Some say it's pretty good, but only if you know exactly what you are buying it for. It works with either incandescent bulbs or compact fluorescent bulbs, and it was reliable for about a month before it became very intermittent.

Customers are dissatisfied with the sensitivity of the light bulb. They mention that it's not consistently sensitive when moving in the same location, it'll see motion too easily, and there's no adjustment for sensitivity or light off timer. The sensitivity is inconsistent at different angles of approach, and it senses only adequately. Some say that the product doesn't swivel or adjust for a more sensitive or less sensitive sensor. Overall, customers are disappointed with the product's sensitivity and the lack of sensitivity adjustment options.

I have been an active member of Amazon for quite some time and myself rely heavily on reviews provided by others when making a decision as to whether or not to purchase an item--whether that purchase be one that I am making through Amazon or another source (such as a local store); therefore, I am very aware of the value of user feedback and do my best to assist others in making a quality decision by providing quality feedback.
Was this review helpful to you? If so, I would very much appreciate it if you would rate this review accordingly. Many thanks!
Then I tried this model by First Alert (the user supplies the actual light bulb). I was wary that an LED bulb might not work -- especially a brighter bulb. Some reviews said "Yes" and other reviews complained of flickering. IN FACT, the one I purchased came in a package claiming it was compatible with LED bulbs. I installed a 17 watt LED (equivalent to 100 watt incandescent), the brightness rated at 1600 lumens -- and it works great! I use it in my garage. It comes on quickly when I enter and it shuts itself off after several minutes of no activity. In other words, it works exactly as I wanted. I purchased a second First Alert motion socket because I liked the first one so well. Highly recommended -- see the pic accompanying this review.

That said, here is my experience with both sensors. The First Alert has been used in the garage overhead, so I was concerned about its level of sensitivity. It worked perfectly from the vantage point of the kitchen door that opens into the garage, as the light would come on as soon as the door opened. However, the kitchen door is three stair steps higher than the garage floor, and I've noticed less sensitivity from floor level, especially when one is coming around the side of the car. I do like that it turns off relatively quickly after motion has stopped, but it is disappointing that there is not a daylight sensor that keeps it from turning on during the day. Despite it repeatedly turning on and off a lot - supposedly the worst thing for an electrical bulb, according to my electrical engineer friend - the lightbulb was not changed out in 3 years of operation and is still working. The First Alert supposedly has a 360 degree radius, but I have not witnessed that, believing instead that it has dead zones. And sometimes the exact same movement in the exact same spot will not turn the unit on again. It's a little odd. The AmerTac, on the other hand, only has a 120 degree sensor radius, which many folks complained about, but is actually perfect if you just want a light when you enter a room - such as descending the stairs into the basement. Mine is over the washing machine and picks up movement about 10 - 15 feet away as I walk towards it. It does seem to remain on for longer than 15 minutes, and I admit to peeking into the basement occasionally to ensure it's turned off. Unlike it's First Alert counterpart, it's still working three years later, not that it should win any awards over that.
Bottom line: it really pays to figure out exactly what you need based on the activity in the given area. If you are in and out of a room quickly and repeatedly, you don't want a light that remains on for 15 minutes. If you spend a lot of time in the area, you don't want to constantly be waving at the light (in which case you're best off with a sensor for entering the room, and a standard fixture for working in it). And if you just need enough light not to kill yourself as you pass through one place to another, a battery-operated light is simple, effective, and movable. None of them are 100% effective. But they all make life much easier, which is why we repurchase them even though they don't meet our high standards. Sometimes simple is best.
Top reviews from other countries
I do notice there is a small lag before it activates (less than a second), but this is similar to other motion activated devices that I have. The 360 degree is working as stated, as it activates both when I open the garage door or the door leading to the house, which are on opposite side of the sensor.
My garage door opener lights would not turn off so I removed those bulbs altogether and screwed this into the light holder socket. Added a led bulb and I am all set. Light turns on when the garage door opens and after about 4 minutes turns off.
Love it as I don't have to bother with the switches anymore.
