Where are the details needed to make a simple cut? Instructions are desperately needed and I am not a "tile-guy." After ruining many pieces and getting very frustrated, I took a break and came back again... several times. Once I figured it out it went smoothly and quickly.
I learned:
1. Won't cut stone or marble.
2. Must cut off 1" of "drop." (Cutting a 6" ceramic tile, the cut must be 1" to 5", no 1/2" or 5 1/2".
3. Breaking is a steady slow light pressure, not a "death-grip" squeeze. I could not find this tacit knowledge anywhere: Squeeze moderately and hold for a few seconds. (I am not a pro.) Hold the light squeeze up to 5 seconds. If no break, stop, breathe, and try again with just a little more pressure. Hold the pressure and the tile will break itself.
4. Expect to ruin quite a few tiles teaching yourself how to cut. Be patient and develop the feel of how lightly to press based upon material type and thickness.
5. The product is cheaply built but plenty adequate to redo your own kicthen and bath.
6. Product worn out when the metal ridge (in the base) you are pressing against is flattened out... from squeezing the braking handle TO HARD.
7. Straight cuts only.
8. Position of breaking foot less important than light consistent pressure.
9. Buy this big cutter, not littler ones.
10. Use the provided 90* guide.
11. Score tile 1 time only.
12. Read reviews. I cut ceramic tile.
Now, a couple caveats: 1. I don't expect this tool to last forever, but at its price point that shouldn't be a consideration. I love Milwaukie, DeWalt, Klein, Snap-On. This isn't one of those tools. But I got one job out of it, and I would imagine I could get another 10 jobs out of it before having to replace it. I can live with this.
2. Assembly was really poor from the factory. Nearly all the fasteners were loose, and two had fallen off. Upon opening the packaging I was *extremely* dismayed about this, and sure the thing wasn't going to work. Don't give up if your tool arrives poorly assembled, just snug everything up and and it'll work.
Five stars when price is considering price. Four otherwise.
I have laid a few houses worth of kitchens, baths and patios. I have used a nice breaker before and had no issues. I'm going back to using a wet tile saw even though the blade kerf takes some width out of a half tile because this thing is just a waste of metal so you can waste your tile. DO NOT BUY.
No problems at all and worked well.
