to someone who needs to buy a no-frills portable AC unit. However if at all possible get a window-mounted one as they are quieter and take up less space.
Good points:
- Cools quickly
- Nice design
- Easy to install
Wrong points:
- Too big (I live in a small appartment and it takes enough places)
- There is not a tank water, you need to drain manually the water
In general it is a great air conditionner. I recommend it!
