After reading the other reviews (which were mixed but seemed more favorable than not) I decided to order this frother for my wife.
I should have known there was a problem when the email I received from Cuissential gave instructions on how to contact them about defective units.
We received the unit, washed the end off, put batteries in as per instructions, and when I depressed the switch, I was greeted with this nice "whirring" sound and what seemed to be a pretty strong little device. "Nice!" I thought. I'll make my wife something fancy in the morning!
Next morning, I ground our beans and, while they were steeping in the press, got the creamer and my new frother. Placed it into the creamer, depressed the button, and whirring commenced. For about 15 seconds. "Hmm" I thought. Pressed switch again, then again to activate. "Whir, grind gnmggjgn." And then nothing. Holding the switch down sometimes would make it come to life, but for just a moment.
Contacted them because of the handy instructions on how to deal with a defective unit, and a week later had another Cuissential frother.
Put the batteries in, depressed the switch, and was greeted with a gyrating and a growl, and then silence. Nothing will bring the second one back on even for a moment. Tried new batteries, making sure they are making contact, pressing the switch at various pressures - nothing.
In short, I would recommend that you look somewhere else for a milk frother. This one looks nice and feels nice, but is not much more than a blue decorative item.
UPDATE: Andy from Cuissential contacted me and informed me that there had been a manufacturing problem with some of the earlier models, and sent yet another replacement. When I received it, the packaging and look was the same, but after having used this new one now for several weeks it would seem that they have in fact figured out the problems. This new one does everything it is supposed to do and then some.
The power is significant, and the foam it produces rivals coffee shop quality. I have changed my rating to reflect the new reality of this much-improved design.
UPDATE May 2014: We have been using the frother for a year now, and after the initial production problems were lined out, the little frother just simply works. We have experienced none of the initial issues, and are still using the original set of batteries. I've updated my classification to "5 stars" to reflect the quality of this unit.
I got this to mix my hair color, which comes in powder form and is mixed with warm water. For precision application--instead of just squeezing it out of the bottle--and to minimize drips--using a frother is recommended. I originally used one ordered from the hair color supplier, but it broke and I used a succession of other cheap frothers--two from Ikea and one other very similar to it, all very like my first one, each of which broke, eventually--usually because I dropped it trying to get the batteries in or out. One of the things I particularly like about this one is that it's much easier to get the batteries in and out of it, since the top slides off completely and slides back in easily, instead of the hinged design of others I've used that makes the back of the cover intrude into the battery compartment when it's opened. This one also seems sturdier: it has a slightly longer and noticeably thicker shaft and sturdier-looking construction, but time will tell. It seems to have a more powerful motor than the others, too. It works quickly and makes a very smooth froth. It also has the button on the top, so I can lower the handle part way into the plastic mixing bottle without having it turn itself off. I can't quite get to the bottom of the bottle, though, and therefore ended up pouring the mixture into the bowl and frothing it there, which worked okay, but not as well as it would in something deeper and narrower for several reasons. This isn't a strike against it, since I'm using it "off-label," so to speak. I may try to find some other vessel for mixing, perhaps dedicating a large mug to the purpose--ceramic might also work better than plastic, something that hadn't occurred to me before. I'm not crazy about the feel of the rubberized handle, but that's just personal preference, too. The material and the shape do make it easy to grip. The foam itself didn't seem very sturdy, but it might do better with less water. I made a larger batch than usual and I also usually measure slightly less water than the basic "recipe" calls for to make a thicker mixture. I've only used it once and won't need to use it again for a few weeks, so won't find that out right away, but I'm considering getting another one to use in the kitchen--though probably more for things like sauces and dressings than for foaming milk. I might experiment with making a low fat milk topping for desserts... I'll let you know how that works out.
I tried speaking to customer support. They said they would send me a replacement frother, but it never came. Don’t waste your money here
