Main rack components are very good, but had to replace some bolts and straps are inadequate
    4 Stars
Main rack components are very good, but had to replace some bolts and straps are inadequate
Overall I am satisfied, from sturdiness to value-for-money, especially given the price of name brand alternatives. Comments here are after 2 weeks of use, spring 2021.The racks are successfully carrying a pair of 14" Perception sea kayaks (appx 55lbs each) on top of an 2006 Lexus RX SUV.The "J" part of these racks... the workhorse component to the system... seem to be solid. Minor to moderate gripes below to help you make a buying choice.Gripe 1 - The foamy, anti-scratch/anti-gouge covers to the J bar could cover MORE of the J bar in my opinion. Getting a heavy kayak high enough for a roof rack inevitably involves some collisions and scraping. Minor quibble.Gripe 2 - These J bars don't fold down, and you can definitely hear significant wind noise when driving around with the empty racks still attached. Short of a very expensive fold-down rack, probably not much you can do about that.Gripe 3 - The clasping bits that attach the J bar to your car's crossbar are unrefined and clumsy. This won't be a big bother if you have a garage or driveway or safe neighborhood and can leave them on all the time. Frequent on and off in a city environment, such as mine, however, is a hassle. I am not sure other brands have a better system for quick attachment, but this part of the rack definitely doesn't feel state of the art. It works, but it's crude.Gripe 3.1 - The bottom clamping plate *should* be rubberized since it will inevitably bump and scratch your roof while installing... but it is not. Not a dealbreaker, just a 'you get what you pay for' realization. My car is older so I'm not stressed about it, but if I had a nicer car I sure would be.Gripe 3.2 - Two bolts pass through the base of the Jbar assembly and cinch a bottom plate to your car's crossbar, fastened tightly by a hand-twist nut on each bolt. That bolt was too long for my car: Once the weight of the kayak hit the car's crossbars, the protruding extra bolt below the hand-twist nut gouged the vehicle roof. Replacing this bolt with a shorter replacement wasn't too big a deal (see photos for the exact replacement I chose: M8 1.25 x 50 stainless steel) but it did take an extra trip to the dreaded big box hardware store. Note that the collar of the original bolt has a square shape to lock it into the base of the J bar assembly, thereby preventing it from rotating when tightening the thumb bolt. The replacement I found has 6 sides and won't lock into place the same way, a moderate annoyance. You may have better luck with service/assistance at your local hardware store than I did to find a more exact match. Or maybe you have the tools to cut the provided bolts.Gripe 4 - Final reality check are the included straps. The strap and cinch buckle are inadequate for anything than a gentle cross-town run. Budget for separate 1.5" straps with a quality cinch buckle (e.g. NRS straps). And, dont forget to get fore and aft cords which don't seem to be included in many/any other racks out there, and certainly aren't here. Yes, the included straps are functionally serviceable, at least for a few uses, but I wouldn't dream of taking them out on a highway journey!Again, bottom line, a great alternative to more expensive name brand options. Just be sure to plan for some hardware adjustments plus additional straps and cords.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive & Reliable
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022
It's been over 5 years since we bought these racks, and they've worked great; although they were 50% cheaper when I bought them. They are easy to mount and have been perfectly stable during our use (and they do get a lot of use!) They have a couple of minor issues, but everything does.

On strapping down your boats: They come with straps that some here say work great - I wouldn't know I never used them, but whatever you use, keep this in mind: the boats will become torpedoes if you get in a collision. The impact will flex your boats and they WILL fly out of whatever strap you have across it. The only solution is to tie them front to back as well. I hate having ropes come down over the windshield, so I tie each end back to the roof rack itself which does the same thing more compactly. I also use ratchet straps across the tops to hold 2 boats down, but each boat also needs to be independently tied down! Notice, I don't tie the boats to the racks, but to the roof mounts on the car. This removes a lot of bounce stress on the arms and racks since the boats are not anchored to the roof which puts constant pressure down on the racks. This has worked perfectly for numerous interstate trips of varying distances, including from VA to the FL Keys & back.

Now, the bad news - on our Subaru Outback, the cross bars are a bit wider than the base of the mount so they don't sit straight. I typically cock them in the direction of the curve of the boat if I can. The hand crank heads that sit over the tightening nuts didn't work well. I ditched those and keep a ratchet wrench in the car and use that to tighten the racks to the roof crossbars. Lastly, one of the bolt posts has broken the plastic mold that keeps it from spinning when you tighten the nuts. I've milked it a few more times, but this means I need to replace the rack. I'll probably upgrade to a nicer rack now that I have a bit more money and bit less strength in my back to be hoisting my kayaks up on the roof. But all in all, I've been very happy with these racks.
