I also read that some folks said it doesn't move more than just a dusting and that my be true for them. As with any snow blower, gas or electric, you can't wait until you have snow over the top of your blower and expect it to work efficiently. I just used mine for the first time and I cleared 1700 sq feet of deck. I had some drifts with 8 inches and some areas with only 2-3 inches. I did not have any problems, I just took my time. It's not a wet heavy snow so that may be the difference.
I like how it throws the snow far enough to get it away from the house. Additionally, the way it is designed I can lay it back a little and throw it high and away. When I get close to the handrails I can pick the handle up and throw it through the handrails. It's easy enough I can get right along my house and the handrails (running parallel). You do have to be careful at a perpendicular approach because the scoop will strike the house or handrail if you are at certain angles. But that said, it's sturdy and didn't break.
It's about like using a heavy vacuum. I do wish there was a trigger lock on it. When it is running the trigger is pretty sensitive and doesn't have to travel far for it to cut off.
I would definitely buy it again. It's light enough for a lady to operate and it would make a great gift for the husbands who have to clear the decks and sidewalks.
First time I used this I was impressed. It grabbed snow as deep as 6 inches and threw it 15 to 20 feet. It works very well.
Pros:
Ease of use, the 2 handle design works well. I have carpal tunnel in my left wrist, and adjusting the handle to a stable/comfortable angle was awesome. It relieved the strain and the 2 handles also helped relieve back pressure/strain.
Power. You push this along at an angle towards you so that it is slanting upwards towards you. I was able to push this thing through pretty thick heavy snow and even into some ice chunks and it picked everything up that was loose and threw it. It also broke up some of the ice that had started to form.
Cons:
The knob on the lower handle broke the first time I used this. Again, I have carpal tunnel and had to adjust the handle a few time to find the right angle & height for me. On one of my adjustments the knowb just fell apart. The plastic is brittle and it just disintegrated on me. I was wearing heavy gloves and was still able to use/tighten it but I foresee a time where I will have to break out a pair of pliers to loosen/tighten the screw.
Snow only blows in one direction > straight away from you (ignoring wind conditions). This is more of a wish than a con, but it would be nice if there was rudder/louver system that could be used to direct the flow even a little. It can be hard to strategically get the angles needed to remove the snow without it A) blowing back on something you just cleared B) blowing against a car or home C) blowing into an area that you will need to clear and knowing it will be that much harder to clear it now.
No speed adjust. There were times when I only wanted to blow the snow a few feet instead of 15 feet to prevent it from going onto or against something.
Overall, for the price this is an OK product. Handle knob needs some work for sure and I might have spent a little more on a product that had a louver and speed adjustment.
1. The description clearly states that it has snow depth restrictions...if the snow is deeper than that make two or three passes---I used the same motion that I use with my vacuum cleaner and cleared about 9" deep snow in two passes.
2. The cord kept coming undone--all I can say is-it's a corded power tool...... Tie a loose knot in the cord like you would for any other power tool--problem solved.
3. The cord gets in the way...anyone who has ever run a vacuum cleaner knows how to keep the cord out of the way. If you don't want to deal with the cord then buy a gas powered one. Think vacuum cleaner--machine in one hand cord in the other...flip it behind you as go. problem solved.
4. It only blows snow in one direction and blows back in your face. Yup... It's a shovel, not a snow blower with a rotating shoot. Would you spit into the wind? Shift directions. It's common sense
5. Throwing power. I found that it threw the snow about the same distance as my snowblower. It does only throw in one direction so yes, to get across the two car driveway you are clearing the last foot or so twice but still considerably less work than a regular shovel.
6. Some have said that it's too heavy.....the machine itself is not heavy---but you're still clearing snow and snow is heavy. Any healthy adult would find the Snow Joe to be much less back breaking than a regular shovel. If someone thinks that clearing snow with the Snow Joe is still too too heavy then it's time to hire the neighbor kid to do the snow removal for you.
7. It's too difficult to keep the button pushed... I don't understand that at all. I had no problems what-so ever. You just have to keep your thumb on one button which is plenty large enough to feel. And if you accidentally let go you don't need to do anything more than pull the trigger--it takes more energy to restart my lawnmower when I accidentally let go of the bar,,
Overall it turned a 30-45 minute manual back-breaking job into a 10 minute "didn't-even-break-a-sweat" job. I would highly recommend Snow Joe as a replacement to your regular shovel.
I can't say anything about durability as I've only used it once. I can say that for the price, if it only gets me through one season it's still less money than paying someone to do it for me.
Top reviews from other countries
I expected this thing to be weak and break easily, but I watched some videos of it being used and was impressed. Decided to go for it and so far it's impressed me!
Definitely recommend!
Cons? You can’t control the pitch or angle the snow is thrown so cleaning stairs for example - you are throwing the snow to the side which might be I to your driveway or neighbor’s property. And because the snow is projected so high onto the air it may be blown back if the snow is light and the wind is in your face. But for the price you can’t expect perfection.
Bottom line this thing is light, powerful and easy to use. It’s not a snowblower substitute but for walks, decks, even smaller driveways this thing will do the job.
All of the parts except for the auger axle are plastic, so if you hit anything hard, you'll chew up your blade a bit. Probably won't harm performance much as long as you don't do too often. At the end of the day, this unit isn't that expensive, and if I get 4-5 seasons out of it I'll consider it money well spent. Currently 2 years in without difficulty.
I think I should've spent the extra $60 or so for the higher-end version with the adjustable duct for the snow, this model only throws snow directly forward, so at times you're re-blowing snow you've already cleared if you have a long driveway. If you can angle to the sides, that won't happen.
