Highly recommend, well worth the price. We grate nutmeg every morning for our oatmeal. We started out with a microplaner and then, after many skinned knuckles, we bought an inexpensive "acrylic" grater, which was ok. But it was frustrating to refill and just meh when it came to turning the crank - a crude tool that was not a joy to use. We've been using this grater every day for almost a year - and are still thrilled with the purchase. It's thoughtfully designed (fold up crank, cap for the bottom so nutmeg dust isn't all over our spice drawer, easily-accessible storage for 4+ whole nutmegs, etc). The grinder is powerful but turning the crank is effortless & smooth -- no "sticking" like with our previous inexpensive grinder. The particles of nutmeg are quite fine - not as fine as the "dust" that the microplaner produced, but plenty tiny enough for any recipe.

Short version: Very satisfied. Much better than the William Bounds model in our experience.

I was initially put off by how lightweight the grater was, but after inserting a nutmeg, I was impressed by the claw that grabs it and forces it firmly against the laser-cut (they're proud of that fact) blade. Just a few easy turns (the top black part turns with the handle, so I still have to remember to grip it by the brushed metal part) and a flurry of finely shaved nutmeg particles floats out and dissolves into the target dish. There's a cap that covers the business end so you can grind awhile and tap the results into a measuring spoon. I have found that three or four turns on an individual portion of mac and cheese gives an ample sample of that incomparable fresh nutmeg flavor that makes all the difference.
We used to have a William Bounds Nut Twister mill with the clear acrylic top that worked pretty well for a couple of years until I dropped it and the top broke into several pieces. This unit appears sturdier, though I haven't dropped it yet (I'll update if I do) and, though I haven't gone through a whole nutmeg yet, the claw appears to apply quite a bit of force with some serious-looking teeth and stops just above the blade; two abiding complaints with the Bounds mill was that the last 25% or so of a nutmeg was left unused, and that all too often the nutmeg would stick on the blade and the driver would lose its grip and instead inscribe a useless circle in the top of the nutmeg. This unit should get you further on each meg.
So, so far so good. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

08 June 2013 update: the grater is a little workhorse; I love how it uses almost the entire nut. We use it frequently and it never disappoints or scrapes our fingers/knuckles. Still recommend it highly.

I use nutmeg for tea, coffee, puddings, and general cooking, as well as spice blends for ciders, meads and spiced beers. There is no comparison of fresh vs pre-ground nutmeg, both for aromatics and flavors! We had one of those scraper things you store the nut in, and was a pain, and usually you couldn't finish out the nut without taking some skin off your knuckles. This unit is very well designed. Loading the nut is easy and shaves fine powder very well. There's storage for more nuts too! Great idea and the nuts are in a sealed part of the unit. One trick to use all of the nut is when it gets down to a sliver, don't remove it but rather put another nut on top of it and it'll grind the first sliver before starting on the second one on top of it. Very cool and well designed unit that I hope lasts a long time, as I now enjoy grinding nutmeg, rather than dreading it.

Honestly we had one few year ago, and it works great! And buy them again after the old one got broken. Unfortunately the quantity goes way down, broken after few used. It’s time to seek for another grinder now.
Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2020
It's easy to use and it delivers consistent finely ground nutmeg. The cap on the bottom is a nice touch to make sure I don't dribble bits of nutmeg across my counter. The problem I've encountered with other nutmeg mills is a lack of longevity. This mill works well now. Check back in a year to see if I'm still happy with it.

I purchased my nutmeg grinder in January 2014! It has been used almost daily since and it is a keeper. I love the cover at the bottom which catches the fine shavings of the nutmeg. I even know how many cranks to get get a 1/2 tsp and pour the nutmeg directly from the cap into my batter. It holds several nutmegs at the top, takes up little space, and never fails me. I purchased several expensive mills before finding this one. Recently the blade grinder section (plastic)quit tightening to the cylinder (metal). BUT by pushing the grinder down, it still works. I plan to keep it for "just in case" and treat me to a new one for Christmas. You will love this too.
Update. I decided to try another nutmeg grinder which does not require the bottom to be tightened. It is the
Microplane 48060 Manual Spice Mill - Cinnamon Grinder and Nutmeg Grater - Black
This is now my favorite. Fewer parts to go asunder and produces wonderful nutmeg shavings.

This is a very nice good looking nutmeg grater. I bought one for myself, and then when I realized how well it works, I bought one for a friend as a gift.
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2015
I can't believe how expensive nutmeg graters are. I appreciate the other reviewers helping me settle on this one, which I really like, without an aggravating trial and error that I can't afford. Thanks.

The storage compartment is good, holding quite a few nuts despite its small footprint. Grating is a breeze and there are two choices of grind based on which way you turn the crank. One direction makes whisper-thin little shavings, the other makes a fine dust. I'm looking forward to seeing it get the nutmeg all the way down to a little nub as other reviewers have mentioned... and I think it will succeed, due to the very clever mechanism for holding the nut in place. The mechanism is very easy to load and, for bonus points, it came with nice clear instructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars El primer molinillo de nuez moscada que cumple con su función!
Reviewed in Spain on October 16, 2021
Excelente. Un 10. Lo recomiendo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo macinino
Reviewed in Italy on August 1, 2017
Ottimo attrezzo, molto efficace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gefu nutmeg mill is the best!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2016
Grated nutmeg is delicious, the problem with nutmegs are they are hard to hold and grate manually. I have dropped so many whole, half or part nutmegs into whatever I am making and having to throw them away!
So I bought a nutmeg grinder, a clear acrylic one, it seemed to be doing the job but it didn't do it easily and eventually gave up on me. I went back to hand grating and dropping my precious nutmegs into my hot chocolate, rice pudding etc.
I looked at all the nutmeg grinders, read the reviews and decided the Gefu looked the best, didn't get it for a long time though.
Finally I bought one and I have been using it daily for a couple of weeks now and it grates nutmeg effortlessly and looks good too! It comes apart to clean, and it has storage for 3 spare nutmegs when one is in the grinding chamber. It also grates hazelnuts, but I haven't tried that as I don't have any at the moment.
I wondered if it would grate chocolate too.
So far this is well worth the price, and if it continues for the duration of the 5 year warranty I will be a very happy bunny!

Update: it's 7 years now and I have used the grinder daily and it's still as good as the day it arrived. The cap had broken, and I recently contacted Gefu to see if I could get another one and they very kindly sent one from Germany. I still highly recommend this grater and Gefu customer services.
