I bought two mats of the same size and configuration - one for bare floors and one for plush pile carpeting. The mats have slightly different thicknesses. Through correspondence with Floortex, I found out that the bare floor mat is .075" thick and the plush pile mat is .11" thick. The other major difference is that the one for carpeting has gripper teeth, while the one for bare floors is smooth on the bottom. At the same time, I also ordered some heavy-duty double-sided clear tape. This is not your everyday double-sided tape. It's an industrial strength product. The link to that tape is:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Y7EXAA/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_17
With a little careful measuring and cutting, I put down six strips of tape - five evenly spaced across the field, and one across the lip - on the top of the mat intended for carpeting. I then carefully lowered the smooth mat for bare floors onto it, taking care to keep the edges of two mats aligned, and taking care to get the rough top surface of the bare floor mat oriented correctly so the chair would have some surface to provide a little resistance. I then used a tile roller to press them together firmly.
It's been six months since I put these mats down and I've not had any cracking. I've never gone six months without any cracks appearing in a chair mat. In retrospect, I probably could have used less tape, to adhere them together, but since I bought that roll of tape just for this purpose, it was fine with me that I used the whole roll. With that much tape, they are solidly joined together.
Yeah, it was sort of expensive, and it was a bit of work to put it together. But, not having to throw out $90 chair mats every four months kinda makes up for the fuss, bother, and expense.
UPDATE 19 December, 2016: Okay, it's been two years since I put my Franken-mat in place and I'm very pleased to report that it's still rock solid. I've had no cracking, no discolouration, and none of the drama of having a chair mat that shifts about all the time. It's been good enough that although I promised I'd do a one year update, I've frankly forgotten about it because it just sits under my chair day after day, doing what it's supposed to do. That's good.
But this thing is sturdy and holding up well so far, and might last long enough to protect a new rug and carpet some day.
Makes for much easier tracking of my office chair, and the spikes on bottom ensure it stays put.
Just flexible enough to ease lifting for cleaning underneath - and you will need to do a fair amount of that as crud conspicuously collects along the less-sweepable edges.
In my case, I was aware of the danger as I had read a review written by a lady who was cut on the face by the mat when she released the banding . . . sooooo . . . I gave considerable thought as to how I was going to release the banding.
I decided to perform the release out on my deck where nothing would be damaged inside of our house. I put that banded mat back into the box, laid it down on the deck, leaving enough unobstructed room for it to expand into a flat state without hitting anything. That proved to be the correct decision.
With the rolled and still-banded mat inside the box, I cut the banding with a regular hand saw, which is about 30" long, the purpose being to prevent my hand from being hit by the mat as it rapidly uncoiled. Much to my surprise, the box held the mat even with the banding cut! The next step was to cut the box, which released the mat with a fury! The d____d thing still "got me", leaving a small cut on the hand. No big deal, but my using extreme caution paid off in spades!
As for mat itself, it is indeed sturdy and thick enough to nearly eliminate deformation of thinner mats which I used over the years. Although it has been in daily use for about a month, durability is still an unknown. That said, I am reasonably certain that it will outlast less expensive mats that I've used previously. I certainly expect it to last MUCH LONGER given the fact the cost of this mat is nearly 4 times the cost of previous mats, that, BTW, deformed immediately, resulting in the mat nearly disintegrating after about 18 months of use, 5 to 6 hours per day, 4 to 5 days a week.
The bottom line is that, assuming that the chair mat endures for 3 to 5 years, the high price will be justified, so, if you are tired of replacing chair mats every year or two, then go ahead and buy this one . . . just be D____D careful when releasing the banding!
NOTE TO THE MANUFACTURER: I strong recommend that you coil the mat using 2 straps, long enough to permit the slow uncoiling of the mat, until it has uncoiled sufficiently to have released the energy to a point where the risk of injury to one's body is all but eliminated. Secondly, it is imperative that the cautionary warnings ALSO be printed on the OUTSIDE of the box! The only other options would be to increase the size of the box to a point where the kinetic energy of a tightly-coiled mat is reduced to a more manageable level. Increasing the box size, would, in my opinion, raise the shipping cost prohibitively, even if the mat were shipped flat, hence my suggestion of two long straps capable of being released slowly in a controlled fashion.
Sorry for the lengthy tome, but I considered it very important to inform purchasers of the danger of unwrapping the product.
ADDED:
Others are saying that the mat moves and/or migrates in use. That is absolutely not my experience. The mat has not moved even an 1/8th of an inch from where I positioned it over a month ago. I am not doubting others. I am merely passing my experience.
Secondly, this mat has not dimpled one iota.
I can now highly recommend this mat.

I think that this mat was designed for relatively low pile office carpet, not thick household carpet. If the pins on the bottom were longer, it would be perfect. As it is, it is "satisfactory".
The product itself is great. Firm and super easy to roll on.
My previous mat was a PVC one and frankly I'd never go back. The amount I spent on replacing chairs because of the force required to move out of the PVC ruts more than justifies the cost of these.
