Product Description
The Mitutoyo 530 series vernier caliper has two sets of jaws and a depth bar for four-way measurement in inch and metric units of outside dimension (OD), inside dimension (ID), step, and depth, for applications where the highest accuracy is required, especially in scientific research and in industries where parts must fit exactly.
The caliper has a dual vernier scale, with an upper scale measuring in inches and a lower scale measuring in millimeters. A 14-degree vernier face angle improves visibility and helps prevent parallax error in measurement reading. The caliper’s two sets of jaws provide the capability to make OD and ID measurements, as well as step measurements, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer steps are measured. A depth measuring blade with rounded edges provides the ability to make depth measurements. The scales are raised to slide easily and protect the graduation markings. A thumbwheel permits fast and easy measuring. A clamping screw on the upper scale rotates to control scale movement and locks to hold the sliding jaw’s position. The caliper is made of hardened, corrosion-resistant stainless steel with a satin chrome finish that helps reduce glare. The caliper meets Federal Accuracy Specifications GGG-C-111B.
Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.
Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

This line of Mitutoyo calipers all have a vernier scale, that elegant 17th century invention that makes dials and electronics look fragile, clumsy and unneeded. And if you need higher accuracy than 0.02mm or 0.001” you might want to consider a micrometer.
But the Mitutoyo numbering system is a bit obtuse, compounded by so many models to choose from. This is what I learned:
530 – Standard model with lock screw
531 – Thumb lock
532 – Lock screw with secondary carriage
The second three-digit number distinguishes length, whether metric, inches or both, carbide jaws or not, and standard or high accuracy. I have not been able to discern much logic in this numbering system, except that 101, 102 and 103 are all metric but not the only ones, so finding the precise one you want is a bit of an expedition. The best source I found is Mitutoyo’s own website. Your search will be worth it.
All around it is a miracle that tools of such quality, refinement, and lasting value—another reviewer called his prized Mitutoyo the Patek Philippe of vernier calipers—can be had for so little.
Yes, the Chinese digital calipers you can buy for half this price are smooth and easy to use. Now take the battery out of it and use it to try to measure something. What's that you say? It's hard to read? You wish you had something analog that you could read quickly and easily without having to deal with batteries? You've come to the right place.
TL;DR: If you're reading this review you're probably shopping for a vernier caliper. If you care enough about accurate measurements to buy a vernier caliper, you should buy this one.
Inch side is fractional.

Jetzt habe ich einen eigenen und die Qualität ist identisch, wie vor 20 Jahren.
Bei guter Pflege kein nennenswerter Verschleiß feststellbar.
Und dazu kommt: Niemals leere Batterien! 😜
