After putting it together I was ready to till some hard clay dirt in my yard. We planted grass in our new yard and it grew in nicely around most of the yard but it didn't take in a smaller section, probably because the dirt was too hard. This is why we bought the tiller. I hadn't used a tiller in several years. The last one I used was a commercial grade gas tiller (a big beast). It was pretty easy to handle. I was expecting very little from this tiller because of it's price and size. I turned this on and it ripped right out of my hand and I almost face planted it in the dirt. I gave it a second try and held on tighter. I was completely amazed with its power! It felt stronger than the commercial tiller I used years before (the commercial tiller is probably designed to be easily handled, however). Even in the hard compacted soil this little tiller chewed through it like it was nothing. I had to hold on for dear life because this thing kicks like a mule! It spit out several large rocks with ease. After a few minutes I got the hang of it and gained better control over it. My wife and I are the same height (5'9") but she weights a lot less than I do. She took a turn and she was also able to handle it after getting used to it. So don't be fooled, this thing is very powerful but it's lightweight which makes it easy to handle (after getting a little used to it).
I tilled an area about 100 to 150 sq. ft in just a matter of minutes. The dirt was cultivated very nicely, very level, and about 4 to 6 inches deep. I felt I could have gone deeper if I needed to. My wife probably did an area twice the size in about 10 minutes. (She had to be careful because our brand new sprinklers were close by.) When we were done my wife complained of smelling something that was burning and thought it was the tiller but I couldn't find anything but my sniffer doesn't work so great. I inspected everything and it seemed fine.
The extension cable was a bit of a nuisance but it was worth it because the electric motor is fairly quiet, easy to start, and low maintenance. My wife seemed to handle the cable better than me, but she usually does everything better than me.
When I woke up this morning I wanted to go till something. This thing is just fun. I haven't had it long enough to vouch for it's longevity but it seems like it could last a while. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this item to anybody looking for a stellar garden tiller for small to medium sized jobs. For the price I don't think you can go wrong.
Update: I was using this tiller one day on my back yard and it just stopped working. We let it sit for several hours after several failed attempts to get it started. After waiting for a while it started right up but only ran for two minutes and stopped. We borrowed a neighbors tiller to finish our job and just stored this one in the garage for the winter. I pulled it back out a week ago to check on it and it had the same problem. It seems to think it's overheating, even when you aren't tilling anything but air. I contacted customer service (details in the manual) and they are sending me a new one. The fact that getting a replacement was so easy and customer service was so awesome, I will not remove any stars from this review. I hope the new tiller will be better than this one. So far it just seems my current unit is defective.
I had already turned the ground in my garden, which had been lawn area for years, with a garden fork; but the thick grass and roots would not allow the ground to loosen and break up. I ended up with a 16 x 16 patch of grassy clumps that I couldn't rake or plant. To break up the clumps I tried various cultivators: A garden weasel ended up all tangled with grass and roots and wouldn't turn. My Garden Claw just loaded up with the grassy clumps. I even tried sharpening my hoe and using it to hack at the clumps to break them up--a very labor intense and slow process. I was at my wits end. I began to realize that the only way I was going to be able to loosen the soil effectively was going to be with a roto-tiller. I figured I'd need to rent one at a local rental center, but when I learned it was going to cost me $80.00 for a half day, I started looking for other alternatives.
I came across this Earthwise TC70001 11-Inch 8-1/2 Amp Electric Tiller/Cultivator at Amazon.com. The first thing that caught my eye was that all but one of the reviews were 5-stars, and the only one that wasn't at that time was 4-stars. If not for that, I don't think I would have given this machine a second look. And even then, after reading all the reviews, I still doubted that a light-weight electric roto-tiller could have enough power to do what I needed it to do. But I figured, what did I have to lose? Even if it didn't work for breaking up the clumps this year, I'd still be able to use the machine to till the garden in future years after the soil had been prepared the first time. So I decided to give it a try.
BOY, AM I GLAD I DID!
In a word, this thing is FANTASTIC! First of all, I was amazed at the power it has. It effortlessly churned out rocks bigger than my fist. Needless to say, it chewed through the grass clumps and roots with ease. I did stop a few times to untangle debris from the tines, but it was easy to remove and in just a few minutes I'd be up and running again. The power is more than adequate. It digs through the soil, even Michigan clay, without bogging down, leaving a loose, mealy planting bed in its wake. I tilled the entire garden twice--first north and south; then east and west. The whole job took about 3 hours. I've since used the tiller in other areas of my yard like flower beds and areas of the lawn that needed leveling. I am truly impressed with the results.
The main drawback that I see is the machine's light weight. When it hits something solid in the ground, like a root or large rock, it wants to jump and buck like a rodeo bull. You just need to be ready for it when it happens. Overall, though, it is very easy to control.
For just about 50% more than the cost of renting one of those gas monsters at our local rental center for a half-day, I was able to purchase this tiller that I will be able to use for many years to come; not only in my vegetable garden, but my flower beds as well. Quite honestly, I don't think I've ever been more satisfied with a purchase. I wish I could give this thing more than 5 stars! (Of course, the service I got from Amazon.com (including the free shipping) was impeccable as always.)
PROs:
1. High amperage - this translates to High Power. More than enough power for a small tiller.
2. Low cost - makes this tiller a tremendous value.
3. Well made.
4. Simple to use.
CONs:
1. Light weight - so if you hit something solid in the ground, like a large root or rock, the machine tends to jump violently. Not a huge disadvantage, however, as long as you are aware of this tendency and pay attention.
2. Narrow width - limits the effective usage of this tiller to smaller gardens. But this can also be an advantage--you can easily use this machine to till between rows in your garden and other narrow areas where a larger tiller won't fit.
Top reviews from other countries
My garden is only about 100 ft/square. I would still use this tiller for a garden up to about 200 ft/square. Passed that, I would rather have a wider machine. I'd like to find one negative with this tiller but so far I can't. It exceeded all my expectations. The motor part seems very solid compared to the slightly flimsy handle assembly but at this price, I think this is as good as it is going to get. For a machine that I'm going to use once a year, this is more than I really need.
