Our radio station began streaming after much research into “best methods” and “least proprietary” so we could reach the most people. We purchased a “Logitech Squeezebox” internet radio for giveaway at our local community expo to celebrate the new service, and had a great response to that contest. Meanwhile, I needed something a bit more “portable” for our remotes when we're in “iffy” signal areas for FM without using a smartphone, and hoped to find a radio with good sound and nice features. I found it in this Sangean WFR-28
FM reception: quite good for reasonable distance from high powered stations, even under the blanket of our 5kw of AM and 250 watts of FM (translator) at our studios. I have not tried the FM tuner outside our blanket of RF, but can only imagine it gets even better.
Sound: Excellent for a small radio! Perfect for bedside, kitchen, wherever you may have previously enjoyed stations on a PC but don't want to be tied to the laptop or PC for listening! It has settings for equalization so you can tailor the sound, including separate bass, treble and even the old “loudness” contour on/off. Very nice. No complaints on sound. It's not a hugely powerful amplifier, but more than enough for background in a normal sized room, especially with the EQ set for more than “flat”.
Versatility: If the volume is not enough, there's a “line out” 1/8” stereo jack, and what's really neat is this comes separate from the headphones out! You can feed an external amp and enjoy full stereo from internet stations independent of the volume and headphones. Also adding to the versatility is the stereo “line in” which renders in nice “mono” on the radio's speaker and this is selectable from the “mode” button, so no constant plugging and unplugging is needed! This is a nice change from many radios offered these days where the audio source is switched by the physical plugging-in of a device, and this also means longer life from the “aux in” jack.
Display: Easily readable, while adjustable for contrast, I've left this at factory preset.
Presets: Like most radios, dedicated to the “function” at the time. For instance, all the FM's are at once, all the “internet” ones are at once, cannot intermix function presets. (this would be a nice update in software, someday.) You can, however through the online registration add new stations easily, and can store them in your own nameable banks, like “international” or “local” or “Michigan” and still put them in as presets from each of those categories!
FM antenna: Nice “bold” diameter at bottom, well made.
Time update: Automatic through FM (limited areas, assumed..since this would be an RDS service) but did well on our “normal” network automatically and quickly when turned on!
Not yet tested:
USB audio player with protected top-mounted plug in (rubber seals out day to day dirt)....
Rechargeable batteries. It has this option for NiMH and built in charger. Charges through AC adapter automatically.
Setup: takes a bit of patience, but once you get the feel of when to use the “tuning knob” on the side and when to use “forward/backward” buttons, adding your secure network info takes only a few minutes, but needs to be done for each network, even if the passwords are the same. (not really any different than a standard PC in this regard.)
The unit held its memory of stations even with no power and no batteries, so once its set, no worries of transporting without batteries or reasonable periods without power. (longest time without power here is one day, by the way and all memory was held.)
Hoping for long life out of this unit, and will be getting the batteries to have for times when no AC is available.
Overall: Excellent “first” and very versatile FM radio with 'net capabilities. GREAT to have for travel if your local station is on the web, or if you work in a place with limited reception of FM signals.
The Sangean radio has some striking differences from the Mondo which I will try to describe. Some pro's on the Sangean radio are that you can use your own batteries in it, whereas with the Mondo, you have to purchase a separate battery pack for it. The Sangean will operate on either conventional or rechargeable NIMH D batteries, and will also re-charge the NIMH batteries while plugged in. This is very convenient, and gives the Sangean more flexibility.
The Sangean radio has good WI-FI reception. I did a side by side comparison between the Sangean and the Grace Mondo by walking around the house and just outside with them to test their range. The Sangean was clearly more stable with much less drop outs and buffering. I also noticed that when the Sangean did buffer or loose signal, it was much more likely to recover, whereas the Mondo tended to give up entirely at times.
The biggest advantage of the Sangean over the Mondo in my view is that it handles Podcasts nicely. You can stop/pause/forward and rewind a Podcast, whereas on the Mondo you cannot. That is a real drag if you are listening to a Podcast and either need to stop for a moment or missed something, you need to start it over or give it up. Further, the Sangean seems to receive many more Podcasts, (at least the types I like, such as Medical stuff, science, and automotive Podcasts).
The Sangean uses the Frontier Silicon Portal, whereas the Mondo uses Reciva. Reciva is probably bigger overall, but for me, I love Podcasts and prefer the Sangean variety offered and the functionality of such.
Of Significance is that with the Sangean, when you go to set up your stations on the Frontier Silicon Website with a computer, you can actually listen/hear them first before adding them to your list that shows up on your radio, but with the Mondo/Reciva set up- you cannot listen to any of the stations on the computer, making choices tricky. I verified this with the nice staff at Grace, and it is true that while on the computer you cannot sample the stations, weird but true apparently. This results in wasted time and making lots of changes on the website for Reciva. To clarify, you can listen by browsing with either radio, but you cannot add stations while listening, so you need to use a computer to set it up your stations, but with the Mondo, you cannot hear it first when on the computer and setting up your stations. It is sad that you cannot set up stations permanently on either radio, (other than on the few presets) like you could on some of the older Logitech radios.
You can allegedly add stations and Podcasts on either radio, but it is not easy, as I was only successful one time in doing this and it was by luck I picked the exact right digits. It requires selecting the proper RSS or URL feeds, and it is probably best to let your 8 year old do it for you. I have not seen good directions on how to do it, but apparently it can be done on both models.
CONS: The Sangean does not have apps, such as Pandora, and the screen is small. Here the Mondo is better, as Pandora and others can be nice to have- so this is personal taste. I tend to listen to Pandora on other units, (including the Mondo) and the Mondo does a good job with the apps.
The Sangean screen is OK, but small. The Mondo's much larger color screen is nicer.
The Sangean has only 5 presents, (5 for regular FM, 5 for Internet radio). The Mondo has 10 for internet radio using a shift key.
BOTH radios may cut out if used near a microwave oven that is in operation. This is very frustrating if you want to listen while in the kitchen using the microwave, (this is more of a problem with the Mondo). You can move them around and usually get a signal, but it takes time, so placement is touchy if the oven is running. I think this is due to the radios using a 2.4 frequency, as does the microwave, and I found this interesting as I had not read about this in other reviews and it is a significant issue with Wi-Fi. if you plan on a kitchen based listening situation.
SOUND: The sound quality between these two radios is close and, both are good. The Sangean seems to handle louder volume a bit better while the Mondo at lower levels seems clearer, (the Mondo has an added tweeter which helps the sound a bit, especially lower end voices, but both sound nice). You can tailor the sound of both nicely on the menu. Hint: With the Sangean, turn OFF Loudness, then boost bass/treble to taste-this clears it up nicely and puts the sound close to that of the Mondo.
CONCLUSION: The Sangean clearly wins as to handling Podcasts. I also really like the built in FM Band with RDS on the Sangean, (this radio will actually show you the song/title/info playing if the FM station you are listening to has this feature). I really like having the option to use my own batteries.
To be fair, I did send back the first Sangean WFR-28 due to poor Wi-Fi reception. (I think this was a fluke based on my lengthy history with many other Sangean radios over the years, all have been solid and never failed over many years). My first Sangean unit was weaker than my Mondo, but the replacement unit is great, with the Wi-Fi being clearly better than the Mondo.
Both radios have a nice remote app for I-pods, I-phones, and Android phones which work nicely. They are free. You can control nearly every function, such as searching, volume, changing pre-sets, it is nice. On the Mondo, I discovered you can have 22 Pre-sets, (instead of 10 on the radio itself, and that tickled me. I also discovered I could operate another CC internet radio with it).
The display on the Mondo is clearly better, the sound is close with the slight edge going to the Mondo. I like the feel and build quality on the Sangean, I like some of the options such as Pandora on the Mondo. The Sangean has better Wi-Fi range, yet the Mondo can be hardwired directly to the internet with their separate optional adapter, a nice option to have if either in a weak Wi-Fi spot where a hard connection is available, or in case you go somewhere without any Wi-Fi or want to turn off your own. If using your own batteries is important, and of being able to swap them out due to long battery listening times, the Sangean may be your best option.
It would be nice to combine the best features of both these radios, with the biggest differences being control of Podcasting on the Sangean, and of Pandora being on the Mondo. Either way, I think it is hard to go wrong with either radio, depending on your needs. I hope this was helpful. In case it is not obvious, I really like radios!

A Lot of country music, podcasts, literary dramas, and intellectual discussions fill my room when I return from work to be with myself. Thanks Sangean.
With this radio you can:
- listen the FM , Internet radio , spotify if you have a paid account, any audio stream from your network.
- you can connect any audio output to the AUX port on the radio - I do it to listen spotify free from my tablet.
- the radio use alkaline or rechargeable batteries
- the speaker is very good, clear voice; no problem to listen it in home; I did not tested it outside.
The set up for Sangean was intuitive and straightforward. I didn't have to consult the manual at all for the wifi and auto date/clock sync set up. What I like is the side wheel that makes letter entry and selection easy. There are 5 preset buttons to save my favorite stations and its easy to save them, just long press to save, no more fumbling with menus.
I have also tried streaming my spotify music to the radio, it works flawlessly, eliminating the need for another bluetooth speaker at home.
There is the occasional wifi network error during new station selection that goes away at the second try. I was also initially worried about not having access to the 10000 + stations after reading the older reviews. I'm glad to say that it is not an issue now.
The sound is crispier than my old radio. It sits in my dining room and the volume set at 13 is enough to fill the room with music. I have not encountered any lags in internet music streaming. I have not tried it for FM as the radio stations in Singapore are crappy.
Overall this radio is a great upgrade for me and great mood lifter :).
1) This thing absolutely eats batteries! I got about 12-14 hrs of play from the 4 D-size cells that it needs. I tried a few times with best quality alkaline cells etc and it was always the same.
2) There is a bug in the radio software that is fairly minor but still somewhat irritating. Here it is; when on Wi-Fi the radio can take a while starting to first startup and then negotiate the connection. During that time, the radio can time out, blank the display and sit there silently doing nothing - and it will stay that way. If you touch the tuner or volume controls, the radio suddenly seems to come out of sleep and start playing the perfectly tuned channel. Minor but annoying in the morning when you are on the run and want to just turn on the radio and leap in the shower.
I would have given it 4 stars but after I changed over to rechargeable batteries I am getting about 14hrs off power and the radio recharges the batteries fully after being plugged in with no dramas at all.
So yeah, go ahead and buy one.. there are a couple of good youtube reviews out there if you are still concerned.
