With proper care, this vacuum will keep right on going strong.
I purchased this for a whopping $35 via Facebook Marketplace. The seller mentioned in the ad and repeated in person that it still worked somewhat, but didn't pick up dog hair anymore. I did a quick google search about replacing the filters, taking it apart, etc. I've never worked on a vacuum before, but for $35, I figured I had nothing to lose. When I met the seller and checked over the vacuum, it was *filthy.* I was confident I'd just gotten a bargain. After getting it home, I ordered replacement filters, then got to work taking it apart to clean it. If you do the same thing, be sure to do it outside. Trust me. Also, be prepared to work slowly if you're not very mechanically inclined. Better yet, get a friend who is and persuade them to do it. Take them out afterwards as they might need something to unwind.I spent an afternoon taking it apart, washing and cleaning various parts, then put it all back together after it dried.I quickly learned that the lifetime HEPA filter is really tricky to get at and replace. The current version of the same vacuum, now sold as the Dyson DC39 Origin, seems to have been redesigned to make replacing the HEPA filter much more user-friendly. Oh, and just a quick lesson: there are two filters. There is the washable filter that screens out the dust, etc, at the top of the canister. The air then goes through a second filter, the lifetime HEPA filter, to catch anything remaining before venting it out down in the vacuum itself. Theoretically the second filter should never need to be cleaned if the washable filter is washed monthly.I did a quick test run in the hallway outside my apartment since it was the filthiest spot I could think of immediately. It started sucking up dirt and pebbles I couldn't see. The brush head stuck to the floor like a Dyson is known to do. It grabbed up lint and hair. I scored a winner.I almost feel guilty for the bargain I got, but figure I have a Dyson now and can be part of the cool crowd. ;-)The last photo shows some of the crud the vacuum got from the floor. I only did the hallway immediately in front of my door, but you get the idea.
