Product Description
Product Description
Built for use with impact tools, these TEKTON 1/2 in. drive deep impact sockets effortlessly break free rusty suspension and exhaust bolts, quickly remove stuck lug nuts, and loosen crank bolts with ease. TEKTON impact sockets efficiently transfer torque from impact wrench to fastener, loosening the most stubborn nuts and bolts. Made from high-strength chrome vanadium steel, our impact sockets are more resistant to drive end round out than standard impact sockets, resulting in a longer useable life. TEKTON impact sockets meet or exceed ANSI performance standards. The high-torque, 6-point socket grips the broad, flat sides of nuts and bolts, not just the corners, so there's no need to worry about stripping fastener head or damaging socket. An extra-deep broach enables you to access the entire length of fasteners. Even in low light, the high-contrast, permanent laser etched size markings are easy-to-read. The customized red TEKTON case can be stored in a tool chest or carried to your job site. Molded size markings keeps set organized and identifies any missing sockets.

I love pretty much everything about these sockets.
The molded case is great... it has its own markings so you know which sockets go in which slot (even though its pretty easy for a Metric set since they just go in numerical order). And one thing I really appreciate is that the case is no larger than it had to be. There is just enough room for the sockets... no excess gaps in between each one, or around the perimeter. No more wasted space in the tool cabinet.
The sockets themselves have an awesome matte black finish. So, for someone like me with OCD, I don't have to wipe them down every time I use them because they don't show fingerprints, etc. I also LOVE the large print laser etching on the side. It makes picking up the right socket that much faster. Another key factor for me in purchasing this set.... NO SKIPPED SIZES! Again, I'm pretty OCD, so there is nothing worse for someone like me than having incomplete sets or collections. Tools are no different.
I've used these sockets on my 24" breaker bar, as well as my air impact gun, and I have not had a single issue with cracking, rounding or anything of the sort. I would not hesitate to recommend these sockets. Tremendous value.
First Chrome Vanadium- Chrome vanadium is a very widely used metal in most hand tools, most specifically, in wrenches. This is the case for several reasons; first it incredible over all strength. This metal is very, very rigid. So it is suitable to use in tools like wrenches because it won't flex or deform when torqued on a bolt. In addition to its very rigid properties, it's cheap and relatively easy to make. So even the most cheap tool brands can use it, and since it is still a perfect material, snap on uses it in its hand wratches. So what are the pros and cons? Pros.....Like I said it is very rigid, so when used with impacts it transfers the impacting force of the tool very well. So this makes it an ideal socket for use on rusty bolts. This is because rusty nuts and bolts can snap if they are tried to be removed with strait torque. So impacting tools are used, these work very well because it knocks lose the rust and gets the nut out. So cr-v works nicely for rusty sockets because maximum impact is delivered. So why do some crack? We'll its because they are so rigid. The thin construction on the harbor freight sockets cracks due to the rigid material of cr-v. These are not thin, I really like this set, they are thick and I don't feel as though they will crack.
Chrom Moly - this material is almost exclusively in impact sockets. This is because it's durability in the impact application. This is because of its ideal ratio of flex and rigidity. Impacts need to deliver an impacting force to deliver their special sort of torque. But rigid materials, like cr-v, tend to crack if they flex to much, so materials like cr-m are used. Disadvantages include the following; they are not as good at rusty nut and bolts. That is due to the flex, so the impacts are not transferred as well. So these are a little, I mean a little tougher on rusty fasteners. So, why are more expensive impact sockets usually made of cr-m. We'll firstly cr-m is mare expenesive to make than cr-v. Also, cr-m usually lasts longer in impacts that cr-v. But in these sockets I don't think you will have any problems. This is the most complete set I have seen ever. Some 300 dollar sets are not as complete. In addition I mentioned how cr-v may crack. These won't. They are very thick and even if they do they have a life time warranty. (I have heard great things about Tektons coustomer service.) I would recommend these for the once and a while mechanic. That's what these are going to be doing in my garage at home. My work sockets are Mac, and they are cr-m. So in short I would recommend these a lot. They are great quality, great price, great sets, great box, and great buy. Get these, you won't be sorry.
OK, back to the sockets—construction is good, the walls are nice and thick (as you’d expect), I love the easy-to-read laser etching, and I also like the fact that they are chrome vanadium. I’m no material scientist, but I’m pretty good at Googling stuff, and I’ve learned that chro-v is harder (less ductile) than chro-m and transfers more energy from your impact gun to the fastener. Another reviewer, Id72, has a nice comparison on the two metals and explains it well. Basically, if you’re a professional mechanic and use impact sockets every day, all day, you’re going to wear them out (both chro-v and chro-m). Plain and simple, tools wear out. In my case, I’m not a professional mechanic and I’ll use these a few times a month and I’d like to have as much energy transfer from my impact gun into the fastener as possible so I’m very happy with these. I’ve watched a video where someone was trying to remove a stubborn bolt and he hammered on it with an impact socket and it wouldn’t budge, he then switched to a heavier socket (same size socket, just more mass) and the bolt zipped right off. I know it’s not an apples to apples comparison regarding chro-v or chro-m, but it does show that energy transfer to the fastener makes a difference.
I usually don’t mention the cases that tools come in, but I like to keep my impact sockets in their case if possible. These come with a very nice sturdy case that will fit nicely in your tool drawer. It latches securely and you can take these with you help out a friend if needed and won’t have to worry about sockets falling out.
Bottom line: This is a nice impact socket set at a very reasonable price and I am happy with my purchase.
Top reviews from other countries
1. Sturdy build quality with thick durable wall. It's made of chrome vanadium for cost-cutting.
2. Deep broach. Some may not like this feature but this allows the nut/ bolt to rotate inside without having the socket move outward much.
3. No skipping of sizes is the best part (10-24mm). This is my primary reason of buying this Tekton model because buying individual skipped sizes is too costly than buying a set as these sockets come under specialty tools category.
4. The sockets have notches on both 6-point & 4-point corners to prevent rounding off of bolts, ratchet.
5. You can use these on both your impact & hand tools.
Cons :
1. Broach depth for 10-13mm sockets is not as deep as 14-24mm sockets.
2. The 10-12mm sockets wall is crazy thick. I wish they were slightly thinner as Grey Pneumatic's versions for clearance.
3. The markings are not stamped. My set got few scratches out of the box & it was clear the scratched etched markings were not clearly visible. I can safely say if you carelessly rub or let it roll around, the markings will wear out faster.
4. Hinge of the blow mold lid is flimsy.
5. Only one retention hole. But most impact sockets have generally one.
6. Finishing is tolerable.
Conclusion :
Asides from the overkill 10-12mm sockets wall & etched markings, I'm content. It's a good buy over truck tools at budget price.
Note :
1. Make sure to lubricate the hole & its inner surrounding, retention ball of your extension/ ratchet with oil etc before inserting. This should reduce friction & wearout of the retention ball. <This can be misunderstood with the other sense>
2. Some people worry using impact sockets over chrome when using with hand tools - Unless clearance is your problem or you have superpower, its 100% fine. Also the bending effect of impact sockets with calibration when torquing is negligible.
3. 10-12mm wall is thick because its made of chrome vanadium. Wall would be thinner if it was chrome molybdenum which can bend more than Cr-V. So clearance can be an issue. But at this size range, a 3/8" is the ideal size, 1/2" is overkill except for emergency purposes. Get a chrome 3/8" set for clearance problems.
