black trim on my FX4. For the flat part, I tried a small roller, but that really brought up the texture, so smoothed out as best as possible with the brush. After 3-4 days of drying, the product looks great, and looks like it seals up tight.
I also had some smaller paint chips coming off the outside of the doors, so I masked a straight line and prepped both doors and jams and applied the coating to those. Looks great & adds some stone chip protection too. Since my truck is a two tone with a dark grey bottom, it is not as noticeable if I tried to use in on a lighter color. I'm planning on purchasing the gallon size next, and finish my truck bed, but will probably use a roller, and a spray can to finish off the tough to reach areas. It seems to be thinner than expected when first applied, but using a second coat really builds up the thickness. I also cleaned up my trailer hitch with a light sanding, and applied to that. It makes it look brand new! Prep the surface per instructions, and use a paint brush for smaller areas. Very happy with this product
On my truck, I've touched up the front and rear steel bumpers and skids multiple times. They always clean up well, and after the layers I've added on there, there's minimal damage after scraping against logs or rocks offroad. I've even had people confuse it with rhino-liner or other expensive coatings, asking me where I got my armor coated.
I grind everything smooth with an angle grinder with a paint stripper disc, then wipe acetone, then glob this stuff on in layers using the cheapest foam roller I can get at Home Depot. Wear gloves, it takes days to get off of your skin. Wear a respirator, this stuff is fumey until it dries.
It took about 4 coats to get the "textured" finish you usually see out of bed liner, but I got it! Smooth, like others have said, and not rough like Rhino. There is some gunky stuff in the can that actually clumps together to form the texture, so it is CRUCIAL that you shake the can up before you use it, and shake it well. Both my cans had all the gunk condensed at the bottom, and I had to re-seal them and shake to get it mixed properly.
So why 4 stars?
THIS. STUFF. STINKS.
Lord have mercy, get ready to be gassed to death. I painted outside in the breeze, and it was definitely woozy work after about 40 mins. Even better, when it is curing, the scent lingers forever - and the curing process for me was around 7 days after the final coat was applied (humid PNW in April). During the curing process, near ANYHTING (including fingers) will mar the surface and cause the lining to scrape off or ruffle up. Plan for moving before starting paining (I made a stretcher thing out of 2x4's to take it from yard to garage).
I recommend applying this stuff with a brush, as rollers cannot pick up the texturizing gunk properly, or layer it effectively. After multiple coats, one of those plastic texture rollers could be used to add more finish, but I found myself pleased with the brush-stroke look. Be sure to buy a throwaway brush to apply this, though - it is impossible to get this crap out of a brush afterwards. It completely ruined the brush I used despite all my efforts to save it. RIP Brushy Brush.
Patience is key. I waited 30 mins between each of 3 coats and one day before the 4th.
Happy lining!
P.S. The sub sounds incredible XD
