Casio

With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.

Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, atomic timekeeping means the users never have to reset the time. Recently, Casio launched a series of Bluetooth watches that sync to the users cell phone to automatically update the time. Casio is always moving time forward.

Best “square” G-shock now with updated module

Best “square” G-shock now with updated module
I first bought the lighter model (5600E) to test size and feel of square gshock to have a week end watch to go to the pool, beach or do some handy work without worries since that model can be found under 50 bucks but I ended loving it and thinking it would be perfect if it was at least solar powered so I sold the “regular” one and looked for the same size and shape but with solar option.I looked also for price for the solar option and after some browsing in Amazon (better prices that official website of maker) ended with two options, the 5600U and 5610 with very similar price. Model 5610 features previous module but in my opinion a better illumination.I read in many reviews that model 5610 was not available and even if offered you could en up receiving newer 5610U model with improved functionality with language settings for day format, hour on timer and stop watch and updated time zones and world time features so I made the purchase based on price and open to the possibility of any of the 2 models 5610 or 5610U.I ended up receiving the newer version and loved it. Much better than 5600 with same look and feel. LED light is not as nice as EL light in previous model but it’s not bad at all. Newer functionality is a much welcomed update.Really recommend this watch for any occasion and all purposes. A watch with great history and personality and this is the best price I found online. Other options available for this model offer other colors, collaborations and special releases but with higher prices (20%+) so if like me you like the classic look closer to the original g-shock that started it all over 40 years ago, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible watch, can be a beater too
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019
For the past 10 years, I've thought that mechanical watches had so much charm and passion, while quartz watches were soulless devices. I picked up this watch to be a "beater" when my automatic watches weren't suitable, but I've actually grown quite fond of the GW-M5610. What's not to love about a light, small, tough-as-nails, super accurate, solar watch?

I got this watch from Amazon on April 5, 2019 (in the USA). First thing I noticed was that it did not come in the hexagonal tin box that a lot of older online reviews show, but a flimsy cardboard box with a simple display holder. At first I was annoyed, but honestly the box would have just been tucked away in storage with other watch boxes that never see any use.

After unboxing, you'll find a warranty card, a handful of manuals in various languages, and the watch in a simple plastic bag (no protective stickers on the crystal or caseback, no fancy hangtags). I immediately checked out when the last sync time was (bottom right button), which happened to be on November 1. Assuming this sync happened before it was packaged up, that meant it was sitting for 5 months in the dark, but it still showed high power (as indicated at the bottom of the display, where there's a L, M, H meter). Yay for power saving mode!

Next step was to set the timezone. The manual states that the default timezone after losing all power is Tokyo. I assumed this was what the watch would be shipped with, but mine was set to NYC by default. I'm curious if watches sent to the USA are set this way, or if someone played around with this watch. After selecting my local timezone (Pacific), it was only 2 seconds slow! I know quartz watches are accurate but that is phenomenal, especially considering the manual states +/- 15 seconds per month without a signal calibration.

Speaking of signal calibration, I've had my watch automatically sync about every other night in Seattle. I have an old Casio Waveceptor (10 years old) that never syncs anymore. I don't know if that's because it has become defective, or the GW-M5610 can pick up a weaker signal strength. Regardless, there's no need to worry about missing a few nights in a row of syncing, as it'll still be very accurate.

The caseback on mine was machined and not stamped, with crisp engraving (FYI, I removed the serial number from the image, normally found on the bottom of the caseback). As far as I know, only older models will have the stamped, rounded version. While on the wrist, it feels just as comfortable as any rounded caseback I've had.

I really like that the resin strap is already pre-rounded/pre-shaped. I've had tough, flat rubber/plastic/resin straps on other watches that were incredibly uncomfortable (I'm looking at you, SKX009). On my 6.25" wrist, the watch strap keeper is right at the end, and there's maybe 1/4" excess strap sticking out. If your wrist is smaller, you'll unfortunately have more strap sticking out, which will probably be a bit annoying.

Other reviews state that the A-EL feature didn't work on their watches, which is the auto-illumination when you tilt your wrist up. Mine works flawlessly. I'm curious if this was an issue with earlier models that has since been addressed.

The only minor annoyance I can find with this watch is the non-standard lug width/strap. I think the stock strap fits it perfectly (both in terms of comfort and aesthetics) and have no desire to change it, but it's proprietary. That being said, I'm sure it won't be hard to find a replacement strap if needed.

The GW-M5610 has a perfect blend of retro styling, useful functions, durability, comfort, and laziness (it sets itself!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful watch, excellent quality.
Reviewed in Canada on January 24, 2018
This watch is truly amazing. It has a great heft to it for the price you’re paying. Compared to the less expensive models, this is truly a great value for your dollar, and here’s why.

Quality:

This watch is built like a tank. Solid, milled stainless steel back, a very durable (albeit stiff) quality resin band. A crisp LCD display, and a pretty decent weight for a non-metal watch: 53g. Enough to know you have a piece of quality on your wrist, but still extremely light weight for every day use.

Features:

Multi-band 6 pairing and Tough Solar technology are the highlights of this watch. For $100, you’re getting a watch that never needs a battery replacement (provided you’re in an environment with good sunlight or ambient light) and never needs adjusting, as it sets itself with atomic signals anywhere in the world, making it extremely accurate to the second. Apart from this, it features more functions that are taken for granted, but absolutely vital to have. A countdown timer? Check. Stopwatch? Check. Illumination light? Check. Ability to set multiple alarms? Check. In terms of functions, this watch shines.

Durability:

As expected from Casio’s G-SHOCK line, durability is a staple in every watch they make, and this one is no exception. Adequate to 20 BARS of pressure (200m) for water, this watch will stand up to any activity involving plain water (such as swimming) easily, just don’t take it in the shower as the soaps and steam may damage the seals. It has a durable resin construction which can absorb and distribute shock around the watch, coupled with the free-floating module technology and the design of the band itself, this thing is made to take punishment like a champ.

Overall, this watch is beauty. Not for its flashiness, but because of it’s modesty. You won’t get any comments about how amazing of a watch this is, as it looks like an every day carry, but rest assured, this thing will last.

From my understanding, (may be incorrect), the country in which this watch was made in (Thailand) has the most robust and advanced watch making Casio factory, unlike the other factories they own, like the one that makes cheap models in China. You know that for the money you pay, you’re getting a quality watch made extremely well, a watch with a vast and very useful set of functions, and one that can stand the rigours of everyday life. If you’re hesitant, trust me....

Take the plunge, you will not regret it.
