Amateur Tips:
1) Always make sure you add the harder items to grind first and then the easier ones.
2) Always add water first, switch on the grinder and then keep adding the items in small batches till you think the grinder will be able to grind the load.
I've also used the Atta kneader attachment. It actually makes the process much easier. For someone like my mom who is not so strong, it does the job of kneading the dough pretty easy..just make sure you put in sufficient oil. Without oil, it comes out ok but there is more residue in the edges which needs to be cleaned.
Our bet; to replace versus refund, worked on both counts - Amazon took care of shipping us a replacement pronto and the new product that showed up works as expected!
The new one arrived before the UPS guy came to pick up the old one. They did downgrade to USPS for the second shipment - it was an awkward moment when the poor USPS mailwoman lugged the heavy package (poorly packed and damaged box) to the door and asked if we had stones in there - we didn't have the heart to tell her that indeed there were stones in it :-)
Barring the damaged outer box, everything else was in good shape and the product was put to good use right away, grinding rice and pulses. We ran it for two batches lasting 45 minutes each. The batter was ground fine, well done and we simply refrigerated the drum with its contents! The dosas and vadas turned out great made and we are happy so far with our investment.
So, in summary, Elgi does have a good product here, perhaps they need to tweak their QC process some! More importantly, Amazon backed the customer like they always do and ensured the return, shipping and replacement were pain free and efficient, which helped make the glitch first time around a distant memory
The first time: Damaged goods
Ordered the Ultra Dura+ after reading all the reviews and hearing good things about it from family and friends. Skeptical about ordering from local retailers selling an item manufactured in India, hence ordered from Amazon for added security. Glad we did, as the package arrived 2 hours ago, opened it as my wife was ready with rice and pulses soaked and ready to go, found loose screws from the swing arm rolling around the box, penny sized ding in the steel drum, plastic around the swing arm fulcrum looked worn, white plastic shoes holding the rotating stones had black residue like they had been extensively used, the stone bottom had a scratch - QC sticker right next to the ding. Ridiculous thing being that the packing was pretty decent - the thermacol holders inside the main box were broken which is about the only negative thing about the packing - the main box was inside a box which was inside the amazon shipping box - seemed to have adequate protection, so it had to be damaged at the point of assembly. Either way, quite ridiculous for a $250 item to have such damage out of the box, severely damages reputation. We have decided to ask for a replacement instead of a refund as the product from what we have heard/read is good and this could be one-off situation. We have left calls for Gandhi appliances in Illinois (sticker on warranty card), Innoconcept in Georgia (USA service center) and at Elgi (manufacturers) in India - will provide further reviews based on level of customer service and quality of replacement product.

This brand, if I am not wrong, were the first to make a table top wet grinder. Back in India, my parents bought our first Ultra table top wet grinder in the year 1993-94. It's still working with zero maintenance to date.
