I decided to give a bike leash a try and I read the reviews of all the leashes online. As I said, I am a timid cyclist. The Bike Tow Leash is the most expensive, but the reviews said the dog could not pull you over if your weight was on the bike. So I did it; I bought a BTL and gave it a try. The first day I was too scared to even get on the bike -- and the dog CAN pull it over if you're not sitting on it! I walked him next to my bike every day for a few days and finally got brave enough to ride the bike around my cul-de-sac...And the thing works. The dog can't pull it over and he's controlled at a perfect distance from the bike.
I've gone a mile or so with him in my neighborhood 6 or 7 times and we did a mile on the rail trail over the weekend. I'm taking it slow to build his fitness level.
You cannot feel the dog pulling at all with the BTL. I know he is pulling, because I can see him, but you can't feel it. He went around behind the back wheel once while I was walking him next to the bike, but when we're riding he just doesn't do that. Get him up to a good speed and he doesn't notice anything; he's just running. He stays right next to me and runs with me. I feel completely safe and in control of my dog.
I find it simple to install and remove. Most days I don't remove it, I just clip it up under the seat. It's hooks to his collar easily.
Since my dog is black I was concerned that he would not be visible to cars, so I bought a bright vest for him to wear when we are in my neighborhood where there might be cars. On the trails I didn't bother. I do carry another leash in case I need to take him off the bike for any reason.
The BTL is a smartly engineered, simple, and effective item. I have a exercise partner now that loves to run and never refuses to go. I recommend it highly.
The engineering of this is fantastic. I have a lightening-fast hound who needs to run to be happy. Even on long, off-leash walks in the woods, he's tireless, and I'm wiped out. The bike tow leash finally enables me to go at his pace without exhausting myself. My two feet are no match for his four, but the bike tow leash levels the playing field. We do a 35-45 minute ride in the morning and he's content all day. The best part is he cannot affect my balance no matter what-- if he pulls for any reason, I feel a slight slowdown on the bike, but I never feel like I'm going to be unbalanced. Two critical considerations: I bought a running vest rather than a neck collar for him with this item, and I let him set the pace. I never push him. Oh, and since it's summer, I take him out first thing in the morning when it's stll in the 60s. I never run him on this in the hot summer sun. And about mid-way through, I take him off leash and let him sniff around for a few minutes. The funny thing is I was drawn to this product because I injured my knee and it was hard to walk, let alone run, my dog. Now not only can I run my dog to his heart's content, my knee feels 100 percent better from the bike riding. I have recommended this item to other people I know who have high-energy, sporty dogs who would benefit from being able to run regularly.

The engineering on this thing is nothing short of a miracle; Preston can get very distracted by dogs and squirrels, and he's very powerful, sometimes I can barely control him with both arms and all my weight. So I was scared that I could never risk biking with him or find myself in a faceplant with my bike in a heap. That's why I invested in this, the most expensive bike leash made.
Worth every penny and then some. This leash controls his pulling BETTER than I ever could! I could barely tell that he WAS pulling, especially when we were going at a good pace. He'd try to veer and be pulled right back.
The exercise for him is fantastic - the way it's made he can actually pull me, and I let him. And if I speeded up he was right there. (No worries, I was careful - we only went around the block a couple of times. He's not used to it and his FEET aren't used to it. Although when we came home he was sort of in a groove and did a couple of laps around the yard at the same pace we'd been going...)
It's fantastic. Every single claim is absolutely true, even the part about easy installation - bing bam boom.
Don't be afraid to make the investment, it's a marvel and your dogs will ADORE you.
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 15-
Just wanted to say that my dog and I are happier than ever with this. We spend much more time together, he's in fantastic shape, and it's easily one of the best products/things/objects I have ever owned, because it works beautifully at keeping us both safe and because it does, my dog and I are happier, we have more time together, it just elevates our lives, truly. If you really love your dog (and enjoy bicycling! It's my primary transportation...) don't hesitate. You will not regret it.
BUT I DO WANT TO CAUTION YOU!
Please, be VERY responsible and careful about your dog's health and endurance! If they are anything like my dog, they will want to run themselves into the ground! Don't let them! Go slowly, bring water, pay close attention to your dog's signs to make sure she doesn't overdo and work your way up. Even if they have good endurance already, this is tough on their pads. The maker told me that asphalt is less of a problem than cement, too.

It’s very easy to install and no tools required. This is the BEST PURCHASE I’ve made and it’s well worth the money. I feel in full control when cycling and I never have to worry my pup yanks me in different direction.
