Read the reviews and heed the warnings about drilling too deep too fast. I got the auger stuck twice in my clay soil and had to dig it out by hand. Don’t rock it back and forth to loosen it like did! The 4” auger bent and was unusable after the second dig out. Luckily I had bought an extra 6” auger bit which dug a better hole anyway. There is no reverse so getting stuck means digging it out. Avoid this problem by continuously drilling down and pulling up. This brings dirt out of the hole and works pretty well. I still had to use a manual post hole digger because most of the soft dirt falls back into the hole but the electric post hole digger made it a lot easier. The bits are 30 “ long so if you want to go deeper you use your manual post hole digger. Be careful about running into roots, rocks or concrete. When it meets an unmovable object it can jerk suddenly in the opposite direction and that handle is sure to hit you in the thigh or worse!
Of course, that wasn't most holes because there were plenty of rocks and roots which rock and rolled me for sure. But, if it wasn't for this auger, the whole job would've taken helluva a lot longer especially because I dug 45 holes (I'm insane I know). Even if there were rock and roots that blocked my way this auger helped loosen up the tight dirt and all the obstacles packing it.
Pro Tip #1: When drilling keep your legs as wide as possible so as to clear the diameter of the tool. That is, if you care about the family jewels and generally protecting your legs from getting bruised up. A bump here and there never hurt anyone but when you have to dig a ton of holes and when sometimes digging a hole could take up to two hours (I had some gnarly rocks/roots in my yard) you want to prevent as much self-damage as possible. When you hit a tough rock/root, this tool will not budge and it's not the fault of the tool. It's just when a powerful force meets the immovable objects the latter seems to win most of the time.
Pro Tip #2: When drilling try to go in for 5-15 seconds (depending on how much depth you are getting per dig) and pull up from the ground so as to clear the dirt from the drill bit. Doing this will seem like it takes more time but it will reduce overall effort. Unless you are awesome at deadlifting heavy things (and even then you still want to do this because I deadlift something like 385-400lb pre-COVID-19 and I found this to be helpful), you will want to reduce the amount of weight you have to pull from the ground. The drill is heavy enough.
Pro Tip #3: Once you've loosened up enough dirt, get the tool out of there and use a good 'ol clamshell post hole digger and get the loosened dirt out. This will be a lot faster and it'll allow you to get to the lowest depth to keep digging much faster/easier. Otherwise you'll be fighting through the already loosened dirt, roots, and rocks instead of being able to work through without those hindrances.
Good luck with your digging!
The down side — unlike my electric drill, and pretty much any other electric motor used to drive a bit or shaft, it has NO reverse. Why does this matter? If, as noted above, it gets hung under a root or large rock, there is no easy way to back the bit out. I’ve had it stuck and had to disengage the bit from the drive, then use a piper wrench to reverse the bit until I could spin it by hand back out of the hole.
Seems like a no-brainer that an electric auger this powerful would have a reverse. No such luck.
