Important Info About Our Design of Throwing Axe

Blade Edge Requires Sharpening for Uses Other Than Throwing

Head May Come Loose

Different Sizes for Different Folks

Blade Edge Requires Sharpening for Uses Other Than Throwing

Each head is designed for axe throwing which doesn't require a super sharp blade edge. For uses other than throwing such as chopping and splitting, these blades may require additional sharpening.

Friction Fit Head Design

You will likely experience the separation of the axe head from the handle if the head or handle hit the target incorrectly.

Other products use a set screw to attached the head to handle. We believe a set screw doesn't offer a true and proper fit and it compromises the handles integrity.

Thus, we use a friction fit design that requires friction to hold the head and handle. Proper fit is required for this design to work correctly. If your head and handle separate frequently without reason, it is likely the handle needs to be sanded a bit where the fit is wrong.

Different Sizes Are Available for Younger Throwers

We offer smaller sizes of throwing axes for younger throwers or for those who get sore throwing our standard size hatchets.

You can search all our throwing products using the brand name "Thrower Supply [insert product type here (i.e., axe, knife, sheath, handle, etc...)]"

About Our Axe Handles

Straight Grain

Appalachian Hardwood

Handles Made in USA

Premium A Grade Hickory Axe Handles

Straight Grain Handles

Grain refers to the direction of the "veins" of the wood. Wood will split easier if you are cutting in the direction of the grain. When chopping wood you try to cut along the grain to split the wood. If you were to use cross grain handles it just wouldn't make sense for throwing (they would break much easier). By selling only straight grain handles we are offering you the most durable handles available.

Verified Sustainable Wood

Hickory Is Ergonomically Better For Comfort And Stress Reduction

Hickory logs produce the best handles and are selected for their heavy weight, and straight grain.

The U.S. Forest Products Lab has found no difference in white or red hickory's strength. Therefore, the best hickory handles may be white, red or a mixture of both.

Hickory is a natural shock absorber and has excellent strength for tool handles.

USA Made Hardwood

American Hickory is the most sought after wood material to use for your axes and tomahawks. All the premium Swedish and German axe makers import American Hickory for their handles and proudly advertise it. We selected Hickory because it will take more abuse than maple or birch or ash. And on top of that, it is much more affordable.

Premium A Grade Quality

Top quality hardwood means you can throw axes longer without the handle breaking.

Each handle is then sanded smooth and tumble waxed with a light coat of bees wax. This makes the grip software and extends the life of the wood.

*Slight variance in handle size may occur and some heads may require light work with sandpaper for the perfect fit.

After reading so many negative reviews after the fact of purchasing this hawk I was hoping I could put a review to turn the tables but I don’t feel as if I can .. I didn’t have as many cracks and bad welds as I see so frequently in these reviews but I did have some sloppy welds from the eye to the bit as well as a nasty crack basically in the center of the bit from the blade to the eye itself and there is in fact a gouge in it ... it almost looks as if someone took an angle grinder to it for no apparent reason... I should have just stuck with the cold steel hawks being as I have several and have never had any issues and never had to do anything more than sand the handle a bit to seat the head properly. I also assumed it was going to be a smaller hawk being as it came up when I searched “mouse hawk” ... and the suggested sheath for it fits sloppy and loose ... if you were thinking of getting this I suggest A more known company such as CRKT Cold Steel Condor etc. I’ve found they’re on top of their quality control more so than this company . The minor TLC you’ll have to show any of those hawks is nothing in comparison to what I would have to do to make this “safe” to use.

This was my first Hawk purchase, specifically for throwing.
You will see a couple complaints that are misfounded:
1. Head keeps falling down the handle.
A. This is called a drop head axe and is designed to behave this way,(this is designed for throwing) all you have to do is tap the head back down to the end of the handle or or "sling" the head back to the end, where the wedge shape of the handle holds it in place.
2. the blade not being very sharp
A. Throwing axes should not have a sharp blade, sharp narrow blades dull quicker and chip easier causing bigger issues when throwing.

You are getting a throwing Axe with this guy, it is what it is designed for and it does it well, I won my very first league placing first with it. The throwing style can be a bit different to heavier axes, but it works well!

For the money this is a great throwing tomahawk. Good balance and great length handle. It may not be the most beautiful hawk on the market. However if you are going to throw a hawk a lot, and let inexperienced throwers use it, it is going to get beat up. The handle is going to get chipped and broken. So you don't need a good looking hawk for throwing. If you want a really nice looking hawk, get one of the beauties from Condor Tool and Knife.
The blade comes pretty dull, but that can be desirable for throwing. A thin sharp edge is more likely to chip and bend when you miss the target. In about 10 minutes I was able to put a decent edge on it with my bench stone.
The replacement handles available from the same vendor fit very nicely.

I've bought a lot of axes via Amazon lately, and this one is sort of my favorite. I say 'sort of' and only gave it 4 stars because, in truth, this is a pretty crude piece of wood and metal. However, it is that very crudeness that lends itself to my purpose, that being living history. The others I've bought were from Cold Steel, which are fine implements, but they bear all the hallmarks of factory manufacture. They're too perfect. This thing? It's ugly, and doesn't bother with the stupid hex pins Cold Steel uses to fix their axe heads in place. If you'e ever give those a swing, you know they're worthless. The pin goes and you do a friction fit.

The other reason I have to give it 4 stars is that the axe and handle fit were atrocious. I could see daylight through the gaps. However, a little epoxy putty and some hemp twine wrapped 'round it, and it's good to go.

I agree with another reviewer. It is hand forged, but you can see 2 separate pieces of steel around the eye hole of the axe. I understand that the handle should come off if improperly thrown, but the eye is set to fit the handle, all but moderately. The axe head periodically comes loose when using it as a chopping tool for wood/branches. The metal is fairly soft and easy to sharpen. I didn't understand the edge profile when I receive dit. One face of the axe was concave and the other was convex. The edge of the the axe was almost not straight and fairly dull. I would still buy it again at the end of the day, but I wish those aspects were more improved. As this axe becomes more popular, people will become more nit-picky about these aspects of the axe.

This is a very easy to use axe, that I have thrown enough times to already go through 1 target. The hand has yet to break (but has come off a few times, as they said it would). I did have to run my whetstone over it a few times though, as it was dull, even by throwing axe standards.

Shortly after receiving this item I was also sent an email from the vendor, asking if I had any issues with my axe, and providing me with some usesage and care information.

Can't say anything negatiove about this transaction.

This is my second throwing hawk. I've had the first one for about 10 years, it has thousands of throws behind it and is still a fantastic throwing hawk. This one being reviewed here is not much better than garbage.

The finish on the steel head is terrible, the inside that contacts the handle is very rough and unfinished and quickly started destroying the wooden handle. I had to spend quite a bit of time with a metal file to take the sharp rough edges off it. The wooden handle didn't come close to fitting the head, I had to spend quite a bit of time sanding that to shape it correctly to fit the head. There is no edge whatsoever on the axe and that took an hour with a file and a stone to get a medium edge on it. Finally, after all that, I was ready to throw it. Huge disappointment. It just doesn't feel balanced. I throw the two axes one after the other. I cannot miss with the older one. I cannot hit, or rather make stick, the new one. It will not stick in the wood when the other one has no problem. Upon closer inspection there are some issues that might be causing this: the metal around the handle is significantly thicker on this one compared to the older one so more of the head weight is to the back, not up near the edge. I thing this significantly affects the balance in a negative way. Also there is a noticeable bend in the blade. I don't know if it came this way, or if it resulted from throwing. Either way it is unacceptable.

Don't waste your money.

I got three of the polished steel version. Throws great. They came dull but seems like that was on purpose given folks may like that done a certain way. A file and stone handled that in fairly short order. Fit and finish of the handles on par with others tomahawks I’ve thrown. Eventually the handles do break and the axe head loosens but that is just part of it when teaching people to throw.

I was like i only own 1 throwing axe I live with 4 other people.. so ok. Now I own 10. There a lil light weight for my triplets. I know right. But there 12 the girls have a bit of an issue getting it to stick. But it does work I put a slightly better edge on them. So that seems to help. For not really needing 10 of these. There great.
