This toy is completely plastic. It has bright colors, buttons, songs and jungles, flashing lights...lots of stuff to keep kids entertained. It also has an on/off button. This is CRUCIAL!! I have no problem with flashy toys that sing songs, but the songs in this do get repetitive. And it's pretty loud. Sometimes it will 'activate' after it hasn't been used for awhile, so you'll hear the little singing vacuum 5 minutes after you've put it away. Just switch it off when you're done and this won't be a problem!
The vacuum comes with 3 colored balls that you can place around the floor. These balls will be 'sucked up' by the vacuum and appear in the clear window in the front. The window lifts up easily to release the balls. There's no actual suction in this thing, so no need to worry about injury or sucking up things that don't belong. It's a plastic propeller mechanism that spins to pull the balls inside.
There are 3 buttons on the front that can change the song of the vacuum. They're easy for little ones to press.
As others have mentioned, this thing is top heavy. It won't stand on its own unless it's absolutely perfectly balanced and you get a little lucky. I would say that's impossible for a kid to do on his or her own. So...this needs to either store leaning up against something, or store laying sideways on the ground.
The size is great for kids. My daughter could walk with it when she was one. She's now almost 6 and can still use it, though it doesn't get much play anymore. It's definitely a toy for the younger kiddos.
